My point isn't that making games with badazz graphix is bad. My point is that, with MMO's, limiting your user base, from the get go, by implementing systems only accessible by a minority of gamers is pretty short-sighted. If you want to create a game and market it to your niche super-computer players, so be it, but it won't be a WoW killer.
No its not. The trick is to design for both. Scalable system that can be both played on Jonnys 2004 $600 Dell, but also on my 2011 $1500 system with all the bells and whistles turned on so it looks like RL. That is the beauty of the PC market, your game should be for both people.

If I recall correctly Rift had something like this and SWTOR as well. I know that SWTOR could be both played in DX9 or DX11 or some shit.

Just started playing a bard, it's actually pretty fun. Are you able to level through mostly dungeons/camping? I'm feeling pretty burnt out on "go to the next quest hub" MMOs. I really want to play something like old school EQ where you can just camp a spot with some buddies.

Can you give an example of what the vet rewards are? I'm sure I have some on my account, but I don't want to re-install just to check.
I got an 8, 12, 10, 6, 14, 16 month reward box, most are an xp potion, a set of house furniture, a title, and some fireworks.

There's also a one character only bag and horseshoes that improve mount speed.

I think I may login to see what I can do with my crafter still on a free account. I don't know what it was in this game, but it's the one and only game where I had loads of fun RPing a crafter. It was basically all I did most of the day, I still have like 10 boats from when I was making cash hand over fist.

If anyone wants to tool around in VT or GS let me know, I tanked in Greystone last night and it went pretty well actually. I'm in Ethereal Realms which my buddy is still running even though it's completely empty, so if anyone needs a tag for buffs and such let me know.

Surprisingly, I'm having a lot of fun with this game. I've leveled a bard to 14, but it's been mostly solo. Are all of the continents as dead as Kojan?

Thestra and Qalia were pretty busy yesterday for me. There is SO much to do in this game, lots of interesting items and quest chains and I forgot how much fun the crafting was. I finally hit 37 on my warrior so time to make some striking shortswords for myself. I have TONS of lower lvl mats including rares that I won't be using probably, so if anyone needs lower lvl (1-30) weapons or just miscellaneous blacksmith items like horseshoes etc hit me Lemywinks. I can also make T4 (initiate) rare weapons as I have the upgrade recipe, but that I'd have to charge for since the mats are expensive and I be poor.

How does one go about making some money while leveling? I'm about ~20ish and only have about 3 gold, is that about right?

Since I have a bit of free time and never delved too deep, I'm trying this again. My 14 Warrior (Hedley) or 8 rogue (Kyojitsu) would love a few good weapons.

Kojan does feel fairly dead, although the people online are very helpful. This game definitely has more of an EQ vibe than TOR or GW2 and a lot more of a sandbox feel, although it is a bit rough around the edges. The stuttering isn't too bad, but kind of odd given I have a pretty good PC.

One option is to deconstruct all the Shandrel items you get and sell the Rares on the broker. It used to be ok money and probably still is.

I'll see what I can make for you, too bad I just sold a lowbie sword of striking and now I'm out of that dust. Crafted goods/rares and even general mats still sell well on the broker. I slapped on 5 stacks of pyrite ore up there last night for 1gp each and they were gone pretty quick. You can sell T3/T4 UR weapons for 1 plat a piece still apparently and the UR materials are still selling for 20-35gp a pop.

I think as said above, your best bet is to sell mats. You can even just get your harvesting up and focus on T3/T4 wood/ore and sell it for a ton. There are plenty of areas to harvest that you don't need the coinciding adventuring level. You can also go the crafting route, although I don't know if the market is as bustling as it was when I did it. I had made like 5 plat by the time I was lvl 15 or so because I was crafting T3/T4 and made a killing on the diplo wands.

Thanks for the info.

My Warrior is sweating through killing solo and duo pairs of 2 dots.. Next to me is a Disciple mowing through things at 4 times my speed, and a Psionicist going even faster. Does this trend of Warrior solo suckiness continue? Is the rogue any better?

What classes are good at endgame and can solo decently 1-50?

Basically every class is welcome at endgame. Exceptional good soloers are Disciples and DKs.

Warrior is the worst class to solo with and Rogue is at best ok solo.

Yeah as a 37 warrior, I can solo SOME 3 dots, the 2 dots are usually a breeze though. That said, tanks seem awfully rare and if I want to group it's usually easy to find one. I can even group for dungeons above my payscale sometimes since we're so rare (seemingly). This game is more fun group content over solo anyway and if you need help on certain quests the community is usually very friendly and happy to help.

Now I just upgraded my weapons by 20 DPS each, which is a rather big upgrade so maybe now the 3 dots will be a lot easier and what I said above may be inaccurate. I'm just too busy crafting to test it out yet

Touring Telon: Six years of Vanguard

Few MMO gamers can forget the legendary bad launch of Vanguard and the drama that surrounded its development. Even fewer MMO gamers can remember what the game was like, as the population started small and stayed small. For a half-decade, the title wallowed in relative obscurity compared to the rest of SOE's lineup, and in fact, many predicted that it would be canned.

