no one deserves to be stabbed to death by their kid.
I'm pretty sure there are a LOT of people that deserve to be stabbed to death by their kids. No idea if this is one of those cases, maybe depends on whether or not you think there was any truth behind Franklin's joke? We have some idea of what some Hollywood people do to child actors. Do we think their own kids are immune to that kind of treatment? Again, no idea if that's the case here, but something pretty fucked up had to happen...

His son was a druggie. That is a danger for any family. If you don't cut someone like that off you are literally putting your life at risk. That is true no matter what type of politics you hold, or what socioeconomic strata your family is in.

I'm not sad he's dead, but I don't think very many people deserve to go out like that. I feel bad for his other kids, and that's about that. He made some pretty good movies that had a cultural impact on me. He then turned into a useless proglib activist. CO has a lot of rich proglibs, unfortunately, so I grew up surrounded by that idiocy being spewed by people who would never have to deal with the hell their policies create.

People keep saying this like the explanation stops there. He didn't become a druggie in a vacuum. Maybe his parents were great and didn't have anything to do with that, no idea. Just saying that if this were a child actor instead of the child of a director, I think people would be more like "what did Hollywood do to them?" instead of "welp, just druggie things!"

He could have been born with fucked up wiring with the gravitation towards drugs a symptom of that but we don't have anything to go on one way or the other.

He was a shitty person. But, no one deserves to be stabbed to death by their kid.
I can think of more than a few reasons why someone would stab a parent to death. Pick any day that ends in a Y and spend it on the internet.

The reason he got into drugs could be anything, but it was his choice. That's how addiction is. And addicts destroy lives. That's how addicts are.

Getting shived by your son is a shitty way for anyone to go out. Not gonna tone police anyone who wants to celebrate his death, but that's not for me. You have to be a truly vile and malevolent person for me to feel joy at your death. Like Dick Cheney. Or Hillary Clinton.

I'm not celebrating or absolving the son of blame. I was just commenting on whether or not anyone could deserve it, and yes, many people do. And based on zero evidence, I'll assume that the % of people in Hollywood that deserve it is higher than normal. I mean, if Brittney Spears stabbed her mom tomorrow, I don't think many of us would be too surprised.

Maybe, but there is no evidence of that being the case here.

His son was a serious drug addict, in and out of homelessness and rehab.

It wouldn't be a stretch to say he stopped giving his son money and that led to the fight.
The public argument was at Conan O'Brien's Christmas party, not too outlandish to imagine someone else brought a little something along to a Hollywood party, the kid partook / acquired some, and the dad went ballistic when he found out, adding public embarrassment to whatever drug fueled reasoning the kid may have had.

I've said this before, and now in conjunction with Franken's joke:

"Not everyone who gets fucked with as a child becomes a drug addict, but it's fucking amazing how many drug addicts were fucked with as kids."

This is 100% true. There's a guy on YouTube with a channel called "Soft White Underbelly" where he interviews drug addicts, prostitutes, porn stars, street people, criminals etc. It's like 1 in 1000 of them that *didn't* have a fucked up childhood due to sexual abuse or some other horrific thing that adults did to them. The funny thing is, when he asks about their childhood, most of them start out with "I had a pretty good childhood". Then they go on to talk about how their dad was in prison, their mom was on meth, their uncle raped them, their grandmother beat them with a shoe and locked them out of the house overnight, etc. but other than that it was good times.

The druggies I knew in the 80/90s were that way because they enjoyed getting high and got hooked on it. Mostly high functioning ones, thankfully, but there are plenty of those kinds as well. Why someone chooses to get into drugs doesn't really matter much. An addict is an addict, and is going to do addict things. It almost always ends in tragedy.

True, but also, you don't know what happened to them during their childhood. The people I know who were molested as children don't tend to talk about it to even their close friends.

supposedly nick went into his first rehab at 15 and afterwards was still stealing money to pay for drugs and hookers. he also said been in rehab a total of 17 times. his parents over the years gave him money and places to live, he would give them up and be homeless to go back to drugs/hookers.
