I had a Russian Blue for almost 20 years. Died three years ago. Longest time I've ever been without a pet. I had a Britnay Spaniel that lived 17 years. Sucked she died when I was out of town and she was at my parents place. She was hell on woodcock, so much so I changed her name to Pax from the woocock name (Scolopax Minor).

I'd like another pet but I'm a person that thinks a pet is more than an animal that sets around the house all day. My Russian Blue would sit outside for hours on end looking straight down at the ground. Took me a while to figure out. She was listening/looking for moles and shrews or whatever and would dig them up and leave them around.

It has been a few months. I figured I would update his progress. He is growing up nicely.

Poor Sansa broke a tooth today. I had taken her to the vet a couple times before because it’s been getting harder and harder to get her to eat and it seemed like it was some kind of pain causing it, but vets would always say it wasn’t so urgent yet. I had a dental scheduled for her last January, but that’s when my ex-husband quit his job and our divorce started and I couldn’t afford it anymore at the time. Now I feel like a piece of shit for not finding a way to get it done sooner vs. absolutely needing it now that it’s worse.

Two cats, both are ancient. They can't live together because the brother bothers the sister constantly which starts fights. Sister was living with me, brother was living with my mom. Everything was fine for a long while, until the brother got needy and annoying to the point that my mom suggested either I take him or we put him down. So I took him and we traded cats. Everything was fine for a short while, until the male started randomly peeing on things in my place. After he stunk up the place (several spots where he peed repeatedly) he eventually had to go, so we traded cats again. I spent a while cleaning up as best I could and getting rid of any pee smell from the spots he peed on. Switched out the litter box. Now the sister is here and twice in two days she peed outside the litter box, right in front of it. She's never done this before. Two mornings in a row I woke up to a big puddle right in front of the litter box that I then had to paper towel away and spray alcohol on. I also sprayed that apple-spray (that deters cats) onto the areas where the brother used to pee, to ward her off of peeing "over" those. She hasn't done anything like that, just peeing in front of the litter box. WTF is this about and how do I get her to stop? Really not keen on putting these cats down over their peeing habits, especially the sister who is incredibly well-behaved otherwise.

I'd say take her to the vet and explain. When you've traded cats, did you trade them with their litter boxes as well?

Nope, the litter box here being used by the lady is the one she had for a long time before. It was just a temporary basis that we switched the cats around, a few weeks.

She could just be getting used to her old box again, or is nervous to use it if the boy used that box while he was there. Either way, vet is the way to go because it also could be health related.

I think she's nervously overshooting the side of the box, having observed it. Not sure why the boy cat feels the need to just go wherever. Both of them are really old and should probably be put down at this point. I wanted my future kids, or at least my future wife, to meet them while they're still around, since I've had them for nearly half my life. They're both chugging along, but neither has any real energy.

I really dislike the idea of putting an animal down because they inconvenience you. If you've had a cat or dog long enough, you'll know when the time comes. Have you ever had to put an animal down before? You're bringing it up so I feel compelled to say something.

You'll know when its time if you love them. They'll stop wanting to do things, it's hard to put exactly into words, but you'll be able to see the pain in their eyes. If an animal stops drinking water especially and its old and frail, don't let it struggle on. Dying of thirst is an awful way to go.
