I wanted to start a general thread for the topic geared towards self improvement. After being an atheist for about 15 years I've recently come to believe in a God after taking a dive into consciousness, UFO's, and the extent we've been lied to about everything but at this point I probably have less spirituality than a common field rock.

What I've started doing recently is a combination of prayer and then a short(5-10 minute) period of mediation afterwards. The idea is the use the prayer for two things mainly. The first is areas of self improvement I want to improve and the second is gratitude for anything but I've mainly been focused on my family and friends. The general idea is to ask for guidance, give gratitude, and then calm your mind and listen in meditation.

For the self improvement part of the prayer I typically don't ask for anything but state the changes I intend to make. For example, "I intend to treat my family and everyone I interact with love and respect. I intend to live my life with honesty and integrity" and then ask for support and guidance in making the changes. I think this approach works for me because it acknowledges at I still have the responsibility to make the changes. For the gratitude part I'll take a family member, my wife for instance, and spend 5-10 minutes giving heartfelt, sincere gratitude for all the things i love about her. You can give gratitude for anything though, pets, friends, jobs, cars. In a pretty short time this has made a huge difference in my marriage and the general happiness I have in my life. Over the course of long relationships I have a bad tendency to dwell on the bad parts of my partner in a relationship and lose value of all the good things. This has helped.

I struggle the most with the meditation part. My minds been a mile a minute thinking about the price of beans in Yugoslavia since i can remember. I also run on coffee, chew, and weed after working hours so that doesnt help at all. I'm just gonna keep working at it and try to kick a habit or two. Might try Sam Harris' guided meditation app again. Anyone have any recommendations for guided meditation or any experiance with trying binural beats?

The above stuff im doing i feel is beneficial for mental health and healthy relationships even if im wrong and their is no God. I intend to try to meditate more and make it a daily routine. Over the last 10-15 years i know ive had a massive decrease in my attention span to the point that its getting difficult for me to sit down and focus on reading a book.

But we do need spiritual leaders. People who have studied the scriptures, the creeds, the catechisms, who have a broad understanding. No leadership is how we go down a rabbit hole that leads to everyone drinking the Kool-Aid. I'm glad you're getting your thoughts together. Keep praying!

A priest will tell you how Jesus loves trannies and fudge packers, and you should love them too because to do otherwise is to be a racist bigot Nazi.

I wish that was a joke, but it does serve as a good reminder that even religious institutions are just as susceptible to the moral and mental rot as anything else humans have built.

Islam is the only religion that has held its ground, and that's because they are totalitarians who enjoy making their own rainbows by throwing their degenerates off of roofs.

This thread is amazing.

And I love the Kool-Aid reference. Its the complete antithesis of what happened in Jonestown which spawned the reference.

Incredible stuff going on here.

I think people have gotten lost in this bullshit and have forgotten the main point. Go read the politics thread. Full of people that listen to spiritual leaders in there. If i thought Id ever think like them I'll go back to being a atheist.

So this is a spinoff of the worst thread on this forum?

What's next? You bump the Sheldon thread with rave reviews?

Maybe it was the word leaders that triggered you but what is wrong with sharing your journey and experiences with other humans? That's what we all do here, so if you are working through your own spiritual awakening what's the problem with seeking out other humans that have taken a similar path? That doesn't mean that you are looking for someone to "tell you how to think".

For me personally, when I rejected atheism I had to come to terms with the idea that the whole universe was not in fact, contained within my mind, maybe I didnt know nearly as much as I thought I did, and that there are people out there with more wisdom than I have. So why not try to find those people and listen to what they have to say?

yeah but then you get anabaptists and weird cults, it's a tradeoff, there is no perfect solution. Sometimes religious leaders would try to stop people from being fanatics

Do some of the habits you are trying to get rid of include coffee, chew, and weed? Because that is probably going a long way towards lowering your attention span. And probably fucking up your head a bit as well. A good friend of mine smoked weed for decades, and eventually he started thinking a lot of similar things (although in a completely different field). To the point where his wife and kids were worried and begged him to stop smoking weed. Slowly he did, and when he was done he wondered wtf he had been talking about all that time he was in the weed fog.

I'm not saying weed always causes this sort of thing, or that everyone will develop weird thoughts on weed, but it seems obvious that it *could*, so maybe give that a shot first and see how it goes? Maybe you'll still feel spiritual without all the chemicals raging through your brain, but it would probably be best to figure out if that is affecting it or not before proceeding any further.

Just my opinions, obviously. And I know you won't listen to anything I say because of the UFO thread, but at least I tried.

Yeah, those are the habits. Weed is a crutch for me that helps me relax at the end of the day and in general makes me be a kinder, more relaxed and loving husband. I understand it has alot of negatives and naturally, my tolerance, has increased over the years to the point that it is a net negative and I need to start taking steps to reign it into being a 2-3 times a weekend habit or eliminate it altogether. I quit smoking for 3-4 months this spring and started noticing myself being a prick way to much so I started again. Chew is just another crutch that is all negative that really effects my quality of sleep and lots of other things. Unfortunately I love chewing and its been tough for me to stay quit.
