it wont be long before message boards will be required to make people use their real names and locations so all of us will be answerable for what we say here.
The defense to something like that is to not be a jackass or have the internet persona of a jackass.

Well, mostly. Some people would lose out on jobs because of silly shit like "the guy is a gamer", etc.

nobody is entitled to their opinion anymore, we all have to keep our mouths shut even in the privacy of our own home because somebody somewhere might repeat what you said to certain authorities and YOU WILL BE PUNISHED IF YOUR VIEWS DO NOT JIBE WITH THEIRS.

The NBA is a business. What this guy said was bad for business. It sounds like what you're really saying is you hate capitalism. Capitalism can, and will, bring about greater tyranny than government control because cost/benefit, in terms of strict dollar values, becomes the only morality.

But the NBA is a government sanctioned and supported monopoly. And monopolies are bad.

capitalism is great, if people dont like that the owner of the clippers is a racist, they can vote with their wallets, the players can decide to break their contracts and refuse to play for him and give him back the millions they recieved playing on his team. its not for a league disphit who gets some bad press to force somebody to sell their property based on no laws but just because the press was on his back to "do something"

Why do you go on about shit you have no clue about? "A league dipshit" was hired by all the owners, including your man crush Donald Sterling, to deal with shit just like this. He agreed to hire him, just like he agreed to the rules that are allowing him to be forced to sell the team. Stop white knighting this guy who's 100% to blame for where he is

I agree that the bullshit that goes on between the government and the sports leagues is retarded. The federal government should get out of it completely. And at the state level, so many public funds are used for private profit with regards to stadiums and such.

no white knighting going on here, he deserves to be "cwitisized" (really dude?). what he doesnt deserve is to have something he owns outright to be taken away because somebody is rustled about what sterling's opinions are. if the nba doesnt want him in their league, thats totally fine. i support that even though that also probably breaks some laws too. sterling doesnt own the league, just the team and they should have the right to decide who they want in their league. ditto with the lifetime ban because the team is still part of the nba.

Dozens of sponsors did vote with their wallets and chose to walk away. Who knows how many more would have outright walked away from their general sponsorship of the NBA if nothing was done.

Lots of players were allegedly refusing to play and would have broken their contracts, but it didn't work out that way so I guess we'll never know.

Think of the NBA constitution as the law of the NBA, and yes, he agreed to it and yes, it allows the other owners to force him to sell his team. It's like a contract for owning a team in the most simple of analogies.

In short, seriously stop.

fine, if he signed a contract that states if the press learns he is a racist he should be forced to sell his own team, then he should follow the rules. its an odd rule though, the dude was a known racist for decades and everyone was fine with him. even the NAACP gave him lifetime achievement awards. i guess its only a bannable offense if he is recorded in private. very odd contract, wouldnt you say?

Contracts have to be 100% specific to all situations.

That's why Air Bud was able to play basketball. The rule book never said dogs weren't allowed to play basketball and that's how the world works in Maester Chuk's mind

Chuk, you've got some decent points... but you're actually doing a disservice to those points the more you talk about them.

Where's the outrage against Spike Lee who is part owner of a NBA team who said after returning from a trip to Africa "I seriously wanted to pick up a gun and shoot whites. The only way to resolve matters is by bloodshed.".

The simplest way to explain it is that if there's something in an owner's personal life that will cause the rest of the owners to lose a lot of money, they will be kicked out. If it were a different owner who's behavior was causing Sterling to lose money he'd vote them out in heartbeat.

You can complain that it's not right that these tapes were made public or that the players/public are overreacting, but NBA did the only reasonable thing they could be expected to do.

There is such a rule, though it is broader that your specific hypothetical; conduct detrimental to the League.

Forcing him to sell is actual doing him a favor, believe it or not. If they said, "Keep your team Donald, we're just not going to schedule any of our teams to play yours. Have a nice life." just how much value would you imagine the standalone LA Clippers to have going forward? Aside from the physical property the team owned and any merchandising the team could still muster, not very much. A sports team is not a standalone entity, in terms of it's value. That value is, largely, based upon it's relationship to the other franchises. Requiring him to sell it while maintaining that relationship preserves it's value for him to capitalize on.

All of the professional sports leagues in the US are de facto cartels, something prohibited under anti-trust law. MLB has the only exemption to those laws, by federal statute (which was the grounds for Congress nosing around the PED issue in baseball a few years ago). The thing is, in order for those leagues to function in the manner that fans want them to, with some measure of a level playing field that doesn't completely favor the small handful of large market teams and basic self-governance, they have to engage in a certain level of cartel behavior which the government basically turns a blind eye to. No one in government would win any popularity points taking the initiative to go after any of the leagues, so baring some egregious abuses, they pretty much let them get away with it. They should just grant exemptions to all of the major sports leagues.

I agree with you on the public funding of stadiums. That shit is abused all to high heaven. Another abuse at the state level, when it really comes down to it, is the money the states make on college athletics via the NCAA, which is largely composed of public universities.

You see, if they actually had the balls and were truly standing up to a bigot and punishing him for his sins, they would do that. But they wont because that would hurt their pocket book and thats all they care about as its obviously been known. They didnt give two shits Sterling was denying black people housing or any of the other stunts he pulled.

This is pretty much why I stopped giving a shit about the NBA. Look at the clippers, an absolute shit team for three decades and the owner still saw a profit. Owners have zero incentive to properly manage a team because at the end of the day they make money no matter what.

Its worse than that seeing as how very few universities make any money on their athletics program.
