VCM (Variable Cylinder Management) on those have been bad for eons. You can get a VCM/ECO bypass module that takes 10 minutes to install, costs $150. VCM 2.0 on the previous gen was known to break piston rings, engine mounts, cause excess oil burning. I don't know about the VCM implementation on the new ones, but it can be bypassed with said kit.
Cylinder deactivation is one of those technologies that needs to go to the trashbin of history. I can't think of a single engine it's been implemented on that hasn't completely torpedoed the reliability. Good to know it's a simple fix if I ever go that route.

Same goes for idle stop/start on a non-hybrid. Completely annoying and saves nearly no fuel in the real world. On my wife's old car, I intentionally tried to maximize the off time as an experiment. After 8000 miles of driving a pretty much 50/50 city/highway split, it saved 4 liters of fuel. Thanks California/Obama!

Just got a Tesla Model 3 during the big sale they had.

Thinking about making and putting an "I appreciate all the good things Elon has done for humanity and the Earth over the last 15 years" sticker on it, wondering how many days it would last before it got keyed or damaged.

Incredible car (especially the acceleration, the climate control, and the safety features).

However I can already tell that charging it is a pain in the ass. Charging stations are either too slow or too pricey, and sometimes both at the same time. Like one charger cost $4 for what ended up being just under 10% charge and it took an hour...ridiculous. Also the charge doesn't last a super long time. It goes about 300 miles on a full charge, but a lot of other things use up charge besides mileage. For example, leaving Sentry Mode on while the car is inactive eats up charge. Think I lost 8% the first night that I left Sentry Mode on. Which, unfortunately, I have to do because of people's bullshit. Was hoping Sentry Mode would be much lower-power and only really eat charge if it had to turn on due to an event, but nope.

All of that aside, everything else about it is basically spotless and a Model 3 is as good as everyone says it is.

Having owned Teslas for over a decade now, I have to question the veracity of your last statement. How on earth did it take an hour to charge 10%? Was it plugged into a wall socket or something? It’s NEVER taken that long for me to charge, even with the old 120 kW chargers…..clearly you weren’t using a Tesla charger, which should be the only chargers you ever use, they are designed for the car and are everywhere. It doesn’t even take an hour to charge the last 10% going from 90 to 100%, and that’s usually the longest segment.

To prevent further misinformation, I will say that the average charge time to go from 20% to 80%, which is what most people charge, takes around 30-40 minutes total. Faster if you have a newer model on a 250 kW charger or above, slower if you have an older model using a 150 kW charger.

I highly recommend getting a home charger if at all possible. It's what gives most of the convenience of an electric car over a gasoline one. No waiting around for other people, no leaving early to get gas etc. Plug in when you get home for the night and forget about it.

Sentry mode battery drain is a known thing they are apparently working on.

If you can get a home charger as said above- that really is what makes an EV super convenient.

Looks like 2025 production is complete on the M2, so I got one of the first 2026 allocations. Delivery should still be around October. Been watching a bunch of videos on the ECU unlocks they do for these and are getting like 600 hp at the wheels on the tune alone. Need to talk myself out of this shit...

No you don't. Modded cars are more personal. However, the ZF can handle that easy. Not sure if the 6 speed can.

So you feel the need to talk yourself out of.... Happiness? Joy? Fulfillment? Help me understand here, have you thought about seeing a therapist about this?

From what I've read most suggest not going higher than 500 lb-ft on the stock manual, though it doesn't look like too many people are having problems on the higher range of that. I think the manual is around 405 lb ft stock at 473hp. I will probably end up pushing up against the 500 lb-ft on the tune. Worst case scenario, Wagner makes a clutch for the G87 that can handle like 800 lb-ft! It ain't cheap though. The cost to unlock my ECU is already pretty fucking retarded as there is apparently only one company who is doing it on late model beamers and they are in Europe. Will cost me about a grand for that, then another 700ish for the BootMod3 software. From the results I've seen, it's worth it.

I’d take that over the $5,000 for ECU tunes that I see. Surely someone else makes clutches that will fit? Dodson, Monster, etc.

That was the first day I had the car, but I can confirm that my statement wasn't even an exaggeration. It wasn't an official Tesla charger though. It was a "Greenspot" charger down the street from me, the closest public charger by far (thus the most convenient, so I was testing it and hoping it worked well). And yes, it was an hour to charge 10% and cost $4.50 or so.

That was just a trial run to see if those chargers were any good. Once I determined that the chargers were in fact dogshit, I found the nearest Tesla Supercharger and filled up there. $27 to go from about 10% to 100%, took about 45 minutes.

I'm still disappointed, because $27 is about what my previous car cost to fill up at around $3.20/gallon. So I'm paying the same amount (probably more, factoring in that a tank doesn't go as far now) to fill up, only with an additional substantial wait. This was with the fast charger too. I've definitely spent more on electric power over the past week than I did on gas in the average week with my old car.

Been looking for a slow charger that's free, where I can plug in for a few hours while I run errands and get some energy back without breaking the bank, but so far the only free chargers I've found have been in private guarded lots like hotel parking.

The Sentry Mode, which unfortunately has to be kept on these days, drains the battery quick too. I found that closing the app out completely when the car isn't in use helps slow down the "idle drain" due to not running any extra processes, but I'm not sure if Sentry Mode stays on when I do that.

Pay chargers are really close, sometimes a bit less, sometimes a bit more than gas.

As many stated, it really only is good when you have a home charger.

If you see people driving an “old” S or X, they usually are enjoying the free super charging for life that the early promos had.

Tesla pushing sales hard w/ the tax back going away. Used prices are going to get funky for a bit.

Elon slashed prices when the tax dropped for a few months before it was renewed a few years ago… so there is a chance he will cut prices again, most likely a few months after the tax thing officially ends, he cries on X etc etc

May be a good time to offload the Mach-e — its used prices have been all over the place and now w new losing tax credit - i think they already did bc they are mexi cars.

I've heard that the home chargers spike your electric bill, though. That said, it looks like Tesla sells solar-powered generators for pretty cheap now, and you can attach a home charger to one of those and just run off of solar.

This sort of thing is 100% "the way to do it" with these cars. Just filling up normally is nowhere near what I expected / hoped for, and a pain in the ass so far.

Car also loses about 8% charge per night, so there's that on top of everything else. That's roughly $70/month of just lost charge (likely from Sentry Mode). Glad to hear they're aware of the drain and working on it, at least.

Unfortunately a solar generator is a no-go for me since I'm in an apartment residence, no house to install something like that outside of.

To say something positive about the Model 3, the acceleration on it is BEASTLY. I'm talking going from 40 to 100 in about 3 seconds. Can practically teleport forward if I need to. First car I've ever driven in that I think could dodge-roll out of the way of an oncoming t-bone with minimal warning.
