From what I'm hearing the 1.0 patch broke the hell out of the Arena Commander module.

The moment it goes to the in game footage, I lose all interest and they already have my money. I don't give a shit about dog fights and more FPS nonsense, and racing? uggh The more time passes the more I think it's going to be a big disappointment. I want a space adventure game with incredible depth, we are going to get an action game with little depth outside of visual spaceship details.

The funny thing is they actually discussed mining to some detail during the Livestream (Tony's team from Texas) since they have parts of it already working internally but it's still mostly in R&D.

Long story short they are using voxel tech to build out asteroids. So think of it a bit more like Minecraft in that sense. We don't know yet if you have to crack the shell or you just start with a vein that is already exposed. Either way you setup your drilling rig and you will have to guide it so that should make botting harder.

Tony discussed what you can run into along the way such as gas pockets which you can set off as an explosion which would shatter the asteroid and most likely kill you and everything within range. The way he described it he wants everyday mundane things such as mining/salvaging and even trading be a risk where you risk dying by doing that job. You may never ever face someone trying to discharge their weapon at you in anger but you may die just as much as a fighter pilot or a marine.

Another example they gave is a science job. Ever since people wouldn't shut up about not having any type of science job planned for release due to how hard it is to come up with stuff that's meaningful Tony has been thinking of ways to please those people. The example was a comet you have to gather certain type of data on. The specific example he described was taking a certain number of images of the comet from within a certain distance within the tail. The comet will constantly throw off various material, dust and gas that you will have to dodge, kind of like you seen in the movie Armageddon although that was a big ass asteroid, with your ship to get within distance. Screw it up and you are toast. Another example could be getting within a certain distance or a specific spot of a space anomaly or a large planet or other celestial object. All of which will run various risks that can kill you.

Don't expect to see the science stuff until 2016 IMO but we might see asteroid mining in late 2015.

I guess mining asteroid fields in Eve is end game content to some people.
Maybe he wants a game where the known universe is ruled by an evil empire controlling it's water? Where he has to team up with some friendly pirates and scour the galaxy till he finds a legendary water supply on a lost planet? Huh huh?

Naaaah.

Should I just pledge in at the lowest level or is there some added benefit of paying more for the higher levels?

I can see that the insurance time frames change and there's other added benefits of pledging higher, but without having read too much into the game, I'm not sure what most of it means.

I'm gonna echo RhoA's question a bit here, but: I want to try the game out, but I can't really figure out much from the FAQS. I think the game is split into different sections at this point, and to try them you have to pledge at different spots? Arena Commander, etc. Anybody have any advice?

I can help.

The game is in two major modules right now; Hangar Module and Arena Commander. Two more major modules are planned prior to release; FPS Module and Social Module. Squadron 42 is separate and as long as you have Alpha or Beta access you will get to play it at some stage prior to release.

Arena Commander, FPS and the Social Module all require a $5 pass unless your game package already includes access to it. Currently only Arena Commander exists so that's the only Pass you can actually buy or find in any package. The others will show up as those modules are released.

Alpha access means you don't need to buy a pass. It means you purchased a package early enough in development so you get into everything without further payment. The only packages I can currently find Alpha access on is priced $1,100 and above. They are $5 each so if that's your "thing" it's crazy to spend that kind of money just for that when you can buy the passes for a total of $15 all in. The only other way to get Alpha access cheaper is via the grey market but you are taking a risk.

Beta access means you have to buy a Pass to get into Arena Commander and the other Modules but you get access to the Hangar and Squadron 42 before game launch. Not sure how they will gate access to the Persistent Universe. My best understanding is that PU access will come from the Social Module Pass but we don't know for sure.

Buying a ship on its own will get you nothing in terms of access but you get a ship when the game launches but still no game so you will have to buy the game at retail price. I think they let you pledge for ships on their own to give you that freedom but to be honest they probably shouldn't unless you get a package first.

Anyway the best package to get you started is the Arena Commander Starter Package. Besides Beta and Arena Commander access you also get the Aurora MR which is currently the best ship to start upgrading from. I say this because you can upgrade to another starter ship from it for free or go back if you don't like that.

It's $45. Go here:https://robertsspaceindustries.com/p...mander-Starter

There is a cheaper $30 Aurora ES package but it doesn't include the Arena Commander pass and you can't upgrade from the ES version of that ship to the base model of the other starter for free. I think it's worth skipping over it unless the $10 difference breaks the bank in which case why are you pledging in the first place.

To switch from the Aurora MR to the Mustang Alpha grab this and apply it in the Hangar on the website:https://robertsspaceindustries.com/p...-Alpha-Upgrade

To switch back to the Aurora MR grab this and apply it in the Hangar on the website:https://robertsspaceindustries.com/p...ora-MR-Upgrade

They are working on revamping the entire system so it makes sense but right now you need to know what you are doing before you start messing around with ship upgrades. The only good thing is if you screw it up CS will likely unscrew the pooch for you. CS is actually pretty good for this game but there are some things even they can't do.

If you have any questions just ask. I'll check back on this thread later.

You know I don't get the spiteful hate from people. E: D isn't the same game. The two are quite different. That said E: D is apparently a fun game for many and it's great to see more space games. But the two are not comparable.

It's not spiteful hate -- at least, not from me... More like incredulousness that you're referring to Star Citizen as a game. At this point its a tech demonstration and a concept. So, you're right in a sense that E: D is not comparable to the IDEA of Star Citizen. Then again, how could anything ever compare to the idea of Star Citizen when they're selling their customersevery possible idea?

Yeah, one is a defined game and is released. The other is a tech demo and hopium funded by people who pay thousands for virtual items they can't use. The reason SC gets so much heat from veteran gamers is because we know that unreleased games can't be judged and people shouldn't spend their money on them.

Why are you trying to redefine the term "game". I think most of us understand what that term means. Calling it a tech demonstration is like calling any very early Friends and Family Alpha testing of a game that occurs years before release a tech demonstration and concept. I have been through several of those including Hellgate London. Hellgate London was a game. It was an abortion but it was a game. Lets try and not re-invent the wheel please.

Call it what it is. An early Alpha access "game".
