I’m trying to enjoy it, despite the fact that I stand by my opinion that it’s filled with janky mechanics (things that haven’t changed since I played DS3) , and the game just wants to punish you, and seemingly rewards you for exploiting or “cheesing” it by beating encounters with unbalanced mechanics /overleveling/ picking up endgame gear and upgrading it the first chance you get, dropping a DOT on the boss and running around in a circle. Summoning ashes/mimic tears….I have gotten pretty good at convincing dragons, death rite birds and Night Calvary to fall off cliffs. Most of these victories don’t feel like you’re playing a game though.

The appeal is you pick up some fancy pokey thing, and it does something really cool, but the game when all is said and done comes down to positioning, if the boss is directly in front of you, you’re probably in trouble, if you’re to the side of the boss, under the boss, behind the boss, you’re probably good. For dungeons they try and find ways to ambush you so you panic roll into a wall/get stuck in a corner/fall of a cliff. Dying isn’t really a punishment, so they kinda just expect you to become ok with it, but no, I’ve played enough games, I don’t feel like dying over and over again until I just scrape by is fun, nor do I find it fun when I just demolish everything without any challenge, and there is rarely an inbetween, and the AI can vary so dramatically, even from just one attempt to the next

I am still trying to find that one weapon that will make me forget all the jank, we’ll see
I liked the fallen star beast jaw weapon a lot. Once I got it, made my runny around a lot easier. It's probably nerfed though.

Wrong.
There is no 'seemingly'.

I heard it is very op’d and makes the game fairly trivial, I had considered getting it early.

It also looks stupid as hell and takes up your entire screen

I watched a lot of that guy's videos when I was playing for fights that were just annoying, they're great. I just like it because it's fire and forget and will stagger enemies maybe after a couple of hits or something I don't remember.

What can I say I'm an old man.

I get it, I just feel like I’ll get bored of it, plus really what’s more powerful here the loot or the damage over time skill he used to get it

I had to watch the video because I didn't remember. I don't think I necessarily used that tactic or at least I tried to or I think fucked it up, and I ended up having a fight the damn monster, and somehow survived on my first attempt. I don't remember what I was using but I think I had some rot magic or spell or something, and I just ran around until I got him down. I think I somehow remounted and just ran around jousting it. It was pretty fun though.

The weapon itself is or was amazing. I just know they constantly patched and buffed or debuffed weapons because of the stupid PVP element, so I have no clue if the weapon you can get is as powerful as it was back in the day. That kind of stuff pisses me off because I consider it to be a single player game but yet they're going to sit there and dick around "balancing" for an element of the game I don't give a shit about.

I never got into the invasions or any of that stuff because I know there was going to be some kid that's going to whoop my ass. I just wish the game would have had co-op without that stupid summoning system where you could have just played with your buddies from the get-go, but I think there's a mod that allows you to do so and everybody can pick up the gear that you're rewarded for downing whatever monster or finding it in a dungeon.

I've been putting off buying Elden Ring for years. It's on sale a decent amount right now and I'm tempted to buy it, but I feel like I'm going to end up like you and it's just...not for me.
Outside of Nintendo games in the 90s (like Zelda and Mario), I don't play Japanese games or have any nostalgia for them. Not sure if that contributed to it, but I did not really like Elden Ring either.

The mage/caster gameplay sucks, as it consists of kiting shit using the same, most efficient, spell for most of the game, but people seem to love the melee game.

There is hardly any story and if you want it to make sense, you probably need to go read notes or "books" scattered about. I don't remember much, if any, choice and conscience (maybe the white witch quest?) but I quit playing out of boredom after hitting the second invisible wall so maybe it mattered for the end.

The best part of the game is exploration but, unless you just love the combat and busy work, it can get annoying "clearing" areas (everything respawns) and not getting anything you want to use. With such a huge world (that have little or no quests/story involved with them) it incentivizes looking up where to find useful gear for what you want to play. Also, there are at least two invisible walls (before and after the main enemy city) and a soft locked area (getting into the underground), that require killing bosses before you can pass them.

