Show was good - not excellent. I can't believe some people enjoyed this more than House of Cards. It doesn't feel like enough happens throughout many of the episodes. Which I guess is part of the point with it being prison and all. The show just didn't stay with any sort of consistency in what it wanted to be over the season. It doesn't do that great of a job of straddling the drama/comedy line.

Looks like people who didn't like her acting havegotten their wish:

Laura Prepon will return for a handful of episodes in the Netflix series' second season, but she won't be a series regular after opting not to sign a contract for the full season, BuzzFeed reports. Her character, Alex, will stick around long enough to wrap up her story.
It's unfortunate that they'll have to rush through her story faster than they planned, but there are enough intriguing characters on the show where I don't think she'll leave much of a hole. I just wonder how they're going to write her out as it really wouldn't make sense for her to get out of prison before Piper.

Just finished it tonight

Its alright for me. Not close to House of Cards by an stretch. Main drawback is just lots of bad acting, and not a lot of enjoyable characters. Piper is a total asshead, biggs is a whiny bitch, and prepon bored me to tears.

I liked it a lot. Sad that Preppon is leaving.

2nd season needs to xfer prepon far away forever, put piper in solitary forever, and focus on the rest of the girls in the prison, except for the spanish girls, they're boring. oh and make sure jason biggs dies or whatever, get rid of that boring outside of prison story. hell focus on that fat white guy with the chezck wife, that could be a great storyline!

Just finished this. Very decent series. I give it a 7.5.

Netflix is building a nice little library of original content between this and HoC. I love that they release the entire series at once.

To me this and HoC are two totally different shows, for two different moods. People who don't like "Littlefinger" type characters wouldn't like HoC and people who can't deal with a bit of lesbianism wouldn't be able to deal with Orange.

I like them both. Spacey carries HoC though. This show has an array of characters aside from the weaknesses like Biggs.

The only real parallel here is that they're both from Netflix but I don't mind the comparison. They're both solid shows.

On acting alone I think everything about HoC trumps and it seems like you're saying the opposite outside of Spacey? Or are you just commenting on the format of each show?

I dont know. I thought this show was good but kind of quirky. I thought season 1 of HoC was spectacular. I wouldn't give OitNB the same level of praise despite really enjoying it.

If i have one complaint though, I think Nicky Sobotka went a little overboard with the Pornstache character. I really enjoy him as an actor but would have enjoyed that character played a little less absurd. However, its not like he's the only over the top character so whatever.

I tune in for Spacey. Show can't thrive without him. Honestly can't think of many other actors Id want to see give his little 4th wall speeches.

Orange is quirky but I'm not tuning in for the lead or any one cast member. They could honestly have probably cast some different people. It's the atmosphere, writing, and though it has some rough patches its an ensemble cast of characters.

To me those types of differences (tone aside) are why they aren't comparable outside of being Netflix shows.

HoC older reporter chick is on Newsroom playing Romnneys campaign spokeswoman. Almost exact same character.

HoC is so much better than OitNB and I have no idea how anyone can defend that latter. OitNB is good, but not even a fraction of HoC. The acting, story, drama. All of it is better. The only thing OitNB might have over HoC are the relationships between the characters in the show. All the characters in OitNB depend on each other to make it through their hardship.

Not sure what page this thread was on. I gave up when I reached 11 and googled the thread. I just wanted to insert this gem before I forgot about it.

That should indeed be the title of the show!

I like the show and it's good. It's not House of Cards good though. It's hard to pinpoint it exactly, but Orange leaves me with a general feeling of trying to hard to be... something... without quite getting there.

But that's ok, and not the huge negative that it would be for other shows. Pretty much every character in the show is despicable for some reason or another (except for the redneck brother in law with pretense of being a modern day Thoreau. That dude is straight up motherfucking awesome), so it comes by "trying too hard" honestly at least.

But still, if you paint a picture of a turd and you do it masterfully, while you may deserve some recognition for that you still just have a picture of a turd.

It's easy to watch, and it doesn't punish the audience like some shows, like Sons of Anarchy or Walking Dead.

I think that what we are supposed to be gathering from these backstories and shit is not that they are despicable people, but rather they have done a despicable thing (or two). Other than that, they are mostly just normal people. Relatively, anyway. Definitely not enough gangbangers and bad bitches in this prison, but I guess this is the more minimum security portion of the prison so it makes sense.

Just saw that penny arcade today, and that was my reaction too when I finally learned about it a month or 2 ago. TBH, that should at least be the name of the thread. "Orange is the new black - It has Donna from That 70's show topless". If you'd done that last season, I would have tried to watch sooner.

I hate Piper, Donna, and Jewy McEdge fucker the most of any characters in the show. They're easily the worst people out of the entire cast. And I'm pretty sure that's intentional and it's part of what made the show grind me down as I watched it. It's really really hard to care about the main storyline at all -- the interesting parts are the prisoner backstories. But you're right, the prisoners have only done despicable things -- it's the authority figures that are actually despicable people. Sadly, pornstache is 100% believable as an unexaggerated character to me.

Easily the hardest part of the show to credit was that anyone would intentionally fuck the fat mexican girl without being drunk as hell.

Edit: So much of it is just forced. It's also hard to believe that Jewy McEdge and Piper would be so... infantile. The depiction of that main story really is just infantile. But hell, they're both coddled yuppie shits so maybe it's somewhat accurate. But all that said, I'd still recommend it to a friend that was looking for something decent to watch. It is decent.

I'm pretty sure it's infantile on purpose which is exactly why it's so insufferable to watch. I believe the writers want you to hate those two characters, or at least kind of root against them for the time being. Then they will have some big moment based on watching the other characters they believed were terrible people doing good things they themselves feel incapable of doing and they will "change" for the better. Pretty formulaic and uninspired but the show is still worth watching for the side characters.

I really hate Piper and Biggs' character (can't even remember his name) though. I'm with you.
