I've been thinking of buying one of the complete collected versions of it. How ever there seems to be a bunch of different versions I think.

The newer versions are apparently censored (at Shirow's request) so try to find an older copy if you can. Some of the older versions flipped it to read left to right if you care about that.

Or just go sailing and look for whatever version looks good to you.

Yep. The original manga had a lot more humor alongside the more serious aspects. The movie was just so successful that adaptations after that kept closer to it in tone.

The original manga is pretty short, only 10 chapters or so. If you end up liking this version of the anime it's worth a read.
To be fair, that OG movie was a cinematic masterpiece and one of the seminal anime experiences of all time.

Yep, that was the movie that got me into anime. Can't blame them one bit for sticking to the more serious tone.

Wonder why it got so many people into anime?

Not that it was a bad one /to/ get people into anime lol but this was all during the big anime flood and "we gotz boobs here" was a driving force...

Sad that Bumpkin swordmaster on 'zon was only ep 1 - guess its a release schedule. It seems good so far, was a nice opening episode - has the same feel. But I think it is heading to a change in his demeanor some.

My early Anime history was DBZ on what I think was Cartoon Network at the time. I liked the show, and went to ebay and bought the entire series (Dragonball, Dragonball Z & Dragonball GT) from some dude that was selling fansubs. It was terrible quality and broken into like 25-30 DVD's, but I watched all of it. Then Gundam Wing was broadcast as well. That's what fully got me hooked. Every 6-months following the initial release, Suncoast Video would do an official DVD sale. Gundam Wing was broken into 10 disks (They sold them for about $40/ea), then later yet, an 11th disk for The Endless Waltz movie. I've been watching anime ever since.

Tits and ultra violence. Movie #2 was Ninja Scroll.

La Blue Girl was my first introduction to anime. Needless to say it was many years before I gave anime another try.

Very interesting development in Slime, or it would be very interesting if my first thought wasn't "boy i wonder how the writer will squander this"

not counting DB DBZ and shit that was adapted in France during my childhood, the real first anime i watched in japanese subbed was berserk.

We watched that shit with a bunch of friends and I remember to this day the WTF when the eclipse happened, and the absolute silence at the end of the episode after Guts hacked his arm off.

Holy fuck.

Hm, when I was a young kid I remember watching several Macross and Robotech shows, then nothing until college when a work friend had me find Urotsukidoji: Legend of the Overfiend, lol. Several years after that I guess the first real anime I watched was Bleach and Naruto (til Naruto vs. Sasuke, lost interest after that). First "modern" anime that I really liked would have been Parasyte, which got me into watching seasonal stuff.

I enjoyed the 2nd episode of Exiled Heavy Warrior. People complain about the visuals, but I'm down. It's a beautiful computer anime. At the same time, I like World is Dancing. That's a beautiful traditional style anime. Hell, it's probably computer also, but it LOOKS old school. Very similar to a show from a few years ago, The Elusive Samurai. It is very reminiscent of that as far as animation style and use of color.

I'll be 45 in almost as many days (42 actually). While I do have a lot of shit wrong with me, fortunately I don't feel old. But I guess that's just a mindset. People don't start to look old until they personally feel old. If you start doing old shit, you'll become what you're dreading. In my head, I'm still a spry 20-something. Except I have more responsibilities as well as my own family now.
