VCM (Variable Cylinder Management) on those have been bad for eons. You can get a VCM/ECO bypass module that takes 10 minutes to install, costs $150. VCM 2.0 on the previous gen was known to break piston rings, engine mounts, cause excess oil burning. I don't know about the VCM implementation on the new ones, but it can be bypassed with said kit.
Cylinder deactivation is one of those technologies that needs to go to the trashbin of history. I can't think of a single engine it's been implemented on that hasn't completely torpedoed the reliability. Good to know it's a simple fix if I ever go that route.

Same goes for idle stop/start on a non-hybrid. Completely annoying and saves nearly no fuel in the real world. On my wife's old car, I intentionally tried to maximize the off time as an experiment. After 8000 miles of driving a pretty much 50/50 city/highway split, it saved 4 liters of fuel. Thanks California/Obama!
