I'm pretty damn good at curve balls now but throwing at shit like Golbat that flies and is really far away can still be tough. Curve balls on them are a mofo.
Early on if I needed to throw long range at a zubat or some shit I'd stand facing dead on the pokemon, tilt the screen down flat, touch the ball and slide my finger fast as I could from the bottom of the screen to the top. Generally that hit them.
Later I figured out how to lob the balls just sliding my finger from bottom to top of the screen quickly and straight at the pokemon. It's more or less that simple.
Throwing curves at stuff far away... I throw my curves out to the right and they curve back left. I spin the ball clockwise til it's going real fast, I put the pokemon toward the left side so I can use more of the right side of the screen throwing the ball further out to the right then letting it come back left at the pokemon. For far away mobs vs up close stuff it's just how far UP the screen I release the ball. For pidgeys up close I release the ball nearer the bottom of the screen. For Golbat I'll release it up real high.
If you can't hit something with a curve ball, go back to swiping straight up.
When I find a pokemon I really want but know I'm going to struggle with, I try to use a raspberry every throw and use the highest balls I can plus I try to time the throw right after the pokemon evades or attacks. I threw 37 ultra balls at a Blastoise the other day though so there's no gaurantees...