And if you do read into the lore on the internet you found out at least two of the major gods got some weird tranny/self masturbation reproduction going on. The “chick” riding Promised Consort Radahn’s back is a dude…like that’s not even the chick clone of the god, that’s the dude version and he want’s his “brother?” as his consort. Sounds pretty fucking Veilguard to me

You missed the obvious fucked up lore that Marika is Radagon and the fucked up gods are cuz Marika pretty much fucked herself and they're the incest offspring

Marika/Radagon Miquella/Trina, were the “two”, I don’t know if they’re incest babies really, in the sense that the same being can’t sexually reproduce with itself…as far as I’m aware. I know there’s a female lizard, where the male has gone extinct, and the females basically found away to clone themselves…but Miquella is the dude version, and clearly some tranny thing. They actually had something very similar and weird in DS3 but I don’t think it was ever actually explained. Then there’s the female Witch doll that you can marry…the devs of this game clearly have some fucked up fetishes

The spirits make the game pretty easy imo. I did outlevel a lot of it.

Yeah, Elden Ring is a pretty easy game when it comes down to it. Friend of mine was afraid to play it because Game Journalists had filled his head with a bunch of stuff about how impossible the game was and how he'd spend hours and hours fighting a single boss until he got past it

And I was like "Dude, literally every boss in the game isn't required to progress, outside of the final boss, you can always just go somewhere else and do a different area if you're not strong enough for a boss yet. And you can grind some levels to get stronger, there's no need to beat your head on a fight you're not strong enough for for hours"

Finally I just bought the game for him so he'd try it, and he did, and very quickly was like "wow, this isn't bad at all". Though he did get frustrated on a few parts where he got stunlocked or gang-banged. I think the twin gargoyles boss made him ragequit.

By the end he beat Malenia by himself, took him like 45 minutes, and that was the worst thing the game ever really threw at him. I think he also beat the final boss solo, but he might have summoned me for that, I can't remember at this point.

Regardless, the game was nowhere near what it was portrayed as, just like I told him. The summons make the game so much easier, too. I guess if you're going unga bunga Str build and refusing to use spells or summons, then the game really is hard, but that's entirely up to you and nothing the game forces on anybody.

All the "it needs an easy mode" people are the kind of people who want to throw paint on priceless paintings and call it "activism"

For me it was dual wielding katanas. Rivers of Blood + Cold Uchigatana is particularly good because you're getting huge Bleed and Frostbite procs out of your L1 double-slashes. That setup can't really get going until like 75% of the way through the game though. An earlier ghetto version would be picking Samurai (to start with an Uchi), getting the Uchi so you now have 2 of them, and making one Blood / one Cold.

The DLC Shadow of the Erdtree has a ton of awesome weapons that are worth maining. I wish some of them were sprinkled throughout the main game, because by the time I get them in the DLC I'm even more done with the game already. I guess they're for NG+ runs. There was one double-bladed voulge / twinblade that lit up with gold Holy energy when you attacked, and it was incredible-looking, but by the time I got it I was like 98% done with the game.

I think I’ve found it in the Grave Scythe with Storm Caller, but I’ll need to fight a significant boss with it, to be sure it suits me. I would try the Sword Lance or Obsidian Lamina in the DLC, but I haven’t progressed beyond the bird farm, and getting the War Surgeon set (the NPC invader and I both drawed and killed each other with Bleed) let alone gotten to fight Mogh …I think I should get my fourth pouch before I fight him

I haven't played a lot of the souls games, and I'm not very good. That being said, it a pretty amazing game, especially the first time. I also don't mind looking up ways to cheese fights that I find annoying. To me the most fun of the game is just the whole exploratory aspect and the world. If you stick with it though you do end up finding yourself getting better and it's not as frustrating, but there's definitely some areas and bosses that walk the line between being challenging and just not fun.

