Binged the first three episodes, I liked it enough but it isn't hitting the amazing heights of season 1 for me. A show about a bunch of people on earth doing their shit isn't that interesting to me. What WAS totally different and fascinating was a show about people in the afterlife coping with a complete different reality to what our day to day lives are. Lose that and to me this show loses a lot of its charm and is really just coasting on the chemistry between the actors.
I guess they also did answer the question at the end of episode 3, the 4 are alive "for real" and its not a simulation or whatever, but it kinda loses its setup when the judge just hand waves away the ripple effects of them not dying.

Well, this gives the writers a chance to do a few new things:
1) Michael and Janet dealing with being powerless. Janet especially will have a hard time lol
2) Pretty clear the writers will be setting up Chidi with the ultimate choice down the line: Simone or Eleanor.
3) Try to construct an explanation as to why everyone won't end up in The Bad Place eventually
My guess is they neutralize enough points to maybe get a medium place? Or maybe their actions sway the Judge enough to make some sort of compromise/allowance?

The big choice was hinted at in the opening part of the third season : alternate timelines. Them not dying has radically changed the timeline of Earth in a super butterfly-effect sort of way. When they become fully aware of what happened they will have to decide if they should live as better people now or go back to being dead and fix things.
The eventual end game has to be setting up a much larger Medium Place for people who aren't saints but also aren't terrible with Eleanor as its main person welcoming new people with an "Everyting is okay" sign in a very neutral color.

They are certainly keeping things moving forward. There was really no significant plot eleme take that could arise from the Brainy Bunch going down the philosophical path we already treaded so they just skip forward 6 months and move the needle again into Terra incognita.
As fun as the Michael and Janet show is, they really did need to reconnect them with the others and them revealing what and who they are is the natural extension to that as well as effectively completing this 'reboot'.

that would be kinda racially unsettling
that would mean the "real" good place sent a black? ethnic for chidi to hook up w/, basically what would be his soul mate in the "real" good place
and previously
the bad place sent pakistani ethnic fake elenor for chidi to hook up w/
hope this theory is wrong and simone is just a really good person and seemingly a "real" good place candidate.

Ya, a good person could just be a good person. Not sure how the door reveal will play out, though. If they all go through the door "alive", then Simone being from the Good Place could be a way to avoid the Bad Place, although they would have to work around the whole pissed off Judge thing lol
