Outside of the slightly different headlights and the color, it doesn't look like they changed much. I'm sure they probably updated the interior quite a bit though, as the shadow of the seats look different and interior style preferences usually change more than exterior ones.

Those type of cars are really not my thing though, so maybe I am missing something?

better engine, interior and the updated touch controls. Still drives like a GTI (Mine atleast) and I think the R has more power than previous gen on the R? Not 100% on that one.

I have a manual Mk4 2004 2. slow that I've owned since 08. The trade in has never been worth it. I also own a 2019 Off Road Tacoma that basically lives in my garage, my wife has a 2018 VW Tiguan as her daily but works from home that spends most of it time in the garage.

I really want a blue 20th anniversary Golf but deep down I know it would a sit most of the time because nothing can happen to my daily that I would be upset about. Plus its nice not having a payment on any of our vehicles.

Got a little saddle time today . . . about 460 klms with sunshine for most of the day, a timy bit of rain, and then darkness+ torrential rain on the last leg home.
(Open face helmet + 110 kph + rain = bad evening unless you are into needles pushed into your face)

It IS a 20th anniversary edition R in standard.
It drives great, but the human interface technology (touch controls everywhere- no knobs or buttons) is very stupid.

and it has an "R" :
