Good lists.
I watched/rewatched and opinion ranked several that were available on Netflix:
Breaking Bad; 8.9
The Walking Dead; 7.7
Archer; 7.6
Battlestar Galactica; 6.8 - Makes me kind of sad the direction they took with this show. Good first episode.
Sons of Anarchy; 6.7
Star Trek: TNG; 6.4 - Started out good with the voice journaling, but Q and crew were just too goofy.

Lost's first episode was pretty spectacular, in my opinion. Too bad it went to such shit.

Mad Men. First episode you see Don Draper Killing it at work and getting tons of pussy and just generally being The Man while living the bachelor life. Then at the very end he goes home to his wife and kids and you're like WTF.
This one wins.

Honestly, all the great classic TV of the last decade had amazing pilot episodes. I can't think of a single show that had a terrible pilot and ended up among the greats.

I don't think Breaking Bad's pilot was all that great. It sets up the show well, but it's far from being considered a "best" first episode.

Lost for sure, but its a shame I can't type that without getting pissed off all over again. JJ, Lindelof, go fuck yourselves.

Eureka and Defiance. But I'd probably put Defiance #1, they had me hooked in like 30 seconds when they started singing Johnny Cash.

This is going a completely different direction but I think The League had the best start for any sitcom I've ever seen. I was laughing within the first 5 minutes and was ready for the entire season about 10 minutes in

I'm quite surprised Sopranos has only one mention.

Game of Thrones hasn't been mentioned yet, but when you watched the series for 3 seasons and are used to it's slow pace and you look back and realize just how much happening they put into the 1st episode it's pretty damn solid. Solid enough to get girls who balk at the thought of watching a show like GoT way into it.

That would beSpartacus. All of those first 4 or 5 episodes were one step above pure dog shit, yet they some how turned it around into one hell of a season finale. Even the 2nd season (the prequel) was damn good tv. To this day I have never seen a show turn the ship around like they did.

Ahem

-BSG (blew me the fuck away with how interested I got into that world so quickly)
-LOST (even the fucking trailer for the first episode peeked the hell out of my interests)
-Deadwood (obviously)
-GoT (I was so relieved after the first episode, I knew it was going to be in great hands)
-ROME (as others have said, covered so much ground, was great)
Granted it is abbreviated and probably easy to miss.

Seinfeld's pilot really wasn't very good. Although "The Pilot" was a great episode.

I forgot how good GoT first episode was too until I went back and looked. Now I remember telling several people, "Just watch the first episode. If you aren't hooked after that, you won't like the show."

Don't forget, it ended with "The things I do for love" and pushing a kid out of a window. Totally unexpected (if you didn't read the books) and totally brutal. And totally awesome. Anyone that had never read the books, that was all they could talk about the next several days. It was almost a phenomenon I'd say.

Lost is probably one of my all-time favorites too.

I think they were trying to make a soft core gayporn show at first, and then they looked at their secret spy numbers and realized that they could go full goreporn with it.

Season 1 Spartacus is sooooooooooooooooooooooo gay. "Oil me up bro, don't forget to do my butt. And my balls. Ah fuck, just suck it. You know you want to." Hell, the entire thing is as gay as two dudes fucking two other dudes, but season 1 manages to be the gayest.

Great show.

I wouldn't go that far... But yes, Spartacus was my first thought too. First season of that show was the best season of television I've ever seen. First episode was so bad... But every single episode was exponentially better than the last. No idea how they pulled that off
