Releasing the DLC for the X-box first before releasing it to PC killed my desire to purchase them.

Not in any sort of outrage over favoring consoles, although that is a bit annoying, but more because that I had already played so much Skyrim at the point I just can't bring myself to play anymore.

I had stopped playing for quite awhile, then they announced the Dawnbringer DLC and I thought it looked interesting, so I whipped up a new game, tried out some mods and sort of prepped for it. Then waited....and waited...and waited, until I got bored with the game all over again. The fact they couldn't even be bothered to give a concrete PC release date choosing instead to give vague time frames was a put off as well.

I mean, I really enjoyed Skyrim, played the crap out of it. But the handling of the DLC was done poorly and I don't think I could put anymore time into the game even if I wanted to.

I knew I should of started saving some of the stuff posted in the Morenetz thread. Was just about to install the game thinking that I would look over the lists people were posting and remembered that it was gone.

Lets get the lists going again.

Adam12's updated list (5/5/14):

Recently reinstalled and have been dicking around with mods. Here's the best I've been able to come up with for both graphical enhancement and performance. I tried several ENB configs and hated them all. Most were either too saturated and lame or were more for screenshots over gameplay. Game looks great and runs smooth (50 - 60fps) on a gtx 570, i7 3.14, 16gb ram (I think only a max of 8 can be used for Skyrim), and a SSD. Here's my list of mods, tweaks and utilities:

Necessary Utilities:
Skyrim Nexus - mods and community- To manage your installations load order. I tend to DL manually and activate through NMM instead of using the "Install Using Manager" button.
BOSS- To create your load order and alert you to any dirty edits that need cleaning.
TES5Edit at Skyrim Nexus - mods and community- To clean your dirty edits.
Skyrim Script Extender (SKSE)- Script extender necessary for many mods.

Unofficial Patches:
Unofficial Skyrim Patch at Skyrim Nexus - mods and community- Skyrim
Unofficial Dawnguard Patch at Skyrim Nexus - mods and community- Dawnguard
Unofficial Hearthfire Patch at Skyrim Nexus - mods and community- Hearthfire
Unofficial Dragonborn Patch at Skyrim Nexus - mods and community- Dragonborn
Unofficial High Resolution Patch at Skyrim Nexus - mods and community- Hi Res

Texture/mesh/graphic Mods (I tried to list in install order NOT load order, but I may have transposed a few mods):
Ruins Clutter Improved at Skyrim Nexus - mods and community- Makes the random shit in the ruins look way better.
Skyrim Shadow Striping Fix at Skyrim Nexus - mods and community- Fixes SOME issues with shadows. Shadows are still shitty unless you use an ENB.
Climates Of Tamriel - Weather - Lighting - Audio at Skyrim Nexus - mods and community- Weather and lighting overhaul. Not as intensive of an overhaul as some of the popular lighting only mods. Easy on your system but does make a nice difference.
Skyrim HD - 2K Textures at Skyrim Nexus - mods and community- New HD models for a ton of things. I think the install order is: Landscape, dungeons, town, misc, Riften.
Detailed Rugs at Skyrim Nexus - mods and community- Rugs.
RealVision ENB at Skyrim Nexus - mods and community- I use this at the .ini setting of 125 (see install instructions and you'll know what I'm talking about). You get more grass than vanilla but your FPS actually increases.
RealVision ENB at Skyrim Nexus - mods and community- New grass floor textures.
TreesHD_Skyrim_Variation at Skyrim Nexus - mods and community- HD trees. I use the performance friendly option.
High Definition Ivy - 2K at Skyrim Nexus - mods and community- HD ivy.
Realistic Water Two at Skyrim Nexus - mods and community- The best water mod that I've found.
Bethesda Hi-Res DLC Optimized at Skyrim Nexus - mods and community- Use this, the Full 1024 option, and disable the HD packs from Bethesda. Shit looks and runs way better.
Enhanced Blood Textures at Skyrim Nexus - mods and community- Better blood.
Skill Interface Retexture at Skyrim Nexus - mods and community- Skill trees look way better.
Silly Level of Detail - Potions and Poisons -- SLOD PnP at Skyrim Nexus - mods and community- Better looking potions/poisons.
Better Shaped Weapons - BSW at Skyrim Nexus - mods and community- Better looking weapons.
Warburgs 3D Paper World Map at Skyrim Nexus - mods and community- Paper map.

