Very limited upside.

About the only thing that he would be saving on is his money. Not socializing, not hitting on women, not getting drunk, etc.

The longer I have been waiting for Pan'Theon, the more I have a sinking feeling of "Do I really want to ever play another MMO again?"

I have a good life. I hold down a full time job and run a second business on the side. I have great friends, awesome social circle. I get out of the house 2-3 times a week to hit the gym or play in adult sports leagues. The weekends I hit the bars, watch games or UFC.

The moment I start playing a MMO, all of those things become secondary to advancement in the game. Do I even want that? I have already seen how this story plays out with EQ and WoW. I don't know if I want to be one of the Fallen.

I fall into this same boat, every once in a while Ill dabble in some MMO and starts out slow then about a month in, Ill spend my whole weekend not leaving the house and just grinding out some pixels and I have to walk away.

I always tell myself Ill just limit it to x amount of days a week and never seems to work out.

Ill still try to be one of the fallen if it ever makes it to release.

Everquest - Live Servers

Just in case you missed that post from a current EQ programmer/designer in the EQ Live Servers thread:

So, how big is VR's team of artists, designers, and programmers now?

0 artists (Unity free store), 40 designers (mostly San Diego people who got laid off from big companies, working for free, avoiding a gap in their resume because they can't get a job at a real company), 0 programmers.

If there is an MMO good enough to WoW you or EQ you again, you'll be back. Of course this assumes that experience returns.

Sometimes we want to play old game mechanics and there's nothing wrong with that. I remember when RTS became a big thing in the 90s I was worried Civilization might go that route and turn based strategy would die. Fortunately, it wasn't the case. Sadly though EQ's combat mechanics just died and a lot of people have that itch they want to scratch. We still go back to EQ and have a blast breaking a room, camping a boss or two traveling from dungeon to dungeon to level up and gear up. I loved how combat worked in EQ, I loved every single detail about everything. The "tick" system, going out of mana, pulling, CCing, monster's HP was huge and they hit like trucks. There are so many details in the game mechanics that just disappeared from the market.

Just like I've spend thousands of hours playing HEX (because it was almost like MTG) I know I will be spending thousands of hours playing Pantheon.

Same deal. For the last two years I went to the gym 3 times a week, then I went back to EQ and subsequently WoW BFA. Went to the gym twice in those 4 months, put on 10lbs of fat and felt like shit. Never interfered with my work but my dating life went completely to zero.

Never been hooked on booze or drugs but I'm starting to see how people have their life slide into a rut, and how the actual booze/drugs are only half the problem.

I totally get having games effect other aspects of your life. That being said a little discipline goes a long way. I've been derailed by games a number of times myself. Can't really blame that on the game though, it's on us.

Blaming an MMO for you turning into a temporary turd is like blaming Mcdonalds for being fat, or blaming Nascar for being an idiot.

True, we do it to ourselves. It's more complicated than just discipline though, if it was merely a matter of "just do the right thing" everyone would exercise regularly, never smoke and no one would be fat.

Brain chemistry plays a huge role in driving our behaviour. The memory of enjoying the game gives you a dopamine shot and that is what makes you log in in the first place. Over time, dopamine desensitization can kick in, which makes you less motivated to seek out normally pleasurable activities. If you ever found yourself skipping meals or your favorite TV show while playing EQ, this is why. You can indeed avoid this by moderating how much you play, but that can spiral upwards over time.

Not going to derail this thread further (even by this thread's standards) but the page below describes how this happens. Alternatively, watch the video if you have some time. It's about how excessive porn use can affect the brain's dopamine system leading to reduced motivation and willpower. Even if you don't watch porn, the process is the same for other activities like gaming, smoking, excessive social media usage or even just dicking around on the internet all day.

But then on the other hand what if you are in your 40's or 50's, in a settled relationship? MMOs are just so hassle free and uncomplicated. A simple hobby for a simple life. Now teenagers and people in their 20's spending most their time in a MMO is a whole other story.

c'mon, bro, this thread has no standards

The recent time debate...for me, it's about Time. It's nice when people make the "I only ever had to log in on Tuesdays" argument, but how many people do you know that only played an MMO one day a week?

The days of being a poopsocker and trying to keep up with the Joneses is over for me. I just DGAF. Someone has prettier pixels than I do? I'm ok with that.

We all remember when the biggest thing people looked for was your availability, right? The last thing I want, is to have to structure my life around being near a computer. Am I available 7 days a week? Not really. Will I log on to see if there's some shenanigans going on? Sure.

I could have sworn that there was some sort of Dev statement for Pantheon, that essentially said that they were looking at creating content that could be consumed in 1-2 hour segments. Which I'd be a fan of, as sometimes I just want to get home, cook something, log on for an hour or two, and then log out. I just don't want to be part of regularly scheduled guild events where shit always goes long and the West Coasters bitch nonstop because you're tired and want to log out 'early'. And I'm just like "no, motherfuckers, it's midnight your time, it's 2am here, and I have to get up for work in 4 hours, go fuck yourselves." Especially when you log in after work and had to wait a couple hours on their asses to get home from work.

I ruined school and relationships at one point, playing 80hrs a week. I still play a lot of games, but there's no way I will allow that to happen again.
