I think had it been done differently the show could have gone on for a few more seasons, I liked Doggett and Reyes, they just needed to have a conclusion to the Mulder storyline which it seems they were unwilling to do.

One of my personal favorites was the Jersey Devil episode, we had a house in Long beach island and we'd always drive through the pine barrens.

I think around the time of the 2nd film, Carter and Spotnitz were pitching a new x-files show but it didn't go anywhere

Some good comments in this thread already. I do recommend doing the Mythology approach I listed in the OP unless you're a die hard fan. It makes the story much more accessible. Don't forget to watch the first film at the correct time (between series 4 and 5 iirc). There is very little you lose out from doing this and then going back to watching interesting MotW episodes.

With regards to the main story, it is pretty good right up until the time when the Syndicate (the elite council) are murdered by the faceless aliens. After that you sense that they have no idea what direction to take any more, and one even gets the impression that they start retconning to imply that it was all a government black-ops program from the start and there never were any aliens. The series finale was utter crap and made very little sense. As I mentioned, series 8 and 9 are very much lacking, at least from a storytelling point of view. I do have to hand it to them though that Dogget's character, and to some extent Monica's were well made, but they lacked two important aspects: Firstly, good stories, and secondly, they weren't Mulder and Scully.

With regards to the films, the first film was very good and fit in really well with the main story. The second film, well... I didn't dislike it, but it was basically just an extended MotW episode. Personally, I am not a fan of them making any further X-Files shows or films, at least not with Mulder and Scully. If they do, they should do something similar to Millennium or The Lone Gunmen and create something in the same universe.

Finally, the cigarette smoking man is probably one of my favourite "villains" of all time. The show mentioned above, Confessions of a Cigarette Smoking Man, is awesome (apart from assassinating JFK from a storm drain!). Some trivia: The Cigarette Smoking Man is loosely based onE. Howard Huntof Watergate fame.

I hated the second movie. Aside from it being so stand alone, I got real irritated at how they had to hand hold the audience through Mulder and Scully's past. Is anyone actually watching that movie that isn't a fan of the show? The conversation they have about their son is what I remember standing out as especially eye roll.

I love the series and I loved the first movie. I can even tolerate the last two seasons. The finale and the second movie were both awful though.

The X-Files Officially Returning To Television | Comicbook.com
Fox Television is officially reviving The X-Files for a six-episode limited series. The official announcement follows frequently reoccurring rumors over recent weeks and months.

Series creator Christ Carter will return for the series, along with principal actors David Duchovney as FBI Agent Fox Mulder and Gillian Andersen as Agent Dana Scully. The new series comes thirteen years after the original, Emmy-winning series went off the air.

?I think of it as a 13-year commercial break,? said Carter in a press release. ?The good news is the world has only gotten that much stranger, a perfect time to tell these six stories.?

?We had the privilege of working with Chris on all nine seasons of The X-Files ? one of the most rewarding creative experiences of our careers ? and we couldn?t be more excited to explore that incredible world with him again,? added Dana Walden and Gary Newman, Chairmen and CEOs of Fox Television Group. ?The X-Files was not only a seminal show for both the studio and the network, it was a worldwide phenomenon that shaped pop culture ? yet remained a true gem for the legions of fans who embraced it from the beginning. Few shows on television have drawn such dedicated fans as The X-Files, and we?re ecstatic to give them the next thrilling chapter of Mulder and Scully they?ve been waiting for.?

The X-Files originally premiered in September 1993. Over the course of its nine-season run, the influential series grew from sci-fi cult favorite to mainstream hit. The show, which earned 16 Emmy Awards, five Golden Globes and a Peabody Award, follows FBI special agents Scully (Anderson) and Mulder (Duchovny) as they investigate unexplained cases ? ?X-Files? ? for which the only answers involve paranormal phenomena.

Two X-Files movies followed, but fans have longed to see Mulder and Scully return to television. They?re finally getting their wish, if only for six episodes. No further details on the series? plot have been revealed at this time.

I'm pretty much the only one that liked the last movie. Was very Sherlock Holmesish.

I'm good with them making more, those two are a great duo.

I think the second movie would have been better if it was advertised more appropriately. They made it look like it was going to be paranormal but it wasn't at all. Just mismatching expectations. It isn't a bad movie.

Disagree completely guys. Hate hate hated the last movie. I can't even put into words how bad I thought it was. It was like a long, shitty normal episode of the show. Like the ones you skip past when binge watching.

The worst part was how hamfisted they had to be with all the random dialogue references to key events from the show. Like anyone going to see that movie didn't watch the series. And I totally needed Mulder and Scully's lost son to come in casual conversation between the two of them.

I liked the last movie. It was the typical monster of the week type X-Files episode in movie form.

i'd honestly rather see an x-files reboot with solid plot points spanning multiple seasons and new actors than 55 year old mulder and scully investigate the case of the missing viagra pills. without the alien over-arc its not as interesting to watch, but the aliens plot is silly to try and retrofit to the spaghetti they made over the course of the show and do anything with in just 6 episodes. It'll probably just be 6 monster of the week (weak) episodes.

If they do new actors there's really no point doing X files anymore. They would be just riding off the I.P. at that point. IMHO I think older actors are better for the Crime Noirish/ Creature detective stuff they could do with the series going forward

What I really want to see is a reboot of the Friday 13th show. That was interesting as fuck with all the artifacts

Yeah, I think a lot of the negativity came from the fact that people wanted a movie that would continue the X-files storyline rather than something that was more self-contained. Personally, I liked it, but then I tended to prefer the monster-of-the-week episodes.

I could see it working if they did something like make Mulder the new AD Skinner, overseeing a team of new investigators, but I can't really see David Duchovny going for what would be more of a background role.

I am happy to see them doing new episodes with the original cast. I think a new show would be okay if they found the right two actors that had good chemistry. I liked both movies but was a bit disappointed in the second film due to my absurdly high expectations. I read the comic series that is on going as well.

I am also a huge fan of the Friday the 13th show and would love for that to come back.

Pretty excited for this and to those looking for more detail to what happened after season nine, IDW put out Season 10 of X-Files as a comic series and Carter did the overall story arc, so it's canon. Was well worth a read.

I always felt that Supernatural, at first, was sort of a spiritual successor to Friday the 13th. No pun intended. Except when it became the apocalypse or bust in later seasons, it had a lot in common.

When they do plan on airing this? in 2016? I'm going to have to find some time to watch all the seasons again. I quit watching the show due to EQ hogging up every waking minute of my time so I never finished the show when it first aired.

FYI, Netflix is now streaming about 23 episodes in HD now. They seem to be adding episodes in HD little by little. Blu-Ray releases can't be far behind.
