I agree. However; if a game with all those same mechanics released today, it'd fail miserably. Who the fuck would play that shit? Die-hard basement dwellers who want to Uncle Rico their glory days of classic EQ... but the whole system fails if none of the casuals give a shit. I sure as hell do not have the time or inclination to be tied to a game against my will because I rolled snakeeyes and have a corpse rotting in a dungeon somewhere. The only people I know who can do that are my self-employed friends that, coincidentally, play R99 and lament how Blizzard ruined games and nothing will ever be as good as Everquest.

I suppose if I worked from home and had near-limitless time to poopsock an MMO, as well as nothing else significant going on in my life, I'd feel differently about how much bullshit I will tolerate from a video game.
orly?

farming, corpse runs, grinding, non-consensual pvp, zero lore, zero story. makes money.

now, does that mean that anybody wants to camp Drelzna in Najena for 18 hours for a shot at a jboot roll? Fuck no. That isn't what was "hard" about EQ. But the 14 year olds MMO developers market to aren't the complete pussies everyone assumes they are.

Another one who brings up Dark Souls. How many times does it have to be stated, stop comparing game mechanics of a single player game to an MMORPG. The difference between playing a game like Dark Souls and playing an MMORPG like Dark Souls is you are in control of the single player game. You decide when to stop playing that game. And most importantly, those things you listed (CR's for example) is only dependent on you, not other people playing. It is a whole different ballgame when you are subjected to 'hardcore elements' of a game based on the actions of someone other than you.

Yes, by and large, they are. They are complete pussies that want everything handed to them on a silver platter, a-la-Diablo. Instant gratification, over and over and over, like Greater Rift runs that drop shit like loot pi?atas with almost no work required. They'll gladly camp GRs over and over for hours to get a specific item, yes, but doing something repetitive yet worthwhile != doing something challenging yet worthwhile.

The main problem here is that we see ourselves differently than we really were back in the day. Most of us weren't all hardcore and whatever because we wanted to be challenged. We were the way we were as a result of the challenges that were presented to us, and they got watered down over the years as more and more people became addicted to MMOs. The general population started bitching because "amagads this is taking too much time, I have 5 kids to feed" and shit got adjusted to compensate. Now we have 15 minute Greater Rift runs that drop loads of loot, so that people can pick it up and put it down super fast, and those of us that remember 8 hour VT clears are never going to feel that way about an MMO again, because that's not what Most People want now.

Edit: Yes, Diablo is not an MMO, Vandyn, but the point is valid, as this method of game design has defined MMOs for years.

This board is full of 30 somethings who have long since blown their load on tedious and time consuming MMO's. The people who want to play EQ-like things are a niche crowd, even on this forum, which is somewhat niche in and of itself. Like I said from the very beginning of this disaster; I don't want to play a game like this, but I'm all for them making more games like this. The problem is that most people don't want to play games like EQ(and what people hoped this thing would be) and those who do often seem completely ignorant to that fact.

I think there is a niche market you can appeal to with a game like this, but it will not likely ever go beyond that. The problem is making a niche game on a budget that will allow you to be "successful" even if you only get a few thousand players.

In the MMO world that seems impossible. Or at the very least, a scrappy bunch of dudes aren't going to get it done on Kickstarter money. Even leaving Pantheon out of the discussion, we continually see successful Kickstarters either scrape by or bust altogetherafterbringing in way more money than their initial goal. These are mostly very, very simply games by comparison.

I don't have faith that an old school MMO can exist without a publisher backing it. It's going to take a company with guts to say here's your budget, which is going to be small compared to the going MMO rate, but still far more than a small indie team can afford. Sadly, I don't see that happening. It's nice that H1Z1 is happening, it's sort of has the right mentality. But it comes after other comparable games saw massive success with the apocalypse, zombie-infested scenario.

Real talk, who's ever going to take the risk? Your HOSS posts about this idea had me hopeful that something might actually happen, but I'm going to go ahead and assume that concept is still just a dream at this point.

I'm with you- I'm a 30-something who no longer has the time it takes to play an EQ-like mmo, but I'm all for such games being made.

That said, I'm going to respectfully disagree with your assertion. I'm not sure what you mean by "most people" don't want to play games like EQ, but "most people" didn't play EQ in the first place. EQ itself had a niche market from jump street. Also, you mention that people who want to play EQ-like games are ignorant of the fact that most people don't want to play EQ-like games. This may be true, but I'd say that just many people in our position (30-something EQ vets) are guilty for viewing the potential market for such a game through the lens of our own biased perspective.

Heres what I mean- I see people on these boards all the time saying "People just don't have time for a game like that today" and "No one would put up with those mechanics." What they are really saying is "My gamer friends and Idon't have time" and "My gamer friends and Iwouldn't put up with..." And it kind of makes sense. Why would the average gamer try and anticipate the potential appeal of a game outside their own peer group (and frankly how accurate do you think they would be if they tried)?

Honestly, there is a legitimate tendency for most of us to believe that since we have grown older and busier and a little less patient with stuff like that, then the whole world has too. I think it's more likelywehave changed far more than the actual gaming landscape has, and there are just as many high school and college kids and "basement-dwellers" who would happily find a home in an EQ-like game- like we did when we were in their position.

Ultimately it's all speculation. No one has been successful at making a game that managed to bring all the elements to the table that EQ brought and tie them together in as nice a package. Maybe no one ever will. I guess the one thing we can agree on is that we are all for someone trying.

At the end of the day

You can be some sort of dragon, or a big lizard, or whatever. And they have these things called guilds where, like, a bunch of other people form an alliance against another.. character.. or something.

Eh my chick will get on and afk me some bone chips from time to time on my paladin while I'm cooking dinner.

Ho be slangin chips
while playing p99 I fucked a cleric I grouped with in n.ro at the derv camps once. she paid to fly me out to her place, bitch was super weird and cripplingly introverted, looked like a bargain bin, scratch and dent Betty Page (kind of fat, Betty Pudge?) she lived with her mom and grandma in Colorado. She tried really hard to get me to cum inside of her, constantly telling me that "she couldn't have babies". I bailed on like day 3 when her mom asked if we were going to "become a couple" and she gave me some "spending money" to take her daughter so I roamed around the North West for a few weeks with said money before flying back home, had a sweet free vacation and some irl ogre pussy at the cost of having to delete my shadowknight when i got home and reroll. nbd.

I bet they still argue at thanksgivings about my mysterious disappearance.

mmo chicks, the few that are out there, are horrible.

Oh baby what a story.

My girl has no idea what she's doing, she just left clicks the skeleton and presses the auto attack button (bound to "T")

About all it takes though. I sincerely hope that afk bonechippin doesn't turn her into an ogre...
