Orcas are crazy smart and one of the best examples of culture/learned behaviors in the animal kingdom outside humans. Various pods will invent unique behaviors and then pass that down to offspring and some of this offspring will pass it on to new pods when they leave it.

Like if you've ever seen videos of orcas beaching themselves just to catch a seal on the beach and then being able to get back into the water after, that was a learned behavior within a specific pod and not natural to all orcas.

People kind of forget that Sharks are basically just fish. Dolphins/Orcas/Whales are a bit more than that. They have actual thoughts and learned behaviors.

I can't remember where now, but I think I've heard a story of someone who was stranded in the ocean because their boat flipped over or something and a dolphin brought them a dead seal. Not really what they wanted at the time but it's the thought that counts.

On the one hand, that's great to see new technology providing more/better answers to things we've only theorized. On the other, that guy comes across as a massive douchenozzle and I immediately hate him. Don't get me wrong, we all know there are tons and tons of "trust the science" people in various fields that are even worse than this guy and should be strung up, but unless astrophysicists actually touched this guy in his no-no place, he's acting like a complete fucking tard about something that should be celebrated as a leap forward in understanding. Messaging is important, and this guy's message is that he's a fucking vindictive fag.

That’s how science works - if you discover new info and it stands up to scrutiny, then it supplants older knowledge

I agree the guy posting that tweet is an asshat, it’s a win not a loss to discover new info like that

Imagine being an astrophysicist that just spent the last 40 years working off of everything that stemmed from the discovery of the CMBR and the JWST comes along and oopsies your entire career. Thats a tough one. Great news for the young guys though, that now have something completely new and unexpected to work on and try to figure out.

agree completely but I see articles like this as the punchline to a long build up created by theoritical physicists and mathematics. People who read threads like this are constantly seeing shitty science articles overstating the confidence of theoretical models that state dumb bullshit, it's cathartic to see these leaps of mathematical faith take an L from improved data.
