The fact that they have player models makes me excited that maybe you have to actually board the enemy flagship to win once you bring down the defenses, ala Titan Mode in BF2142.

Gameplay wise it appears to be some kind of escort.

People are saying this is MOBA-like so maybe there are bot ships in addition to players and the escort ships are what spawn the bots?

Just watched the EA live and this is just battlefront 2 flying part of the game. I mean it even looks like they copied battlefront 2 levels. Crossplay even in VR.