Character:
CBBE, UNP, whatever are all fine. Just go through the list of the most popular and see which ones you want. All are easy to install and figure out, just make sure that your face/body/skeleton/armor mods are compatible. You will want to pickup:
RaceMenu at Skyrim Nexus - mods and community

Gameplay:
SkyUI at Skyrim Nexus - mods and community- SkyUI. Essential.
Categorized Favorites Menu at Skyrim Nexus - mods and community- Keeps your favorites menu clean and organized.
Immersive Armors at Skyrim Nexus - mods and community- Way more armor types. Lore friendly.
Immersive Weapons at Skyrim Nexus - mods and community- Same as above, but for weapons.
Alternate Start - Live Another Life at Skyrim Nexus - mods and community- Right into character creation and then you choose where you'd like to start the game. Good if you've already played through the game once or twice.

There are tons more, but running these will give you a good base to start off with. This guide:Skyrim Project Stability-Increase performance and NEVER freeze again at Skyrim Nexus - mods and communitywill help you stabilize your PC and mod list to minimize CTD's. I haven't had a single memory issue or CTD since I've optimized this mod list.

I always assumed that Skyrim Redone and Duel weren't compatible, since they both revamp combat alot.

How do you take decent SS? Someone had request ingame shots from piles of visual mods and mine is looking fairly pretty after a lot of tinkering, but every SS I take gets compressed or something and looks all jagged and far too dark?

Here's two small ones I use. Both could be considered cheats or annoyance fixes, you decide.

Beefier DawnbreakerImproves the stats on Dawnbreaker so it's worth using past level 10

Archmage NecklaceLets you get a necklace with the same stats as the arch-mage robe so you don't end up wearing the same robe for 50 levels

Necklace is a good idea. I went with this texture replacer on my mage playthrough. Turns the archmage robe into a black greybeard robe. Looked good with a dragonpriest mask.

Most mods are optional with the exception of SkyUI which I think is pretty mandatory. I also use UFO for followers, Real Lighting w/customization, Immersive armor and weapons, plus a number of texture packs.

A good resource for skyrim mod information is at dead end thrills where a game photographer has put up some incredible screenshots of mods in action:

Most of the configurations used aren't playable, but it gives a good showing of what the limits and options are.

Few more mods you can find at nexus, should use the nexus mod manager to install everything unless it specifically says not to:
The choice is yours
bellyache's hd dragon replacer
Ihud
Categorized Favorites Menu

Ihud and CFM along with the latest version of skyui require skse (skyrim script extender) to work properly. Older versions of skyui used skse, but it wasn't absolutely necessary, this latest version won't even install itself if you don't have skse because so much depends on it. If you're not sure on how to install something remember there is a youtube video for that. It isn't rocket science, but I'm sure watching the videos saved me a few headaches. So if you're not 100% sure, watch a youtube video on how to install skse and any enbs if that interests you.

Are there any mods that are practically necessary for a first-time play through? I've been meaning to start this up for a while, but keep putting it off.

SkyUI I'd say is essential, just so you aren't raging at the shitty console interface your whole playthrough. Most of the mods posted here are graphical in nature so are entirely optional. That said, some of them are so good (like climates of tamriel) that I'd really encourage everyone to use them, but they are just plain better than all the default stuff.

First off Nexus Mod Manager:
http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/modmanager/

Along with SkyUI as Ronne suggested, I would use Categorized Favorites Menu. The standard Favorites menu is fairly annoying to use a lot:
http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/4862

I'd also say the unofficial patches are required, as they fix quite a lot of bugs:
http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/19- vanillia Skyrim patch.
http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/23491- Dawnguard patch.
http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/25127- Hearthfire patch.

Plus one more bug-fixing mod:
http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/24020

For a first play through that should do it.
