The Assistant

If someone told me that one of the torments of Hell was a stint as Harvey Weinstein's personal secretary I might be willing to believe them. It's slow and not much happens but it works.

Adding a couple (thanks IFC films free trial):

Kill List (2011) (English hit man with a twist)

A Dark Song (2017) (Ceremonial Magic, Alester Crowly style)

The Burrowers (2008) (19th century western horror)

All excellent (pretty sure A Dark Song was mentioned before, REALLY like this movie, this was like my 3rd watch).

Really trying to get through Kill List but I’m hating every.single.thing that Ben Wheatley is doing from a direction stand point. Now on the 3rd (?) dinner scene with what I can only assume are microphones in people’s mouths amplifying the chewing, slurping, fork on teeth clink, zoomed in close up of everyone’s face as they smack away. If the blonde wife wasn’t so fucking I woulda been out a long time ago.

haha, stick with it. Things get real and you will thank me. I don't bother mentioning movies unless I really enjoyed them.

Hah yeah you weren’t kidding. Other than the first 30 minutes or so it wasn’t bad. And the last 20 really kick it up a notch.

Recently watched The Death of Stalin and really enjoyed it. It felt like almost every line was a joke with some very dark humor. The pacing was slow but fast at the same time really never seen another movie like it. When I saw it was done by some of the same people that did Veep the pacing and writing made more sense.

Last Days of American Crime on Netflix. Don't watch. It's shit, I can't even think of one memorable scene in the entire movie.

I forgot to ad another movie recommendation, and the reason I picked up that 7 day free IFC movie sub:

The Shrine (2010)

Another one that starts slow but has big payoff towards the end. You may just do some air fist pumps last 20 mins even...

Also watched "Dead End" (2003) last night, was a thriller/black comedy and a little above average.

Blackout (2019) aka Avanpost

interesting russian post apocalyptic movie, the actors are all russian but the version I saw was redubbed into english with decent VA. 90s style military porn/action movie, plot is really simple all life on Earth seems to have vanished except for a small unaffected circle around Moscow. Story follows military groups trying to figure out what happened etc. Really fun to watch and pretty straight forward, excellent visuals considering the budget must have been almost nothing. Highly recommend for any scifi/post apoc fans. Has a bit of a cyber punk vibe to it.

Summer of 84.

Was decent. my thoughts echo some of the stuff said in the main thread on it. the dialogue doesnt quite match the time period. its not the worst offender for that, but its noticeable if you were an 80's kid.
the overview is a bit of classic stand by me, goonies adventure of the 80's and rear window. the movie has a bit of a tonal shift, as it spends most of it as that adventure, then as it "ends" you notice there is still 20min of run time. Then it gets dark.

Kursk 7.5/10

Movie about the sub disaster. Very similar feel to Chernobyl and tone in many ways. Nothing amazing but covers it well.

Fucking idiots who thought Hold the dark was any good. Completely non sensical. I like pretty good gotcha plot twists or things that make you think.

This was just random and incoherent. I guess you could say it tried to put too many little random themes together, but it just falls flat. Though already by the M60 scene I was fed up, that alone would have been better if there was only like 5 people and he cut down a few leaving 2 would have been better than this reverse drawn out Rambo scene.

I watched Dope in Netflix today. It was just okay until suddenly out of nowhere it turns into a PSA commercial for five minutes of "wyte people amirite". Then goes back to the movie like it never happened

It went from meh to wtf meh.

The Shrine wasn’t bad. Now if you’d told me it had Aaron Ashmore it would have been an instant watch! Was also an easy watch at like 1hr 15min or so.
