I'm surprised Disney didn't age the character models by a couple of years with it starting up again, because more toys and merchandising.

edit: This was a VFX before and after video that Disney had sent to certain members of the Academy for nomination consideration. It got out but they're having it yanked, damnit.

No Academy Award nominations for Star Wars in any major category. At least the critics didn't have the wool pulled over their eyes.

is this guy retarded?
He does seem to be a bit obsessed.

I am a bit surprised at not even any nominations in the major categories though. I was guessing it would be like LotR, where they heap tons of award wins on the last film in the trilogy regardless of whether it earned them or not.

LotR is better then this. Pretty sure no one was actually claiming this was better then 7 or 8 out of 10.
its no Mad Max. No one thinks it is.

But average or slightly better then average IS a giant step up from the last Starwars entries. Its probably better then the StarTrek entries as well. Which also, were not good enough to win any awards.

lol. you should reread the thread. plenty of nerds with unhealthy emotional attachments to the series came running in and called it 8.5/10, 9/10, and more.

problem with that is that in order for it to be like LotR it would have to be a good movie rather than just being slightly better than mediocre.

Real problem is none of those movies should have been nominated. I loved LotR, every second of it. But it's not original, it's not really acting as much as it is CGI and cosplay, it's basically porn.

As for the Academy Awards it's a massive circle-jerk. Surely no one thinks the Academy Awards have anything to do with talent and/or hard work? Watch the fucking BAFTA's and you will be humiliated by what we call acting, and even the Brits have become somewhat of an embarrassment. I'm not saying we should go back to Shakespearean drama, but we are at the point where "actors" are nothing more than folks acting like themselves after 5 minutes of soul searching to find their "character" as opposed to the real actors having resumes that included a decade of tutelage under folks comparable to Branaugh and Gielgud, voice coaching, blocking, an actual dedication to their craft. Instead it's "lemme finish my joint and someone put some makeup on me and get me the script". It's an era John Wayne, James Dean, and Marilyn Monroe would have been considered damn fine thespians.

LoTR's Oscar wins were the result of a huge lobbying campaign (which let's be honest is simply part of the process every year at this point) aimed at rewarding New Line and encouraging other studios to back massive epic scale movies like the Ben Hur's of old. Fucking Oprah was hawking the trilogy for wins on her own show. I'm sure she watched all of them multiple times each.

i get the feeling watching a movie with you would be about as much fun as slamming my penis in a car door.

Ben Hur is a great comparison. Yeah, and I don't think either one of us would consider Return of the King a bad movie. It's a great movie. But c'mon, we're not going to put Aragon in the same room let alone the same Universe as Daniel Day Lewis. And 5 minutes of The Departed was more powerful in terms of acting and direction than the entirety of most action films.

edit: I just mention that film because I recently re-watched it, and it was better than 95% of the shit I've seen since. And Lewis wasn't in it, but the guy should win every year we don't have an actual nominee.

I just received my Hot Toys First Order Stormtrooper Set, which is 1 regular Stormtrooper, and the Heavy Gunner with a big ass gun.

They look pretty damn impressive. I can't wait to get home, and actually pose and display them.

Outside of the first installment, which was groundbreaking in many ways and was at a time when Lucas was seen as a young, talented visionary of a director, the franchise has never gotten a lot of love from the Academy. Otherwise TFA is on par with the rest of the OT in this regard.
