Leaving for SD in a few weeks and was wondering if anyone can point out a few local eateries/pubs in the area that really kick ass. Looking for something with a nice patio and if possible a nice view of the sunsets, I've never seen the ocean so anything close to that would be awesome as well.

My only real requirement for a pub is that they have cider on tap or in a bottle, not a big fan of liquor or beer. Keep in mind it doesn't really have to be a pub just something laid back where I can talk with my friends.

For eateries, you can't really go wrong with just about anywhere in Gas Lamp (ditto bars). They've all got patios, although you won't see the sunset for shit. You will see all kinds of hos though.

I don't know how the food is there, but the OB Pier cafe is in a pretty awesome place to eat and see a sunset. Not sure if you can see the sunset very well from it (since it's harbor bound), but Bali Hai in Point Loma is pretty good, and it's on the water.

Toronado in north park. Around 50 beers on tap, a few hundred bottles (I'm sure there's cider). Good eats, nice scene.

Phil's is a pretty decent BBQ joint, very reasonably priced. You can get a full slab of ribs for about 5 bucks more than what your pay at a grocery store for an uncooked slab. That said, the OP is from Texas and would probably be disappointed with Phil's.

Slater's looks fucking awesome thought, thanks for the tip.

Slater's is pretty damn good, but it's essentially a chain restaurant. It's got an excellent selection of beers. But it's also in a shopping center.

I'm not a big fan of Texas BBQ, I don't really like Texas style sauce, I much prefer Georgia style or tangy. I'll give it a shot.

I've been to slaters a couple times. Once had their namesake/default 50/50 burger, and the other time their monthly special was 1/2 chorizo, 1/2 beef patty with jalepe?os, cheddar, and i don't remember what else. Besides being a little on the salty side, it was pretty kick ass.

How is traffic in that area? Would it be wise to rent a scooter and roll around if said scooter rental places exist?

You'll need a car if you want to get around the city at all. San Diego is spread out and the traffic is pretty shitty. I wouldn't recommend a scooter unless you're strictly going to use it in a single beach community. Otherwise you shouldn't use one as you will die.
