Agreed on Biggs. Every minute with him is painful.

Love the rest though.
Laura Prepon is pretty fucking terrible in this as well but she's been pretty terrible in absolutely every role that I have seen her in. Aside from Biggs and Prepon somehow grabbing a charity check this show has been really good so far. Overall I'm impressed with what Netflix has done with their original series.

Watched 3 episodes, can't wait to finish the rest.

As for Jenji Kohan scaring anyone off, keep in mind he made two outstanding seasons of Weeds before it started going to shit. So I'm comfortable watching this for at least that long.

/////SPOILERS/////

I've watched it on Netflix US (thanks Mediahint), it was overall kind of good, some characters were interesting and it wasn't much about "Desperative Wives in jail". The Healy character was well written, Pornstache (Nick Sobotka in The Wire) too. Hell, even Jason Biggs was okay-ish. Some plots were dull (DREAMER / CO love & baby, most of the black people drama) and some twists were forced (Jesus people), but I'll definitely wait for s2.

On the other hand, Jenji Kohan also made Weeds, which I think is "Breaking Bad for children" therefore I'm biased. There is also some inconsistencies, as why women who commited murder / organized crime related felonies are dwelling in a minimum security federal facility, or why some key assignements aren't supervised by the administration (starvation punishment). I'm being picky there, but we already have our share of realistic prison drama (Oz), so when "based on a true story" pops up, heavy frowns are expected.

this show is great. nowhere does it make excuses for these people's crimes. it does a great job of humanizing people who made some very poor choices.

and that woman wasn't convicted of murder. she's in prison for harboring illegal immigrants i believe.

I despise long intro sequences. This shit clocks in over a minute. W.T.F? I mean, it's all on demand so I can zip past, but gah! The best part about the show Heroes was that you could blink and miss the intro. At least the Weeds opener was funny. This one is full on "DRAMA! REALNESS!!". w/e

The show itself is pretty great. I'm only 3 episodes in, but I like it.

We have a rule at our place that if you are marathon watching a show on netflix you have to fast forward through the shitty intros.

Every show needs an intro like Lost. Just show me the name of the program and get right back to the story.

Yeah, Netflix should do their big, flashy intro for the first episode and then skip or shorten that shit after that. One of the good things about the last seasons of Weeds is they were doing crazy shit with the intro. But if they're just going to do closeups of prisoner's mouths... I could do with less of that.

I like intros that actually inform you of the show or help you out. Game of Thrones is the obvious example of one that helps out viewers, but Veep is also one that gives the entire premise of the show for anyone new to it.

there's certain intros that are allowed to be long because they give you a great sense of the show. Dexter is the best example. that intro is just so brutal and visceral and all it is is him getting ready for work. then there's game of thrones is another one that is just simply enjoyable to watch EVERY TIME.

i didn't watch hemlock grove but i really feel like netflix needs to hire new people to make their show intros. House of Cards was just a cityscape. sure, okay, i get it... but i don't need 2 and a half minutes of cityscape to go OH! THIS SHOW IS ABOUT WASHINGTON DC! same with this show. i love me some regina spektor but both my wife and i said to each other after we saw the intro for the first time "i don't like this intro." that type of intro would be MUCH better suited for a show like OZ where it's a much more uncomfortable view of prison. this show is a highschool drama taking place in a prison. not that that's a bad thing, i thoroughly enjoy it way more than i thought i would... but good lord... nobody needs 2 minutes of ugly mouths.

Watched the whole season this weekend while setting up PC's at work, based on this thread. Really liked it. Definitely skewed to a female audience, and really heavy handed with the "They all just made poor choices, have sympathy!" thing, but as far as entertainment value goes, pretty top notch. I can't think of a single character I hate (Jason Biggs is probably the closest, but mainly due to his acting, not the character), which is super rare for me, and the shows managed to be both funny, and occasionally really uncomfortable where it's intended. Agree with pretty much everything thats been said in the thread.

Looking forward to season 2. Hopefully it comes out the same time next year so I can once again get paid to sit in a room all day watching an enjoyable show while doing boring work!

I really wanted someone to shiv the Russian chick. Didn't care for her at all even with them trying to show her "Ah bloo bloo, big tittied trophy wives didn't like me."

His character is pretty much an older version of his character in American Pie, yes. He even tries something else ridiculous with his jimmy at someone's suggestion later on in this show

Reminded me...sometime in episode 5-7, Piper says something to Red about Spock. I know it's not a direct reference, but I liked it. And I never even watched Star Trek (my mom was a huge Trekkie though, so I've "seen" it).

It wasn't Piper, it was Nicky. And it was a pretty direct reference.

is it me or does anyone view the girl as just a vassel into the life of that prison. The girl is so boring (the acting is fine, main character just is blah), jason biggs is just as boring, really could just fast forward through every biggs scene, it's not like you need to know about his parents, or her parents or him being bros with her brother. honestly they could write out the main girl and jason biggs and it'd still be a good show, we don't her,... as a pov character, maybe it's cuz most of us are men and just can't think of a creature like piper being real.

I finished episode 10 last night.
Red talks about having to kill the guard for covering up the girl's OD by making it a suicide.

I enjoy this show, but it appears to have just gotten more serious.