As we know now, SOE decided to go a different way. The studio threw its faith behind Vanguard last year by relaunching it as a free-to-play MMO and giving it an actual development team once more. While Vanguard isn't in the league of major sluggers in the industry, the title is now thriving and seeing a renaissance that players new and old are enjoying.

To celebrate Vanguard's 6th anniversary, we got on the phone with Producer Harvey Burgess and Game Designer Corey LeFever to take a brief tour around the latest content in the game and to talk about the road from F2P to the future.

Free Telon forever!

According to the devs, Vanguard has had many strengths that were under-appreciated historically. The game's open world is vast, beckoning to the explorer to check out every crag and valley. Vanguard is deliciously old-school, with non-instanced dungeons and a reliance on group content. But above all of these factors, Burgess said, the community proved to be one of the most helpful and welcoming in the genre.

Taking the game to free-to-play meant that there would be an influx of first-time visitors to Telon, and the devs wanted to make sure that this initial impression would be the best it could be. One of the first tasks the new team undertook was to revamp the central Isle of Dawn, a beginner area that would shoulder the burden of explaining the mechanics of Vanguard and its three "spheres:" adventuring, diplomacy, and crafting. The title's other 15 starter areas (one per race) were boiled down to one per continent to facilitate early grouping.

Next stop on the F2P tour? Bug fixes, and lots of them. The devs admitted that many of them were much newer to the game than the players who had been there for five years, so the team went to the community for suggestions as to what needed fixing first. Vanguard certainly didn't launch in a polished state, but the team wanted to make sure that it would finally make strides toward being all-around better.

Once the bug fixes went in, the next focus was on tuning classes. LeFever said that Druids were first in line for this treatment, but the rest of the classes would eventually get their turn. The entire team, he said, plays Vanguard regularly and contributes to the feedback that is making it more polished.

All of this work paid off handsomely. Vanguard's F2P launch and its subsequent debut on Steam was a "boon" to the game's population, according to the devs.

The stick and the carrot

There was one big problem with Vanguard's new free-to-play approach: restrictions. Namely, there were too many of them, and they were turning potential players away. F2P characters were restricted to certain races, certain classes, denied housing, and had a smaller in-game wallet.

After listening to the community, doing internal playtests, and sampling the game themselves, the developers decided that this needed to change. SOE authorized a less-restrictive Vanguard F2P model that switched from the stick (penalizing players for not subscribing) to the carrot (rewarding players who did subscribe).

City of Brass opens for business

City of Brass, a high-level zone with an Arabian theme, had been in the making for a long, long time. With F2P and an increase in staff, the Vanguard team finally had the resources to create new art and finish designing the area. Last November, experienced adventurers were able to check out the first new zone added to the game in just about forever, tackling tough group challenges under a swirling sky of fire and doom.

City of Brass introduced thousands of new items and expanded upon the story of the nasty Effriti and their attempt to wreak havoc upon the world. The zone has plenty of new bosses and culminates in a tricky 12-person raid.

Having an all-new and unique experience in the game was important to the devs, because they felt that the players hadn't seen much in the way of new content for years now. It was also a signal: Vanguard was growing, so don't count it down and out just yet.

Celebrating six years

As we write this, Vanguard's anniversary event is already up and running. Players can talk to the Historian of Telon for a goodie box full of surprises and go on a few missions for the Winter Court faeries. In addition to the usual anniversary activities, SOE is giving all players a special chest for their house tomorrow.

So what comes next for Vanguard and its intrepid development team? The devs say that they're committed to releasing a weekly or bi-weekly patch that could be as small as a couple bug fixes to as large as a new zone or overhauled area. There was a lot of talk of continuing to polish the UI, creating new raids, and adding crafting recipes for the City of Brass. Diplomacy fans, don't fret; love is coming your way as well.

It used to be that celebrating six years for Vanguard would have signaled a lucky break for the struggling game to have survived that long. Now it's a genuine party to toast the accomplishments of the previous year and the anticipation of the coming one.

I'm kind of getting an EQ feel from this game. It has actually gotten me to subscribe... I came in with really low expectations and am pretty happy. I really wish the game had more people playing. Just moved from Kojan to Thestra and the population is better, but I still haven't grouped yet.

Pilforgod, if you have anything that a 14-15 bard could use I would really appreciate it. Name is Powl in game.

You should be able to find a group relatively easily in Khedgor's End, it's on Thestra and pretty fun, good from about 14-19ish or so.

I don't know how accurate/informed all of the info is, but I usedthis forum post guidewhen I was starting up a few weeks ago and found it pretty informative for basics on the classes and where to go for leveling (at least up to the 20s).
