I always took it for granted that we spy on our allies and that they reciprocated in kind. Israel has been known to spy on us for years now. Our technology advantage just makes it far easier for us to spy on the rest of the world at a completely different level than they themselves are capable of. Snowden just pulled the lid back on the whole affair and now foreign leaders are having to engage in some public posturing as a result.

I agree that the notion that Congress and the President were in the dark on all of it is laughable.

Is it fair to say that :

i) Snowden is still 'leaking' information;

ii) Putins claim of only giving asylum to Snowden if he stopped harming America is suspect to say the least.

I thought Snowden had already given his information to journalists such as Greenwald, hence he had no problem"not leaking any more information". Ultimate loophole.

Feinstein promotes bill to strengthen NSA's hand on warrantless searches | World news | theguardian.com
A Senate bill promoted as a surveillance reform would codify the ability of the National Security Agency to search its troves of foreign phone and email communications for Americans' information, and permit law enforcement agencies to search the vast databases as well.

The Fisa Improvements Act, promoted by Dianne Feinstein, the California Democrat who chairs the Senate intelligence committee, would both make permanent a loophole permitting the NSA to search for Americans' identifying information without a warrant - and, civil libertarians fear, contains an ambiguity that might allow the FBI, the DEA and other law enforcement agencies to do the same thing.

"For the first time, the statute would explicitly allow the government to proactively search through the NSA data troves of information without a warrant," said Michelle Richardson, the surveillance lobbyist for the ACLU.

"It may also expand current practices by allowing law enforcement to directly access US person information that was nominally collected for foreign intelligence purposes. This fourth amendment back door needs to be closed, not written into stone."

The problem isn't that everyone is spying on everyone else, as you say everyone has been doing it forever. The problem is getting caught. Only amateurs in the spy game get caught and when they do they get pummeled by the rest of the players for being fools. And the president gets blamed for it because it happened on his watch.

It's embarrassing more than anything else, but nobody wants to be seen running around in their underwear.

Information was confirmed yesterday that the NSA has spied on phonecalls in Norway. In a months period they recorded 33 million calls. Entire population here is only 5 million, including babies and elderly. Not even remotely targeted, just.... everything and everyone.

As to that list of 72 potential terrorist mindsets. What the hell? That is indeed close to everyone.

Should be 73 including, "People who have the slightest problem with any of the 72 prior mindsets". The NSA are half-assing this if everyone isn't on the list.

Gotta figure out how to credibly put babies on there too. They'll be the vanguard in terrorism when everyone else is under watch.
