The US and the UK are two of the rare markets where the X360 is far ahead of the PS3 (Canada and Australia being the other two afaik), so really the UK is not representative of Europe in that regard.
That's because people that speak American stick together.

i can foresee nextbox being upgraded to their midori os and being backwards compatible.
the appeal being that of a new mainstream lang (http://www.infoq.com/articles/Joe-Du...fe-Parallelism). old singularity os 's goals was safety over speed, but i still envision there being alot of speedups with static proven games, etc possibly running in ring 0.

then again, lack of cross compatibility and effort to make a new engine is another thing. maybe rust 1.0 will be out by then :p

Exclusive titles that are important enough to actually sell systems will absolutely show up on the top sales charts.
Nonsense, just look at things like forza - the hardcore racing simm'ers will buy the console to get it, no questions asked. Doesn't mean there's enough of them to make it a top 10 bestseller. Same with the assorted JRPGs Sean is talking about only moreso.

Perhaps you meant the number of people who buy systems to get them won't make a huge difference in the total console sales ? I'd agree with that ;p

And this leads in to one reason that Always Online will always be a terrible, stupid idea. Some day the company behind it will just completely shut off the service supporting it and your hardware will be a useless brick and anything you bought for it will be unplayable.

Fuck anyone who lets Always Online ever come to pass.

To be fair, there's more money, in last generation at least in winning the English speaking countries.

Sean, I personally agree. As someone who happily admits to the title of core gamer or hardcore gamer, doubly so.

For the beancounters of the world, what matters is number of customers. I'm sure Nintendo looked at the number of people using those online applications, saw it was near zero, and said, kill it. The same story is part of the reason why Sony cut PS2 compatibility from the later generations of PS3 - almost no one was using it.

There is a difference when you pay for a physical copy of something and retain it even if the next generation doesn't support it vs. buying an online copy of something and then having no access to it in any way shape or form at a later date.

Bill Gates doesn't want you to own things in general, they want to "license" it to you. Like you're a criminal if you disrupt their ability to make a buck off you.

So if the nextbox is always on they could ban your account and turn your system into a brick right? and if you bought a bunch of games digitally like steam they could kill your entire library to boot?

No Tuco, every single corporation and person with more than 5 zero's in their bank account personally hates you and the only reason they are in business is to personally take a huge steamy shit on your consumer rights.

That's the ugliest fucking thing I have ever seen.

And I'm assuming it's just a mock up because there's no way they put out something like that that would need a huge stand to sit horizontal and would be like 8" high in that case.

Bill Gates is a saint compared to the vast majority of human beings who have ever and will ever live. He also has nothing to do with Microsoft anymore and hasn't for a long time, unfortunately.

Fan concept art of consoles is 99.9% terrible.

Yet another reason why Always Online is stupid and should never even beconsidered:http://www.gameinformer.com/b/news/a...in-issues.aspx

[Update]Microsoft has sounded the all-clear with regard to sign-in issues. However, it seems that other parts of the service are experiencing problems. According to Microsoft's Xbox Live status page,

"We are aware of an issue members are having sending and receiving messages, seeing friend's statuses, sending or receiving game and party invites, and accepting friend requests on Xbox LIVE. We are currently working as fast as we can to get this issue fixed, thank you for your patience during this time and we will update you with any new information we receive."

[Original Story]

My own attempts to sign into Xbox Live have proven difficult, and the official Xbox support Twitter account tweeted that is working to resolve the issue.

It's never a good time for Microsoft's Xbox Live service to go down, but the timing is especially bad right now amidst rumors that the next Xbox will require an always-online connection - something our readers are not happy about.

We'll be sure to post an update when Xbox Live's issues are resolved. You can also check Microsoft's official status page.
...

Xbox live has completely gone out for over a week before. Imagine that happening and not being able to play games because there's a connection issue on there end.

And remember when Sony was hacked and their service was down for like at least a month? Yeah. Thank god they're smart enough to not go with Always Online this time around.

Anyone who does this crap is going to be a massive target for cyber-attacks as well. I'm sure we'll see a lot of outages the first time anyone tries to implement this.

That just makes me hope they do get attacked, and the backlash from it makes them release a console that doesn't require it. Looks like I will be a PS4 only owner : /

As someone who wasn't affected by the issues sony had I when being hacked I was still annoyed by the hackivism, but I can't say I'd look the same way at an always on console getting the same treatment.
