it was quite incredible, actually had me amazed at how well they pulled it all off. they even threw in some neat easter eggs from the jeremy brett sherlock holmes series. is there going to be a new series this year?

There's supposed to be longer edit for theatrical release in the UK, hopefully they release it for the world too.

I liked how they tied it to the ending of S3, although the last third was a tad bit too trippy for me. Moriarty in the wedding dress was beautiful. Gatiss was enjoying the victorian era a bit too much I think. I wonder whose idea that was, same for the rule 63 in the morgue.

I wonder if it was single guy doing the cinematography , since some of the transitions and sets, for example when Lestrad is first presenting the case, are absolutely genius. Then you have the spinning screen when they go visit the estate ...

That was really my only complaint. I figured it was probably in his head but I think it would have been better to keep it all victorian until the very end where he snaps out of it. The back and forth the last little bit was a bit offputting.

There was one moment where while in a carriage, Victorian Watson calls Holmes a prick, but it was actually modern Watson clean shaven and with a modern shirt. It was blink and miss moment and the next time the camera panned back on him he was wearing his mustache and Victorian shirt

That kind of stuff didn't bug me so much as when they started to go back and forth and get all trippy at the end.

My only wish for S4 is for more standalone episodes, the overarching story is nice and all, but Sherlock is his best when he is being smart, not borderline schizophrenic and fighting with his own mind.

According to imdb the next two episodes come out next year. I hope that's wrong.

it sucks if true, but then again, i'm happy they are still doing these since freeman and cumberbatch became big stars. plus there are only 10 episodes and the show started in 2011, so its not like these things are regular events.

meh episode for me. I really, really enjoyed the first half with all the victorian stuff until it was rudely interrupted by the modern era. The first half of the case was fantastic, the resolution was idiotic and it felt like an insanely long road to get to "moriarty is really a group of people". Plus we didn't really see a resolution to either case, and the investment I felt in victorian sherlock just vanished.

If they had just kept it pure victorian and used that extra 30 minutes to go into some more backstory on the guys who got murdered and put in something other than a bunch of chicks in purple KKK outfits hang out while sherlock talks, I probably would have really liked the whole thing a lot more. Should have just ended with modern Holmes waking up and saying "I know who Moriarty is".

Not bad, I liked how they tied in the victorian era to the show, even before the reveals at the end. I had no idea this was going to be set in the past, only caught a quick glimpse of a commercial before and for some reason I didn't catch that they were in the past. I just thought they were dressing more classically now.

So, in the next season, it will be some group of mastermind criminals that are keeping the 'idea' of moriarity alive, I'm pretty sure. Or, an individual, whatever.

Maybe some Sherlock fans can shed some light on this, but just how smart is Mycroft? To be considered the genius next to his idiot brother, Sherlock, is quite unfathomable.

In the books he's smarter than Sherlock but is a thinker rather than a doer, so he spends his time behind a desk at his club "advising" the government. The sibling rivalry between the two of them seems more a creation of film and TV.

There is some mild rivalry of the two in the stories, Sherlock tries to impress Mycroft with his deduction, only to have Mycroft inform him of the other things that Sherlock missed. I think it irritates Sherlock.

in the book version of the abominable bride the group doing the bride shit is also not suffragettes, but actual KKK members - that's how the American secret society stuff gets tied in
12 of the best Doyle stories are online, including Bride (Five Orange Pips is the story) and you can read online/download anytime you want

There are also rumors Loki may join S4 as a third Holmes brother. S4 starts shooting in April but probably won't air until Jan 2017.

That's been a rumor for months but I think it's wishful thinking - although Hiddleston is a good friend of Cumberbatch and Sherlock's casting does include a bunch of friends and relatives, especially relatives.

"Tom would be wonderful in Sherlock I'm sure but he only does movies now. What can I say? I'll ask him if you like. Well it's an internet rumour so it must be true. We might as well just wait and see what happens."

I remember a quote from Sherlock when he's first introducing Watson (or maybe someone else) to his brother, where he says some of his cases his brother solves just by reading the newsclippings about it, whereas he has to go find evidence and interview people. That was how much smarter he felt his brother was then him, but he went a different path.

Also, in case anyone didn't know, the actor who plays his brother is also the head writer, Mark Gatiss.
