Here is the mod list I played with last time. 99% of it worked fine and was pretty cool. Later in the campaign there are way touger mobs that start showing up.

Might try again soon using a collection like that. Been some time now since I did a run. Problem I've always had with modding it (not using mod collections) was that adding difficulty mods felt like a constant chain of needed mods. One makes it near impossible, but is balanced around another which makes it too easy again, so you need another, which has mobs that are balanced around classes/skills not in the base game, so you need to add those, which makes encounters where you don't face those mobs too easy, so there is another mod for that, but then you need.....

Then in the middle one things breaks everything because that isn't updated.

Hes got a mod team that does these for him. They are balanced and all the bugs worked out before the youtube vods hit. He records them ahead of time. When I played it was good, the only bugs were with the clothing the soldiers were using. some worked, some did not, but thats an easy fix. Just go into the soldier and modify them. You can also go into his discord and download all of the soldiers his followers make and submit to him. I did that as well.

But gameplay wise, the shit just worked right out of the box. If you want the full list of changes and what it does to the game, watch the first episode, he goes over all of that, plus the in game settings you should be using.

A Better Advent 2 or A Better Advent WotC might be up your alley. Significant overhaul mods that work just fine without dependencies or balancing around any other mod.

Haven't been updated since 2019 but the author still actively responds to comments as of 2 days ago so I assume they work just fine. From what I remember they're balanced to be ball-bustingly hard but still doable, so they start getting a lot easier if you add more mods that power creep in the player's favor.

Now i want to play xcom 1 long war again :(

The first Firaxis one was really good and shoulda DLC'd the alien home world invasion. The second one failed for being too silly and "mini game'd" imo. I don't care what it sold, it fell flat for many core followers.

Fire up the old XCOM: Apocalypse like I did. That was an amazing itch scratcher and I wasn't good enough at it as a kid tbh. The rerun was fantastic.

Some people agreed this one was worth the classic+ treatment and I agree. Officially endorsed by Julian Gollop no less.

I like how it's been a decade and they haven't done shit with the franchise. Last scene of the game was about water aliens so the plot was teed up.

Biggest ball fumble in gaming history.

They made that Midnight Suns game which was a tactical superhero game but with a card draw mechanic. Didn't do well and the studio had a bunch of layoffs and some of the people who worked on Xcom2 left. If Xcom3 ever happens, it will probably be done by completely different people

Combat in Midnight Suns is pretty good. Skill sets of each hero are pretty different so if you switch team combos you get different emergent play patterns. Fights are a bit more like a puzzle than whatever it is that Xcom fights produce; they take place in a confined space and enemy waves get added depending on the fight. I prefer Xcom.

The stuff in between the fights is troon level trash though. Walking around the house picking shit up, having to talk to 15 people before every fight, etc.

Yeah that game was pretty good, combat wise. But it could have been so much more. And instead of making that dreadful side game of exploring the castle compound or whatever, I wish they just concentrated on the actual combat more. Definitely not Xcom caliber, lol. I gave it a 5/10. Maybe it would have scored higher, 7/10, if not for that stupid side game and chatting up people so they like you and shit. That part was DOGSHIT.

Basically the entire core of the XCom team left to form another studio during the development of Midnight Suns which is probably the main reason why there were so many problems with the game and almost certainly why Firaxis effectively abandoned the XCom franchise despite Chimera Squad being a fun little spinoff game. The missions and deckbuilding part of Midnight Suns as a standalone would be a solid ~30 dollar game but the between mission filler was absolute garbage, especially exploring the Abbey grounds. It's also glaringly obvious they ended up having to outsource some but not all of the writing which created really big disparities in quality and tone, particularly because the lower quality outsourced writing was also the shit most likely to be laced with SJW trash.

Xenonauts is a good X-com clone, if people are looing for something else to play. Xenonauts 2 has been in EA for a few years too, but I generally don't play EAs.

80% off on GoG:

My only problem with Xenonauts (but its kind of a big one) is that it's like someone said 'hey lets make a very faithful modern remaster of the OG XCom except without any of the cheese the player could use to their advantage'. Solid game but it's very difficult and a bit of a slog.
