Daybreak could be rich if they were not so greedy (and lazy).
I hope they lose it all and the community wins.
I hate to break it to you, but that's not how copyright works. This is about as close to a textbook case of copyright infringement as it gets. They have the THJ devs by the balls at this point, and can crush them if they want. Best case scenario would be another p99 situation, where they have to fork over any "donations" they got, and can limp along as a passion project that makes $0.

Yeah I agree. I liked THJ but there’s no way they’re winning this unscathed. They’re going to have to disclaim how much they made and fork it over.

Business is business but they should probably thank THJ and maybe even hire some of them because they've breathed more life into the game than they have in a long time. There is probably a higher road where both sides could win from this but I'm sure that's no goal of Daybreaks.

The community could rally for THJ, but Daybreak’s track record shows they value IP control over fan support. It’s likely a lost cause.

Can someone give the tldr?
Game let you "multiclass"/combine 3 different EQ classes, keeping all their abilities, spells, and AAs. Additionally, items could be "leveled" up to LEGENDARY status, which gave them massive stat boosts, heroic stats, etc. depending on the piece of gear in question.

This + some server tweaks allowed you to solo most raiding content with all the extra power. A "dad" server, if you will.

Wait so one character could have abilities of 3 classes with no limits?

In effect, yeah. You could stack Warrior AAs with Monk AAs type of stuff. Skill caps used the highest for whichever of the 3 classes you chose had the highest skill cap in said skill. So if you chose MNK/WAR/PAL, you'd mostly be using WAR skill caps for defense, MNK would get you a higher 2HB cap, block skill, etc.

What made THJ so fun?

Can someone give the tldr?
  • Multiclassing: Players can combine three classes (e.g., Necromancer/Paladin/Druid or Warrior/Cleric/Enchanter), accessing all spells, abilities, and AAs from each. With 560 possible combinations, this allows creative, powerful builds like a "holy blender" (Warrior/Paladin/Rogue) or pet-heavy setups (Necromancer/Magician/Beastlord)
    for 3 pets at once.
  • Solo-Friendly Design: Rebalanced for solo or duo play, THJ lets one character function as a strong group, tackling dungeons and bosses without needing multiple accounts or bots. Enemies are slightly easier, but raids and high-level bosses (e.g., Nagafen, Vox) remain challenging, offering rewarding progression.
  • Engaging Progression System: Expansions unlock by defeating key raid bosses or collecting rare items, adding a sense of achievement. Upgradable gear (Enchanted/Legendary versions) and immediate access to role-defining AAs (e.g., Rogue’s Chaotic Stab and SoS at level 1) make every level feel impactful.
  • Community: With thousands of players, a friendly atmosphere, and active Discord support, THJ fosters camaraderie. Admins are responsive, and the server’s popularity (e.g., 3,000 players reported)
  • No multi comp: With the soloability of most combinations are quite active - many AA's available early if you want to farm AA's at lvl 30. Also many AA's retuned to be shorted cooldowns for a more active playstyle for most compositions.
  • Quality of life improvements: Bazaar is a central hub with easy access. No death penalty (non HC), server wide buffs, buffs never need to be refreshed, etc etc.
  • Gear: Very little is no-drop or lore. And most of it is equipable at level 1. Also with the class combos you get a wide selection. Also all gear can drop as enchated or legendary with enhanced stats. Further, you can combine or evolve gear manually till you get to legendary.

A smart company would've used the massive surge in popularity and publicity to their advantage and come out with a creative new TLP (while also still keeping the lawsuit on the backburner).

Instead, they release Fangbanger...
This is the company whose response to THJ was Fangbreaker.

4d chess thinking was that they released a server that becomes a worse Oakwynd right around the same time the next TLP comes out, and that one would have been the THJ collab server.

Nope they're just that dumb.

Worse, they likely blame the lack of success on THJ rather than their stupid TLP ruleset.

Rally all you want, but unless that amounts to $$$ into DBG's pockets, and not $$$ into THJ's pockets, expect to be disappointed. Copyright is 100% about controlling the $$$ derived from an IP. If THJ hadn't solicited donations they would probably have been left alone, but they did, and now their future is in DGB's hands. They are going to be taken to the cleaners for any $$$ they took in + DBG's legal fees at the minimum if DBG wants to send a message. If the THJ crew can work out a deal to make them more money than that, they might be able to get a license like P99.

I cancelled my daybreak accounts. Its the least I can do.
If nothing else - I want them to stop sucking so much. The crux of all of this is multi boxing imo. Whales with multiple accounts represents a large portion of their revenue and I think that model is shit.

There are a few features of THJ (and other servers like Chainbreakers, etc) that really should make their way to TLPs:

Respawning Instances: Most zones had an NPC similar to the Agent of Change that would let you create a personal respawning or non-respawning instance. Respawning instances were just the normal zone as an instance, non-respawning contained raid bosses. The ability to fire up a 'personal' pick of a zone is great and way better for solving competition issues vs encounter locking. PLers already do this by just zoning in a ton of accounts to force spawn a new pick for themselves. We've done it with our guild as well (spawn extra picks for an angry goblin, etc). Just make that part of the base game.

Track on Map: Tracking gives you MQ/SEQ style map tracking directly in the in game map. No third part tools required. I agree with Secrets on this (not sure if their position has evolved), but you can reduce a lot of third party usage by bringing over the main QoL stuff that 'everyone' uses them for.

Merchant Bags: Big bags that you can use to autosell everything (or all but one) quickly at the merchant. You can sort of do this now by just selecting the bag at the vendor, but the 'leave one' style of filtering is not available and is super useful.

AAs before 51: Having the ability to grind out certain useful AAs while 'paused' at different levels while leveling changes up the mindless slog to 60. The reworking of AA levels and cooldowns was also consistently an improvement.

Would be nice if DBG had a better relationship with the EMU community. There are a lot of 'good ideas' out there and since DBG seems to be too poor to pay living wages for their staff, you'd think they'd be happy to engage the community for low cost ideas. These community devs love the game and dedicate a ton of their free time to making cool shit for the EQ community.

DBG lets cheaters, multiboxers (on truebox lol), PLers, RMT run rampant in a way that can only be seen as encouraging it. There is not a single boxer holding to the 'two box rule' on Fangbreaker because it was immediately obvious no one cared. Instead they mute people on discord for complaining or bringing things up. TLP season should be a time for trying out cool new MMO ideas using a nostalgia driven content base. Instead they shit out low effort, rehashed, uninspired TLP rulesets each year. The new Live EQ expansions killer feature is a clicky keychain? lol

DBG is not a good steward of the Everquest IP.

I was gonna say if FoH is showing up in the court documents, we've got someone from Daybreak here somewhere. Might as well try and give them the feedback they so desperately need. In a perfect world a court could compare the services of Daybreak and THJ, and then be able to rule in THJ's favor since Daybreak has been absolute ass for all the reasons xmod2 just listed.

If these 2 dudes were really making 100k a month off thj for like 6 months then they should just buy the eq ip from daybreak. They've only got what, 3k subs left playing the real game? 5k? I doubt they make enough to pay for more than a skeleton crew to keep the lights on the ip is worth what, 200k at most, just buy it and keep the money train going.

Ppl acting like they still going up against Sony or something. A couple of autists convinced a nerd with some money to buy eq I'm sure that guy would love to get out from under this.
