Worth going all Apple?

Dude, you want to argue that your MacBook is better than any PC, I can accept that because it is at least somewhat objective. But to seriously argue that you can get a Mac for the same or less than an equivalent PC is sheer lunacy.

Go onto Dell's site and configure yourself one that is VERY close.. I did and it came out to $1150.00
Ok, well now you're saying that you can configure a computer that is close, but still inferior, to a $1500 macbook for $1150. There's still a good handful of hardware upgrades (mag safe, multitouch, thunderbolt, etc etc) that configured Dell didn't have, that the Macbook does (and vice versa.) That's not nearly as bad as that $1200 difference you were trying to claim earlier. I'm not saying a Macbook is better than any PC, I'm just saying that it sure seems like you can't build a comparable PC for really much cheaper than a macbook. Sure, there's an Apple tax, but it's not nearly as bad as most PC people will have you believe. You kind of just proved this. I guess the real difference with Apple is that they don't make bargain basement disposable hardware, like that Lenovo you posted earlier. You went from a Diahatsu to a Lexus, but it's still not a Mercedes.

Just a personal example, but I went back to school as an adult (had 8 years of IT experience and changed fields to finance). I had a group project where I had to work with some kid who had a Mac. Watching him fumble around trying to do shit like click and it ending up minimizing and all sorts of other random shit, when all we needed to do was format an Excel document...yeah, fuck that. I'd never use one. Looks terrible. Absolutely a ridiculous experience.

I do have a first generation iPod nano. Thing has been running like a champ for about 7 years now?

The problem with apple is not the hardware, the hardware is solid, if a bit overpriced. The problem is the people. Apple is the Scientology of the computer world. They charge you for the same shit but in the process you become a fucking pod person. Now some of my best friends are pod people of the apple variety, but that does not mean I want to become one of them. (Shudder)

I'm genuinely interested if you can find a equivalent non-Apple laptop for cheaper.
It isn't inferior.. Dell's are solid machines, I just hate them because from a network admin standpoint their support is all offshore and I fucking hate talking to Indian IT people. It has the same glitzy anodized aluminum case, same specs, and is a very well reviewed machine. It's also 2 pounds lighter and has a removable battery. Fuck Mac and their non user replaceable batteries.

And there is nothing bargain basement about that Lenovo. Are you familiar with the manufacturer of the various components as well as having practical on the job experience with them Mr. IT person? We have over 50 Lenovo's deployed to our mobile workforce and they are built like tanks and have a very low failure rate compared to the HP's we ran before. Meanwhile I've got an executive's Mac sitting at the Mac hippie store with a blown hard drive for almost a week now.

This has nothing to do with a Mac vs PC debate, but myself, and anyone that knows what's up and wants a PC, would grab that $599 Lenovo, throw in a 128gb SSD for $120 and 4GB of ram $40 for call it a day. Best bang for your buck hands down. Fuck paying for an aluminum case, and most people wouldn't give a shit about the better webcam and gigabit port.

Ok, well now you're saying that you can configure a computer that is close, but still inferior, to a $1500 macbook for $1150. And yet it's still inferior, and it's still a dell, etc, and it's only a $350 difference. That's not nearly as bad as that $1200 difference you were trying to claim earlier. I'm not saying a Macbook is better than any PC. I'm just saying that it sure seems like you can't build a comparable PC for really much cheaper than a macbook. I don't disagree with most of your points. I just thnk for what you get, the Macs aren't really that over priced. Again, it of course depends if you just want bang for the buck (a Honda) or if you want something better. I'd hate using that Lenovo for hours a day. Again, personal preference.

I feel like aychamo picked a bunch of shit that only a Mac would have, and he's daring you to find a laptop that'd have that same shit.

Explain what this means. Be specific.
Macbooks are made out of machined aluminium. This means that they're sturdy as hell and can survive some really hard knocks. I've dropped mine from 6ft onto concrete and it worked perfectly afterwards. I've also stood on it by accident and it didn't even get dented. Macbooks are by far the best build laptops I've ever used.

If there was a laptop out there that had the same stuff that a Macbook has, I'd consider picking it up. I don't have much loyalty to Apple. There isn't a laptop out there that does, though.

What's most important to me is..

- Build quality
- Trackpad
- Worldwide warranty/support
- Battery life
- Size/weight
- Quality of keyboard
- Quality of screen
- Magsafe-esque power connector

And, since I'll be picking up a Retina Macbook Pro later this year, I'll be looking for a laptop with a Retina class screen.

