Problem to me is consciousness. That doesn't get copied, so it'll never be a real way to cheat death.

It's said in the first season by someone (Theresa?) that the park means one thing to the guests, another to management, and something else to the stakeholders. Thinking it's just a fun play thing to the guests, a way to take over the world to management (by copying the consciousness of the most influential people in the world), and a path to immortality for the stakeholders (William).

cloning, digital copies, teleportation, etc is a fairly well explored idea at this point. ( in various sci fi, books, games, comics, movies, etc..)

Do you die when you fall asleep? your brain is constantly regrowing itself, copying, and regenerating.

teleporters like startrek. full on copy. with the original disintegrated at the same time. but... its possible for a copy to appear at one end, with the original to have not be destroyed..


generally, people accept the best way to rationalize it, is to hook oneself up to the computer. then have the computer running in synch with the biological brain. then... shut off the biological brain. this is basically what your brain is doing to itself constantly. the reality is of course, its largely just a psychological concept. This sych idea has no real bearing, vs a raw copy/paste.

Bernard doesn't need his own brain unless he's going to create more copies of himself. The data he's grabbing belongs to someone dead. Perhaps he's on a quest to revive his human self but I don't find it plausible.

In this case it's a simulation not a replication, but yeah. There's no consciousness that wouldn't be saved from a perfect copy of you/your brain unless you attribute consciousness to the extra-physical realm. We should understand old man Delos as being conscious, not programmed to feel as if he is conscious. Which brings us to the puzzle of Bernard – is he Ford's literal tool, programmed to seem conscious to everyone even himself, unknowingly carrying out the desires of his maker?

and yes, it should be noted, in stories like this, programming the A.I. is very overt. we always think the A.I. is just a robot, and can be reprogrammed, and often visually see just that, as here.

Organics can be programmed, and reprogrammed just as easy really. We have less direct understanding of that, sure. But you can absolutely get into human reprogramming with chemical cocktails, electro stimulation, light stimulation, psychological warfare, brainwashing, etc.

He could be. The puzzle of Bernard's consciousness is we don't know whether it's the case. He's wrestling with it himself – how "free" is he? Has the veil of his programming been lifted, or is he only seeing one extra layer to his existence that he was never aware of prior whilst many more layers remain beyond his ability to understand?

new theory! we are Ghost in the Shell. Major+Puppet master.
Beach Bernard is Arnold(who is the core stolen) merged with Bernard AI.

I sort of agree with the merging theory based solely on it explaining Bernard's "out of body" memories. The human portion is literally watching the old host's memories from the sideline since "he" wasn't the one who experienced it.
