I think it draws a hardcore buzz for the Thrawn angle and general fan fare. JJ has demonstrated he is willing to do press for the movie, go above and beyond to tell people its different this time (while still respecting Johnson as a director).
JJ uses Thrawn to address the elephant in the room-- the lack of an Empire of any significance. It's well receieved and people are interested in Star Wars again.
Despite that possibility, I'm calling a prediction now of 950 million. Will just barely miss bombing and the GoT trilogy doesn't see a release within the next 5 years.
If Thrawn is going to be used, he should only be used at the end of 9 to show that there is hope for future Star Wars movies.
While the resistance celebrates, one of the last scenes is a First Order shuttle fleeing to a fleet of Star Destroyers. An FO officer is standing before a desk, giving a verbal report of how Snoke is dead, the First Order has scattered, etc.
Of course, behind the desk is Thrawn, who thanks the officer for the information, and then orders his XO to invite all the command staff to dinner to discuss that it's time to take action. (Thrawn could not compete with a brute force user like Snoke, so he just laid low until Snoke did something dumb to off himself.)
If they are going to use Thrawn to win back fans, they need to understand the source material, or they are just going to throw gasoline on the fire (e.g. Thrawn would be a trilogy in his own right, Thrawn isn't going to lose a battle because of the antics of a magical Jedi girl or a couple of ace pilots, and there will be no lame comedy or incompetent moves made by anyone on Thrawn's side because Thrawn would have weeded that shit out a long time ago).
You would think they couldn't do worse, but using Thrawn improperly is probably the only thing worse than making Luke a depressed quitter who fucked off to hide somewhere when his family needed him most.