If you can find me a laptop that betters a Macbook in all these areas, I'll gladly pick it up. I've yet to find one that comes close.

Yeah Cor you are definitely ready for a Mac Book purchase, all the things you are looking for have NOTHING to do with the laptop actually running software, or doing any sort of computation what so ever. So Mac away my friend.

I left it on the floor next to my bed. Stood on it in a half asleep-half awake daze. It was dumb, I know.

Is this some sort of weird sarcasm? I have no idea what you're trying to say.

I have a Windows desktop and I currently have a Macbook. I think both OSX and Windows are great operating systems and I could happily make do with either of them. For me, the differentiator is the hardware and there isn't anyone out there that challenges Apple on that front.

Heh, well, Thunderbolt is twice as fast as USB3. Multitouch trackpads change the way you interact with a windowed operating system, MagSafe can literally save you thousands in computer damage, etc. The 720p webcam is awesome and works perfectly with FaceTime to video chat with anyone who has an iPhone, iPad, or a Mac. iPhoto is a great photo organizer that allows you to order highs quality prints and photo books, etc. Many personal settings on the computer sync automatically (without extra software) between all iDevices. Messages allows you to text anyone with an iDevice, etc. You can natively stream (AirPlay) your OS's screen to an AppleTV box, and the whole thing works great to stream iTunes all over the house. And the OS runs on top of Unix. The entire OS has a scripted language element to allow you to automate a majority of tasks natively. An App Store where you won't get inundated with trojans and malware (Tyen) (I'm sure everyone will focus on that one sentence), etc.

So yeah, I did focus on some superior hardware elements that Apple has. You simply can't point to an inferior hardware gunpoint and say its equivalent.

Elurin, your anecdote about a clumsy Mac user is just that. Just because someone can't use a computer doesn't mean the computer is poorly designed. God knows there's millions of retarded PC users. Does that mean Windows sucks? No.

Is that the best you can come up with? They're called features for a reason.

^^ I forgot about the whole unibody construction. Again, I'm not saying they are the best thing on earth. Just that they are high quality, and not just overpriced versions of the same hardware. It's up to the consumer to decide if they want to purchase them.

Have you ever seen a broken laptop case? I haven't. My $250 plastic acer netbook has fallen off my TV tray onto the hardwood floor half a dozen times with no ill effects.

How do you drop your computer from 6 feet? Were you holding it above your head? Wearing it as a hat?

I didn't read every reply word for word, but the search "dual boot" didn't come up when searching. Anyways, this is one of the good options for using the Apple hardware, while overpriced compared to other brands, is pretty sleek and consistent experience. I understand why people like it.

The last company I worked at had a decent number of iMacs and MacBook Pros. Without going into the details, we put Windows 7 on all of them. Most people worked in Windows, and when necessary could switch to OSX to test something if necessary (sometimes also used VMs). Apple actually supports this with their "Boot Camp" software that comes on the iMac/OSX install disks. Has the windows drivers and everything. Very easy to do. I did it on about 10 iMacs & MacBook Pros.

I have a friend who does this full time. He has a MacBook Air with Win7 installed. So he gets the benefits of the good Apple construction, while running an operating software that he likes, and it let's him play his games.

They're like any laptop in the gaming aspect, they tend to get hot when playing games, and there's better choices out there. But if you've given up on gaming, it could definitely be something to check out.

You will need a windows key as well, which will increase the price. Assuming you pay for your software...

You'll probably be hated by both camps, the applefanboys for defiling an apple product, and the applehaters for paying for the hardware.

I put it in my backpack but forgot to close the zip. It fell out when I stood up and crashed onto the floor. I'm 6ft3 and I was standing on a raised step so I'm guessing the height was around 6ft. Might have been slightly less.

And yeah, I've seen plenty of laptops that were damaged as a result of a fall.

I spend 6 months out of the year travelling so my laptops get put through a lot of punishment. They need to be able to survive that. Aluminium is sturdier and stronger than plastic.

Haha, yeah. This is my last post in here because this thread is getting rather tedious and dull. It's been fun!

Since Apple went with the new lightning connector instead of using using micro usb that everyone uses and thus making all the old accessories pretty much useless without an adapter... I say fuck them! They could of went the usb route but noooo they wanted more money.