If it's on a heavy sale right now it's worth picking up. I don't know if there are mods or anything, but I'm sure there are ways to make it easier if you wanted to just see everything.
So I bought it and...it feels terrible? Everything feels super clunky and slow. I'm not particularly far into it, but the combat feels like molasses. The dodge roll seems worthless, so I guess I'm just supposed to strafe run most attacks. It's odd I see so many people complain about Claire Obscur parry mechanics, and then Elden Ring is called the greatest game of all time and it's got these retarded feint attacks constantly and you can't actually do anything to dodge them?

What am I missing about this game? It feels like the difficulty comes not from not knowing the fights and getting hit by a bad action (the Dark Souls archetype), but rather because your character feels like such ass that you have to compensate for bad controls?

Dodging gives you iframes, but the heavier your weight/load, the less iframes you get so check your weight and make sure you aren't fat rolling. Jumping also gives you some iframes and good for dodging low attacks and ground slams. Usually its better to dodge/jump sideways instead of away from your opponent as fromsoft seems to love to punish moving away.

So there are light rolls, medium rolls, heavy rolls, and overloaded.

You want to have light to medium rolls, these offer I-frames (invincibility frames), the actual roll itself is not connected to whether you get hit , it’s whether you activated the roll in time to get the I-frames, but there is no visual indications of your temporary invincibility, so you can back roll and get skewered by a spear that does no damage to you. The direction of the roll is only relevant to whether you get hit with a follow up attack/roll catch. Like the second boss does a giant AOE fire like Diablo, it fans out, so were you to roll backwards you would be rolling right back into the fire. There’s a boss that charges you in the DLC and the only roll that works is to roll right under his giant boar mount, were you would intuitively expect to be crushed, but this game isn’t intuitive. You can’t even unbind sprint from the roll key ffs (intentionally overloaded and using dynasts AOW, so I didn’t want to accidentally fat roll as just an example). Oh and there will be shit in the way, so when you roll you get stuck on stuff, like dungeons are made to get you stuck and cornered on shit, because position is the only critical factor in this game.

I explain this to you, so you understand that I do understand the nuances of the game, before I conclude with agreeing with you that the game is janky.

Know that there are probably 10 strategies for beating a given boss, nine of them make the game trivial and clearly weren’t balanced at all by the devs, such that posters above me will call the game easy despite clearly using a strategy that was thrown in ontop of the clear, DS3 Iframes rolling strategy, that the game was balanced around. Summons/mimics will literally beat the boss for you… tossing an Ice-bomb can completely nullify one of the hardest fights in the game, but that’s hardly playing the game. Actually playing the game feels like Football, where you’re stuck on Defense for X period of time, before you can open up your offense. Usually an RPG like game might require you to learn your enemy somewhat, and employ your own strategy, where as here your basically only learning to react to what the boss does, and you’re strategy is completely waiting for your offensive cycle to start

They conclude that when I say vindictive, I mean hard , but no I mean vindictive, like designed to trick/trap/frustrate the player, and conversely exploiting the game seems to be rewarded.

All of these Souls games have slow-ish controls to give them that "action RPG" flavor where planning your actions a second or two in advance (usually the foes are a bit slow-moving as well) is rewarded. Well, except Sekiro, which is fast and about twitch rather than planning.

I'd say the main thing you're missing is rolling. Rolling isn't worthless, it actually makes you invincible for a second. You can avoid literally any attack with good roll timing. One thing that usually takes people a while to get is that it's much better to roll TOWARD attacks rather than away from them. Instead of using it as an escape tool, and finding it less effective than just sprinting away, try using it as a distance-closing tool. Enemy attacks, roll under their attack and strike back.

If you ever watched pro wrestling in the late 90's, it's a bit like when Stone Cold or Shawn Michaels (or whoever) would run forward and duck under an opponent's move and then hit them with their own move as the opponent turned around (they'd always be vulnerable for a moment, in wrestling physics, when this happened).
