I mean I can't quote anything from that movie, but I've seen all of them and enjoyed them all. I can probably quote more lines from gangs of New York having probably seen it the most. I even saw it in the theater back in college. It's such a great movie.

Aside from all of the other reasons we think this will be a piece of shit, let's not forget the whole "they didn't have orchestras back then" bullshit. What are the chances that a Christopher Nolan movie has an amazing fucking soundtrack without an orchestra? I mean, it might be decent and we might not really notice its lack unless we are looking for it, but one thing about Nolan's movies is that they were almost universally recognized for having standout soundtracks that you can't help but notice. Fuck, Inception literally rewrote movie trailer sounds with the "BWOOOOONG" sound.

Can a movie have good music without an orchestra? Absolutely. Can an epic mythological tale with a massive budget, special effects, action set pieces, etc. have "holy shit" level music without an orchestra? I'm skeptical to say the least.
Greek music is actually very interesting and Hans Zimmer is good enough to make that work. Thats not going to be what they go with tho.

I hope the doesn’t bomb, because if it does, it’ll be one more reason not to make historical epics. My interest declines each time it pops up in the news. It did get me to reread Homer at least. I finished the Iliad last week and started the Odyssey this week.

I don’t think there’s a faithfully accurate l historical epic out there, but I still love them. Well, maybe Apocalypto, but an Odyssey with a full Greek cast, period accurate costumes and dialogue in classical Greek, directed by the arch bigot himself is probably too much to ask for.
If it makes money, then they will take that as vindication to make more DEI checklist trash in the future. Ask any decent trekkie if they would rather have no trek vs Kurtzman Trek and they prefer the past trek to remain untainted. Same thing with Star Wars or a lot of other IPs. Sometimes its better to let it die than to validate the reductive Made For Netflix shit.

Give me an anime version of The Odyssey where it turns out the Greek pantheon are actually hyper-advanced alien spacecraft who have effectively enslaved mankind. Odysseus is joined by Jason and the crew of the Argo as they set sail to fight for the freedom of humanity. The part 1 finale is Orion using a bow made by Hephaestus (who is all that remains of the 'gods' who rebelled against Zeus) to fire his soul into orbit to destroy the Athena weapon platform that was protecting the final approach to Olympus.

Would be less disrespectful to the original works than whatever this is shaping up to be.

Christopher Nolan explained that he cast rapper Travis Scott as a bard in his upcoming adaptation of The Odyssey. He views rap as the modern equivalent of ancient oral poetry—a performance art using rhythm and spoken word to preserve history and pass stories down through generations before they were ever written.

The Bard's Role: Scott plays a traveling storyteller in the film, allowing Nolan to nod toward ancient Greek performers who historically sang or recited their epic poems aloud.

The Sonic Landscape: Instead of using a traditional, historically inaccurate orchestra, Nolan is grounding the film's auditory experience with these oral poetry and musical elements.

You're getting rap music.

Remember when they made a watchmen sequel series that started halfway decent, then they strangely wouldn’t show “white” Dr Manhattan on screen but then gladly showed “black” Dr Manhattan all you can take at the end. While trying to convince us that the atomic man that chased hot white jailbait was gonna go after a very below average black woman?

Almost anyone I see defending this defended that.

Hate his fucking politics, but anyone trying to argue he hasn't been in some bangers, or that they're unfamiliar with them, is lying, a retard, or both.

Gotta doubt the masculinity of any man that can't quote multiple lines from The Departed! Next you're going to say you have never seen Gangs of New York, Casino, or Goodfellas.
I have the dumbest quote from departeded I think of the most.

Martin Sheen saying " microprocessors" in his Boston accent. I'd say it out loud like an autistic when looting them in Arc Raiders.

For gangs it's "Whoopsie daisy"

Goodfellas shinebox

Does casino really have any bangin quick lines? A lotta holes in the desert?

This reminds me of that Aeon Flux version of Alexander.

I was mostly talking about The Departed, with a few scenes like the Cranberry one above and Wahlberg's theory on FEDs... but yeah, almost all of Scorsese's crime movies have multiple good quote excerpts. The Casino memorable lines are mostly longer monologues though.

Some of the shorter ones from Casino:
All while doing your best Pesci impression:
"You called my friend a faggot?!? You told him to go fuck himself??"
"You took your boots off?? You put your feet on the table?? You shit-kicking, stinky, horse-manure-smellin' motherfucker you. You fuck me up over there, I'll stick you in a hole in the fuckin' desert"
"Don't make me be a bad guy"
The scene that plays out the most in my mind is probably the "Look, why take a chance?" because it can be applicable to mundane day-to-day life, not just why Andy Stone needed to die.

Or maybe just watch the 1997 miniseries? I mean at least the acting is pretty solid in it, and overall will remain as the better adaptation of the saga.

Terrible argument. Almost no one reads these classics today anyway so drumming up interest by disrespecting the source doesn’t seem like a winning formula and doesn’t seem to affect making them since The Return is just two years old.

No one expects perfection or complete accuracy, especially from modern Hollywood. I don’t think it’s too hard to meet the minor expectations though. Get some really easy basics right and we’ll try to have faith. Help us imagine the story. Build an incredible variation. Help people want to read these epics.

Having a female play the greatest warrior in their history and having one of the ugliest black women alive play the most beautiful white woman of her time, who started a war that destroyed a nation….seems really disrespectful to the story. Why would anyone trust the important elements if they can’t do the easy stuff?

Your argument seems to be; it looks like a shit sandwich but they won’t feed us shit anymore if we don’t eat it with vigor! That’s perfectly fine by me. Sell that shit somewhere else. I want Homers Odyssey reimagined. Chris Nolan wants a DEI inspired award. Two different goals. I won’t pay for his.
