Actually all this talk did get me to sort of fire WotR back up again to do the Lord of Nothing DLC. Dunno if I'm gonna jump into a new full campaign once I'm done with this but man it's hard to play this pauper level shit when you're used to the methed up power levels of standard WotR.

Look at you! You can't even enjoy the superior game unless it's the juiced late game part!
nah the whole point of Through the Ashes/Lord of Nothing is that it's a much lower powered mini-campaign with non-mythic characters and the events of the main campaign are just a backdrop. Through the Ashes is a couple lowbie adventurers trying to help a group of refugees escape the events of the beginning of the main campaign and Lord of Nothing picks up where Through the Ashes ended.

I'm enjoying it just fine, I just really wasn't exaggerating when I described this as pauper level. The campaign is fairly stingy with loot, the secondary advancement system that replaced mythic progression is mostly just flavor rather than a power increase, and the campaign doesn't take it easy on you. It's a fun and challenging kind of difficult rather than just jacking all the enemy stats up through the roof.

through the ashes is interesting, as it also plays a lot like a puzzle. there's basically a correct and a wrong way to do everything. its an extended shield maze.
lord of nothing is more of a generalized playthrough.

I loaded this game back up after a few years not playing. My party was in the Grey Garrison at lvl 5. Finished the 1st and 2nd levels, about to fight the nasty minotaur on level 3. Should I be running around with all my mounts as pets? Seems silly but they do help out.

usually its better to be riding the mount. but, loose is also powerful.

Riding does a few things:
mainly, it uses the mounts movement to move. so, when you now, get into melee, can do a "Full attack action". if you move then attack, you only attack once. while stationary, lets you do that full attack action, using all your attacks.
at level 5, you probably only have 2 attacks. but, by level 20, and you have 5-6 attacks, its pretty huge. but even 2 attacks is 100% more then 1 attack.
many spells even require that full round.
second, teamwork feats work with mounts. so does flanking. woljif riding a mount, will just automatically have sneak attack due to flanking. yes, just having the pet loose can do this as well, but it works better when they move as one.
third, non-aoe attacks hit the mount first. so you can ignore defense on the rider mostly, and go full defense on the mount. this is a quirk of the game. its not really supposed to work like this.

pets in general are crazy. team work feats, extra bodies/blocking/tanking. their hit rates rarely keep pace with mythic levels, but still. can be a bit of extra damage as well.
pets and mounts can be used for athletic checks as well. how seelah's horse is climbing that rope. I don't know. but it works. this is not automatic. got to select the horse and use it on the check.

Is it possible to create a party mix that will allow me to point and go? That is, not micro-manage individual members. Fire and forget so to speak.

uh...I guess if you take minimal casters and play on normal or lower difficulty? What exactly do you mean by 'not micro-manage individual members'?

yes.

full paladin seelah is pretty point and go. only will want ot drop marks of justice from time to time.
a normal hellknight/armiger regil, on a triceratops is point and go.
ranger arushalae is pretty point and go.
monk archer van is pretty point and go.
greybor and spidercat can both be setup as throwing axe's easy, and both have little setup.

set up dearan, cam, nenio, ember, and sosiel as primary buffers, and use the buffbot mod, so its one press and go.

I don't know what any of that means but it sounds fun. I do have a little mastodon mount but he kinda sucks.

Basically, I'm playing with a controller. so managing individual members is kind of annoying. Unless I'm doing something wrong, or there is a better way (and don't say keyboard/mouse).

You know who else plays games with a controller? Chris, that's who! Are you a Chris?!?
Also, I shall now point and laugh at the people trying to play this with a controller.

Reminds me of the time I tried to play Dark Souls with mouse and keyboard through an emulator...

I built a mini-PC hooked up to a TV and I'm pretending is a game console.

no but seriously if you're absolutely determined to be gay then play in real time mode on normal or below and keep companion casters to a minimum. Nenio and Sosiel for caster utility/support when needed, Arue for traps because the AI is reasonably efficient with a ranged attacker, Seelah for tanking, Regill cross-classed to cavalier so he's always getting full attacks despite moving, and Lann or Wenduag as whichever ranged build of theirs tickles your pickle. Then replace one of those 6 roles with your MC depending on what you've built.

*edit*

Or Ulbrig in place of either Regill or Landuag.
