Not sure why anyone would even care about anything other than domestic opening weekend, but Spider man is still in the lead for that.

It's around 700 million right now...
Did you read the opening post? Nothing about "opening weekend".

Also I consider box office total much better then opening weekend, since any movie can open with a splurge before word of mouth and reviews completely ruin it.

It's assumed the OP isn't retarded ,and meant opening domestic weekend, because who else gives a fuck about anything else. Ive yet to see anyone ever say domestic total gross. It's either Domestic opening, or total gross...

It's a dumb criteria to run a contest on since most movies have a 3 month run. So we're going to wait till the end of the year for the contest to end instead of the end of the summer?
FYI most opening box office hits don't splurge... You can see that easlly by looking at the total gross charts..

If it does well opening weekend, which determines the success of a film, it does well for its whole life well into home sales....
On the flipside if you fail opening weekend, you are done..

So Opening>ALL

It's the whole fucking reason studios are releasing overseas early to inflate their numbers going into Domestic opening weekend.

Yeah Godzilla is winning then.

Transformers made $97,852,865 with it's last sequel so it's very possible.

Xmen made $90,700,000

Sleepers do happen but they seem to be rare. And none of the movies on that list besides for maybe Dragon have even the slightest chance of being a sleeper.

At the end of the season a little chart comparing opening box office and lewt-to-date would be interesting. Both metrics are equally valid, but for our timeframe opening is probably the implied one.

Not a Sleeper, but Godzilla doing that well is impressive.
Just shows that power of a well known actor boosts your films a shit ton.

Usually monster movies don't perform well, even The Hulk had problems. So to get 97 million on opening is quite an accomplishment.

in the last 10 years of summer movies, only twice has the best opening weekend not been the top earner. Iron Man 2 in 2010 and The Matrix Reloaded in 2003

I thought we were asked to vote on Domestic Box Office, not Domestic Box Office First Week.

I think Edge of Tomorrow just might be the sleeper you're looking for.

22 Jump Street performed a bit higher than expected with HTTYD2 a little under but neither is going to win top of the summer. Given the Sci-fi downer that EoT was I can't see GotG breaking $70, so that leaves Transformers 4 and possibly the Apes.

Gardians is going to top out this summer it's the last marvel movie before Avengers 2 and there's a lot of information needed to be filled in this movie. I expect great things

I don't think the majority of the public gives two shits about the overarching story between the movies. They just like them as self contained movies.

I still think GotG will do well on the marvel name, good advertising, and it just being a fun movie.

I'm still not remotely convinced GoTG will do well at all, theres no mainstream characters to hype it up

So far its looking like this in top 4 since, these movies really been out long enough that they wont make much more domestically (worldwide in parenthesis)

XMEN Days of Future Past: 205,940,000 (664,740,000)
Amazing Spider Man 2: 198,392,000 (700,320,000)
Godzilla: 191,301,000 (439,601,000) - Note this movie has NOT been released in China OR Japan yet, expect its Worldwide to increase dramatically
Maleficent: 163,525,000 (436,425,000)

Movie Saved By Foreign Box Office:

Edge of Tomorrow: 56,649,000 (237,649,000) - Thats fucking ridiculous AND it was a good movie

22 Jump Street will probably make far less this week, and How to Train Your Dragon 2 will probably end up moving in-front of it due to that, kids movies tend to have a more gradual drop-off

Thanks to Slow Summer, 2014 Box Office Now Trails 2013 - Box Office Mojo
Through the end of April, 2014 domestic box office was up nine percent over 2013. Thanks to a slow Summer season, though, that lead has already completely evaporated.

Unfortunately, Summer 2014 has been slower than expected. Through Monday, the Summer box office is at $1.79 billion, which is down 13 percent from last Summer's $2.07 billion haul.
There was some discussion about it in the GotG thread but basically the box office needs a decent July and August not to have a single bust.
