This scene in the Deadwood pilot really let you know what kind of man Seth Bullock was going to be.

not particularly realistic, but it certainly set a tone.

I've watched pretty much every show mentioned in this thread and I don't remember the first episode of any of them. Where did my memories go?!

Love Cowboy Bebop (my favourite show of all time) but i don't think the 1st episode is great imo.

I think they were trying to make a soft core gayporn show at first, and then they looked at their secret spy numbers and realized that they could go full goreporn with it.

Season 1 Spartacus is sooooooooooooooooooooooo gay. "Oil me up bro, don't forget to do my butt. And my balls. Ah fuck, just suck it. You know you want to." Hell, the entire thing is as gay as two dudes fucking two other dudes, but season 1 manages to be the gayest.

Great show.

faille, Firefly is in my all-time-all-times, but the pilot wasn't good :p. I'll check into episode 1 though.

Exactly. What could be straighter than watching two oiled up naked dudes hugging each other?

Dude, that'sstraight.

That would beSpartacus. All of those first 4 or 5 episodes were one step above pure dog shit, yet they some how turned it around into one hell of a season finale. Even the 2nd season (the prequel) was damn good tv. To this day I have never seen a show turn the ship around like they did.
This. If this question was rephrased to "what show had the best series finale ever" it would undoubtedly have to be Spartacus, and the thread would have to be locked after that to prevent insult to probably the best hour of television I've ever seen.

The Deadwood first episode must not be that great because it did not make me watch the show past that. I am not saying the show is bad or anything like that, but the subject matter did not do it for me (not much into western) and the fact it was a muddy sausage fest did not help either (watched all of Hell on Wheels though).

Since it was not mentioned, I will add "Heroes" to the list. The music in that show was incredible and not knowing initially how the story would play out added to my desire to keep watching. It is a shame it went down hill after season one.

I really cannot encourage you enough to give that show a chance. Sure, its just not some people's cup of tea and some just do not like "westerns" but if you watched all of Hell on Wheels and enjoyed it even a little, then you owe it to yourself to give Deadwood a chance. At least try out the first 4 or 5 episodes, if it still sucks to you then fair enough, but I really think you would enjoy the hell out of it. Season one is great, but season two is simply some of the best TV out there, hell even season 3 keeps up that same momentum.

Heroes,

It may have gone to shit after season 1 but Season 1 (at the time) was incredible. I defy anyone to watch the first episode and not want to keep watching.

Sherlock, it sets up the whole cast brilliantly, with the ending being brilliantly simple, it also honors the old adage that if you show a gun, somebody has to shoot.

Futurama, the first episode is timeless.

Personally i'm also fond of Ghost in the Shell, first episode set the mood for the whole series.

You watched deadwood lite and not deadwood? Seriously? Don't get me wrong, Deadwood is one of those shows I can totally see someone not enjoying due to the theme, setting, language and a host of other factors that give it a specific taste. But really can't imagine someone who enjoyed Hell on Wheels, not enjoying the hell out of Deadwood. (btw, there are more female main characters in DW than Hell on wheels.)

Its kinda hard to think of Calamity Jane as a female lead. Or Ms. Lesbian Whoremistress Cute-Hat.

Anna Gunn and Trixie were kinda perfect though.

First episode of heroes wasn't that great, but it did have one of the best first seasons.

First episode of Heroes maybe wasn't great on it's own, but it did one of the best jobs ever of setting up a series so that I wasdefinitelygoing to watch more. They did a good of setting up the show as a must-watch, especially the end of the episode with Hiro teleporting to Times Square.
