Starfield - Fallout fallout that isn't ES6

It's crazy to me that there aren't points of interest for players to explore in their ship that function largely as classic Bethesda dungeons. Everything about the engine seems to support it and it'd be inline with their typical gameplay loops. Anything from exploring the interior of a large asteroid to a derelict space manufacturing center to an asteroid field etc with rando mobs to kill, a boss at the end and a chest would be a lot of fun.

Given that you can apparently fly from Earth to Pluto seemlessly, having a warp-speed mode that's between the gravdrive and normal propulsion also seems feasible. I wonder if players can easily increase their ship speed 1000x and what that does to the engine.

Yeah that would be neat. Most of the things you run into like the space stations, caves etc. are typical copy pasta layouts with random enemy npcs or completely empty and rarely rewarding loot. I really only go to them if they are tagged in a quest or something you pick up that triggers it. ex: I think I read a book or something that sent me to earth's moon and let me loot a trinket.

Anyone found a derelict atlas ship with a bunch of dead people on it, and a message about having hidden whatever it was the attackers were looking for? The message says they didn't find it, but now I can't find anything there either.

Think it's a random encounter, but I found the ship right by The Den.

tried out Starfield Performance Optimization and it appears to be dramatically higher performance, but I didn't do any real benchmarks. It's not a true "mod" in the Bethesda modding sense, so I think it has zero-risk of ruining a savegame.

All that does is edit your .ini files to change your settings and lowers the quality of various things which you could do manually for the most part. Wouldn't bother if not on a potato PC or if you aren't already having issues.

No, but I got a quest to kill some big dick ship that was L35 with a few L10-14 escorts near The Den when I was like L22. Maybe it was related?

I can't wait for the future, where instead of opening a door you simply click on it to load screen right through it. Can even click some doors, turn and run, and it will load you through the door from down the hallway. Some really genius design language. How can you not love this classic Bethesda experience.

How do you send a player to fucking Venus and make it so anticlimactic it's like, shrug, guess I'll just fast travel from the mission menu to the next location. Oh the moon. Shrug.

They couldn't even at least make an interesting load screen animation out of it? Just, load, plop, yeah that's the moon or whatever stay here in place reading UI popups and the yammering NPCs until the game lets you follow the next blue mission marker.

This game is lazy dogshit ironically made by people who hate the consumers making them rich who then perpetuate a cycle of enabling more lazy dogshit game design.

Anyone not trying to rationalize a preorder actually think this game is any good?

Damn haven't gotten that one and I go to den a lot to sell contraband.

Only derelict thing I have found was a derelict starstation. And it was by accident. I was at a planet, turnning my view around to travel somewhere and a PoI market popped up in the hud and said "uknown"(exactly what happens when on a planet, but never seen it in space) but I could travel to it. Popped out to the starstation , filled with pirates and bunch of safes stolen from bank job. There was 4 safes in a the structure, each had about 4-6k credits in it. Was a decent payout clearing the place + that.

Also very hard on this game is a big difference. I was on hard, switched to very hard to see. The enemies seem to have the same health, but man are they are a much better shot. I was burning through med packs compared to normal. And in one instance, I peeked into a room from a doorway and was instantly killed from 50% health. Shocked the hell out of me, thought it was a bug at first.

Nah, the .ini exposes more settings than are available ingame. Here's the diff between ultra and the modified ultra.

The final straw for me is Alpha Centauri is a single star system. Uninstalled....

BG3 continues to hold hundreds of thousands more players than Starfield.

That station is related to a questline in that system - basically some independent settlers are getting owned by Spacers. It culminates with you attacking the spacer fleet and that station.

Doubt it. A friend of mine was towing that line for the first few days after I told him it's never too late to refund (see Quinn 25h /played refund). He went harder than anyone on FOH defending this game in Discord.

Now a few days later, he hasn't been on the game at all and stopped towing the line, now admitting the game is mid. I think he's completely done with it having gone through the hype and pre-order rationalization phase. But he got his "40 hours" out of it.

Yeah Starfield sales numbers will be kind of weird because of gamepass. MS doesn't post gamepass sub numbers so who knows how well it's going to end up doing.

I think the game is about a 7.5 if I tried to give it a number. I did buy the preorder. I am playing it a lot and not regretting it. There's a number of things that could be different or better but it's very much scratching an itch. I really like the building even if the game purpose fades as you finish research/skills. The exploration still has plenty of interesting visuals even if there's not some great secret/mystery waiting around. I actually think most of the graphics are very appealing. The lighting is really well done in most places. It's unfortunate but I think New Atlantis is the lamest of the big cities.

I was perhaps not predisposed to be disappointed by the space travel elements because I didn't care for Elite Dangerous and despite many tries and 30-40 hours played (after many patches, not near release), I could never get into NMS. I forced myself to play many of those hours because I kept reading how good it became. I actually appreciate that the planets in Starfield are more grounded as NMS planets usually felt too exotic to me. I like that Starfield is still mostly humans unlike many other space RPGs.

For an analogy, it's the kind of game you wouldn't pick for your last meal but it's an enjoyable buffet to visit regularly where I can always find something I want.

But he got his "40 hours" out of it.

This is my favorite rationalization. The notion they got their money's worth so everything is juuuust fine. Because all they ever wanted from an epic Bethesda space game was a few dozen hours of good enough.

Often accompanied by: Cheaper than the movies! Better deal than going out to dinner! Calculated with inflation based on 1970s prices video games should cost $300 so it's ookaaay.

People are broken, and gamers are almost people. Sucks though because just like a lot of pop culture stuff watching it in confused awe becomes more interesting than participating. Watching the gaming industry has becomeore interesting than playing the games. I just want good games to play, but here we are.

Just feels more of the same to me honestly. 25 years and they still can't make models that don't look like Pat from SNL? If you're going to spend 90% of the game with these npcs at least make a few that dont look like they're from a modern swimsuit edition.

BG3 is a better game.

But you are so pathetic to look for anything to post to continue whatever weird crusade you have. So obsessed with others having fun without you.

"Look guys BG3 still has a better all time rank then starfield!", as if you had anything to do with either or anyone was actually comparing them.

It's basically a broken record between you and the other idiot posting.

Ugh back to just pretending you don't exist after this. Shame on me for being baited by either you idiots.

Ah, it was just weird to see an "unknown" marker in space. Thought it was a UI bug at first.

I'm glad I ignored all the talk straight through release day so I had no expectations or hype.

After binging it 40 some odd hours since release I am firmly in the camp that 8-10 ratings are all copium and paid actors. Game is a solid 7 without encumbrance and a solid 6 with it. Yes I hate encumbrance that much. Good enough to kill some time, but not good enough to shout from the rafters. A perfect Gamepass game and great base for modders to make it special down the road.

It's a bummer ES6 is going to be using the same creation engine because it really shows its age. It needs replacing or to be rebuilt from the ground up, but instead we are no doubt going to get something that looks like it's straight out of 2011 again for the ease of modding and development.
