They didn't even try with VG. They let it sit there and fester for years. Just look at FFXIV and what they did. There is your proof that if you fix shit, then relaunch it, people will come. Maybe not as many as with FF, because of the name, but they sure could of got more.
That's because Square Enix's entire future hinged on the success of FFXIV. If they didn't get something out of it, it would be pretty bad for them. SOE bought up Vanguard as it was dying and invested much less. It would never become a flagship game like EverQuest or Final Fantasy, so why bother?

Doesn't seem like the wisest investment to buy a shitty product and pour your resources into it, instead of just making a good product from the start.

I'm not surprised that SOE is not selling Vanguard; I'm more surprised they are letting assets and code be lost forever. You can bet your ass they'll do the same bullshit to EQ1.

I'm shocked anyone actually thinks companies will just sell their shit to anyone offering a $20 bill.
Yeah the posting in here is way out of perspective. You guys should be thanking Sony. They bought this piece of trash game and kept it alive for WAYYYYYY longer than it should've been kept alive. Where do you think this pile of rubble would be if Sony hadn't saved Brad's ass and bought it? I'll give you one guess, and it sure as fuck doesn't include having a "new engine", or "robust population". If anything I think it was a courtesy to Brad from Smed in that it saved him from having "Vanguard had the shortest lifespan of any MMORPG in existence and was shut down permanently after a few months...." added to his Wikipedia.

Without SOE it would never have been released. The people complaining should be thankful to Sony for wasting as much money as they did for as long as they did.

I had lots of fun in VG over the years. I was kinda shocked they let VG run that long. Population was a joke for a long long time already.

The community was awsome and I wish, that everyone will find a new home somewhere else.

As long as Smed is running the place, count on it.
The guy has to run a business. I really don't get the hatred for Smed. Of course he has made some huge blunders, but I doubt he ever really wants to kill any game off.

No personal hate for the guy. Just for his business decisions. Any other business and he'd have been fired for EQ2 debacle or SWG or letting the number one MMO in 2001 go to number 4 or 5 by 2007 (or whenever it was).... But maybe he gets lucky with EQN and is back on top.

Stopped clock is right twice, and etc.

The fuck you say....may they burn in the internal pits of hell for this.

So i started last week as a minor filler and fell back in love with the game even with all its flaws. I setup my 3 box accounts, subbed for 3 months each, spent another 100 on SC to get some flying mounts, unbinds, skele keys etc. I pull 2 up all nighters and lvl 2 new characters 1-50 for extra buffs, just finished my complete POTA tier 3 armor set, and got my 5th total main character to 55 who was 32 to start the week since i needed a tank for my 3 box plans. Lined up a raid spot with some old school pals from back in the day so I was back in raiding action with a guild clearing basically all content but the unbeaten new boss....life was good my friends, life was fucking good.

Sad face, seriously. But I definitely can't blame them. Its just sad because VG was the best game i've played in 15 years of my MMO career even with all its blaring flaws. The class diversity and uniqueness that allowed for very specific roles yet not a complete defined holy trinity was just amazing. Long epic quest lines not just at the end of the game but on the journey that had truly ass beat rewards that made it worth it was great and not been replicated before or since. There is alot of bad things with parts of the game but it was still awesome. Raid fights were diverse enough without everything just being a get out of fire type mechanic. I was in one of the top guilds when APW was out and that was some of the funniest raiding i've had. So many things you had to do as a raid and individual to maximize your potential; hell there was only 5 of us guilds that had Kota killed for months on months which is how I like it.

But alas, i'm part of a niche market that unfortunately doesn't help generate large revenue streams and this is a business afterall. I just wish they would try a 3rd option, make a premium priced game that is like 50 dollars a month but truly delivered the experience that I know most of us who have the means would gladly pay to play.

I'm going to go fly my dragon to the dark elf city one last time and then uninstall. I backed Pantheon for $250 for shits just incase but I guess I should have stayed in MMO retirement like I was planning for the next 1-2 years. The universe is trying to tell me something! Sadly i'd already be downloading FFXIV to go back to that since i have a huge MMO itch right now but i sold my damn black mage for 800 dollars just so i wouldn't return. Doh! Still had a 2 box warrior...but meh.
How can you say new mmo's are "kiddie day-care, loot pi?ata" fests and then detail everything you just did in vanguard in the space of a few days and a few hundred dollars, which are not things achievable in current mmo's like wow, ff, gw2 etc without more time and effort?

What, wows not pay to win and that is what pisses you off?

Help me out here, because you sound very contradictory.

Minecraft has sold over 33 million across all platforms placing it in the top 5 best selling games of all time. Vanguard is probably lucky if it has 1000 active players so yeah, sorry about your game bro.
