Come on guys,

They leave people/characters/stories/origins unexplained - people complain.
They try to give background to a character - people complain.

I guess being a writer/director for the Star Wars series is like being a content producer for an WoW, GG lol.
Characters need a background equal to their status in the universe, ideally in the movie they are actually in and not a retcon later.

Palpatine backstory the prequels was fine as he was one of the most important people in galactic history. Him not having a backstory in the original movies was forgivable because everything else was such good quality, but the expanded universe had to pick up the slack and explain the Sith as you can't continue the force story with someone like that unexplained - that's why the prequels are about him - the backstory was nessesary to expand the universe.

Snoke was an attempt to continue the story without explaining where powerful darksiders come from since he didn't fit into what had been explained in the prequels. He needed a backstory. The numerous issues with The Last Jedi make it not one nitpick in an otherwise great movie, but one item in a list of things which went wrong.

Han Solo was a nobody in the right place at the right time with no special skills unexplained by him being an experienced smuggler. He doesn't need a backstory.

Luke did have special skills and needed a backstory, he fucked around hitting small targets on his speeder/farm equipment bored in the desert, so he can pilot and use ship guns. He is the son of a powerful Jedi so can use the force. However he sucks with a lightsaber at first because he has no combat experience.

Rey has special skills and needs a backstory, she is a scavenger of imperial/rebel ships and is good with hand to hand combat since she has to fight for survival, that explains her being good with a lightsaber and being able to escape imperial structures. Why is she a good pilot, a good shot with a turret and strong with the force? She needs more backstory.

Back stories are mainly there to milk more money. No one really needs them. TPM and the other two were there because Vader was a favorite character and Hollywood loves milking. Just like Negan is a favorite for TWD and everyone has been milking him in all formats. The OT worked so well because it was a fantastic coming of age story. The prequels(and most prequels) had lots of things going against them; the results are already known which sucks, you will always disappoint someone's expectations, and Hollywood has a hard time hiring competent writers much less good ones.

Hollywood loves smelling their own farts, making money off terrible prequels, and always showing how grey the world is. Look, bad guy has some issues to make him bad! Look how cool we are! Star Wars is too valuable to not milk but Hollywood's track record speaks for itself.

So when does this movie take place in the chronology exactly?

Because by the time ANH comes around Han was clearly a middle aged career criminal. But if this has the Empire being around and him getting into the game its like 10 years before ANH or something?

I remember the gap between ANH and RotS is like 20 years or so?

They don’t say explicitly but it starts roughly 10 years before ANH and then does the jump forward 3 years. So in the 6-7 years before ANH by the end.

Wookiepedia sources the Solo: A Star Wars Story The Official Guide as putting it 13-10 BBY (A New Hope)

That makes sense with the age. Harrison Ford was 37 or something in A New Hope.

Second weekend numbers are pretty bad. Projections at 29M. It's definitely in the flop category now.

This is firmly in the dumpster fire category at this point. The film looks like it won't even sniff $400mm worldwide, which indicates the studio losing at least $100mm on the production of the movie. More importantly though, it shows that the Star Wars brand has been severely damaged and is no longer the box office threat it used to be. This means Disney won't be getting the cushy release windows that they had in the past with other studios afraid to put anything of significance close to the Star Wars premiere.

First, I still think Disney is going to use Solo's poor performance as an excuse to double down on the "The Force Is Female" bullshit in the future. The fat lady hasn't sung yet if you know what I mean.

Second, at this point I've already watched a couple hours worth of great youtube videos about how bad the Solo movie is. So there's still some entertainment to be milked from at least one or two more failed Star Wars movies before I personally will get tired of the mockery videos.

My two big takeaways from this are apparently on ship is now the millennial Falcon since having feminism bot installed into it and second people need to stop giving Emilia Clarke any acting work until she has her tits out again or gets cornholed by Momoa another time. It's an average movie with these in action sequences and a couple of really good scenes and a lot of forgettable ones. I probably liked it more than I would have otherwise because Last Jedi was so terrible.
