I’m at 68 stars so far, and I don’t think I’ll aim for 120—this old game isn’t exactly easy. I’m curious if the N64 analog stick might be better suited for this than the sticks on modern Xbox controllers.

Even playing starfox 64 - let alone goldeneye… the n64 controllers while odd- everything was very made to fit the controller and how it was- it does not translate well to any mapping of a modern controller really lol

Nerd game alert: I started to play The Message from Deep Space. It's a game about communicating with aliens except you start from absolute scratch and little by little you develop a communication system. It is arid and some affinity with math, logic, programming and/or linguistics is required, but it's pretty engrossing how you build a language from universal things. The game seems pretty damn long also. I am 7 hours in and still in Act 2 for a game that has like 14 acts! HowLongToBeat suggests 46 hours. I'll let you know.

Yeah, I can imagine. I might give SFox64 a try now since I just finished M64.

Starcom: Nexus. Beat this a few days ago. Great adventure with a good story and crazy twists. Decent 2-d top-down space combat.

Playing the sequel as I write this. I doubt that it's going to be a better story than Nexus, but we'll see. It's got a murderous technophobe cult and a certain alien race just pissed me the fuck off with some Pearl Harbor type bullshit and now i'm in a genocidal mood. So it's off to a good start,

I've had both of these games on my Wishlist for a long time. I may just pull the trigger.

I bought a Switch 2 to play with the wife. I got it takes 2 based on the pig video Utnayan Utnayan posted. Unfortunately, she just cannot get used to the controller. I do recall how hard it was for me at first and I don't want to discourage her. She can do Mario Kart alright though. I still kick her ass, I am not throwing a game. you win you earn it!

um yeah that's what I meant. Not sure where I came up with it takes 2. She cannot grasp the controller so it doesn't matter.
Real talk if she wants to learn and you enjoy playing with her print out a large basic poster that says what the buttons do. You put it right below or right next to the TV. I did this with my wife years ago and now the bottom button is always X and the top is always triangle no matter what controller she’s using and she no longer has to look down.

The Lego games are great co-op low pressure tools to learn. Fighting games give a thrill. And any kind of arcade game like Mario kart are easy to learn hard to master.

she struggles with 1 thumbstick. I was trying to show her how to use the right one to move the camera and it was not taking. I don't want to discourage her either. I can see what you suggest blowing up in my face when she thinks I'm calling her dumb. Lego game is a good idea. Wonder if Nintendo wants $70 for a decade old lego remake.

Can also bind a button in most games to reset camera to behind, did that for a bit as well.

Xcom long war still when im alone. When my 7 year old wants to play pal world we play palworld. Its wild teaching a kid mouse and keyboard coop game play. She frequently is like "daddy where are you" and im 30 feet away up hill. So she runs off to chase nothing. I have to have her stop. Turn around. Angle up.

But she got that thirst for rare or new pals so she is learning fast

Dude that's so awesome.

If she ever wants in on the Long War action, that's when you know you've won at life.

(Where are you in your campaign? Gimme some cliff notes!)

In long war? I liquidated material to build satellites and gear early and am now low on resources but without fancy ufo tech fighters to bring down big ships. But my team is good. First plasma carbine about to finish. 3 active jaegers....and one regretful archer. Got some psi boys. Some Gene boys. Mostly run like...medic assault assault. Scout heavy Jaeger engineer infantry. Explode cover. Maximize multishots and Jaeger cleaning. Assault boy down big targets fast. Shredder on heavy and 1 assault boy (for multishot).

Im thirsting for engineers for more nexuses and...I guess mostly alerium to make more power armor. Still mostly using gauss guns

Hmm you prefer Jaeger to ITZ Sniper eh?

No gunners? I absolutely love the biotank gunners, shrugging off 6 damage with DR, hilarious.

Oh, i do use gunners a lot. i called it a heavy in my post but yea gunner with the larger machine gun that gives baby squad site. I take one on every mission. they are clunky to use. weirdly, i've learned to like those guys as commanders. when they are forced to move and can't fire , and don't need to reload, i can yell for the jaeger/scout/assault to move forward or fire again.

yes i adore jaeger. they start with in the zone. so even a baby jaeger can push the line forward. I'm not an iron man player, i restart missions a lot if i super goof on the mission so i play more boldly than a lot of players. all the jaeger has to have is guys without cover. so either walk it behind the battle line, and mop up. or use the engineer with six grenades to just remove cover and he can sit further back and pick them apart. i don't have one with squad site yet, i imagine it gets absurd. the jaeger is also completely insane in exalt missions because all the terrain is super breakable, and it's easy to expose large groups and the jaeger can basically kill a soldier every action and empty his whole magazine doing that.

a lot of what i do involves just exposing guys. then the 2 shot gunners, or 2 shot infantry, or infinite shot jaeger mops them up, and i basically view the mission as a puzzle game. i'll start the turn seeing who the gunner can shred (since he can't move), then see who the scout can waste-overwatch at. then engineer destroy some cover, then use the jaeger to clean up as much as i can. then assault boys hoot and hit people with their gun point blank on the fat boys or really dangerous units.

I neglected to mention in my campaign cliff notes that i have been, religiously, using the arc projector in most of my missions when an opportunity presented itself. scout always holds one. the engineer held one too early in the campaign. so i have a plethora of alien weapons to turn into plasma when i get more parts. and i've had basically every council-request-for-prisoners on hand, so that's been nice.
