Second season was a definite step up from the first. They found a much better balance between drama and comedy, and several episodes felt like I was watching Trek again. Bortas had many great moments, and Mercer is no longer the weak point of the show.

I picked the show up recently after hearing it positively compared to Trek recently. I'd watched the first episode a couple years ago but it didn't hook me at the time.
Overall it does remind me of TNG but unfortunately TNG as it was 25-years ago. Unfortunately its still largely a random grab bag of single episodes with minimal an overarching story. Also like many shows the episodes frequently use out of character behaviour, behaviour that doesn't follow the premise and logical flaws to advance the plot.
Its not that the show is bad, its just that it feels like we should be quite a bit past this in terms of writing shows given what we saw from Battlestar (despite its flaws) 15-years ago as well as a number of other shows over the intervening years.
