Someone mentioned them a couple pages back. The problem here is that they make their money with a higher spread -- i.e. you pay more for each stock you buy and get less on each sale. But that won't be shown to you, so it makes costs a lot less transparent, which is ultimately a bad thing...

To Boston Airport in the early AM

Those were the days... traveling from Switzerland to Boston, Vegas, and San Francisco for Fan Faires. Totally worth it! Alas, traveling now is almost exclusively for work -- so not quite as much fun. We should have a little ED reunion at some point. Vegas probably isn't a bad place for it!

There was the episode with the enslaved factory workers... was that season 1? I thought it became rather obvious around then. Now, it's just interesting to see how few things it takes to shift our present to that future... private firms contracting with mercenaries, for example, isn't exactly...

London.Actually not traveling from Boston until July. Lead to super-useful information, though. I'd just have counted on a taxi, which apparently isn't easy to get at that time. Could have ended badly. I've used Uber before, so I'll go with that!

Yeah, this game deserves it. Definitely play it on hard, however.

Thanks -- I could now repurchase it for $0 as well. How weird. It's downloading now -- is it also playable or does it just pre-download?

Honestly, I don't understand the PS Store. Each time I click a link, it takes half a minute to load the next page. The search function is horrible. The URLs are ridiculously long/messy. I'm really enjoying my PS4, but this is ridiculous. This shouldn't be so hard... Steam and Xbox Live manage...

    Destiny: Rise of Iron 9.20.16

I just Chromecasted that on my TV and holy shit. Preordered back when they announced the game, but I'm definitely anticipating the beta now. Bring it on! I do think they should setup a bunch of PC servers as the market for it has to be there to make it worthwhile. That said, I really suck at...

To Boston Airport in the early AM

I have a flight out of Boston at 6:30am on a Saturday. The first silver line bus gets there at 5:50, which is too late, I think. Are there any other public transit lines that would get me to the airport on time, or do I have to pay for a taxi?

Hadn't heard about the show until now and did a 5-episode marathon. Lots of little things that are really annoying, but then there are some scenes that just make it worth watching on their own.

Genuinely awesome show that would have deserved more seasons. If only Netflix or Amazon could pick up the show... what's Monk up to these days? (The two of them working a case would make for an awesome movie, too.)

    Amazon Fire TV

Why should consumers care that Amazon subsidizes the box? If it isn't useful for what we'd use it for, then it's not a product worth buying. I can already stream Amazon and Netflix on my PS4. Are any of these boxes actually hardware constrained? My boxee runs everything just fine (including 3D...

    Investing

I wouldn't be so sure. For example, the Dow is price-weighted, whereas the S&P 500 is capitalization-weighted. I suspect there may be a (tiny?) difference in how well suited they are for index investment on that basis. On top of that, the Dow indexes only a small number of firms. Heck, there are...

    Health Care Thread

I don't disagree that there's a lot of waste in the system, but that's completely independent of the ACA. The problem there is that a service may have been unnecessary with hindsight, but could have been useful in "prevent[ing] problems that require expensive intervention." It's a bit like...

I can see it being a success from a pure marketing perspective... but from an investing perspective, it makes no sense to me. I might well think that renewable energies are going to take off, but even if that is true in the next 20 years, there's no saying that a "renewable energy motif" would...

Definitely join. Yes, they're silly... but all you need is some hiring manager to be part of the same group and suddenly you're "closer" than the other applicants. Is anyone using a smart watch (particular one that is compatible with the Nexus 5)? They sound pretty cool in theory, but at the same time, they don't seem to be quite there just yet. Huh? Econometrics is primarily linear regression models, whereas Machine Learning (at least how I'm learning it) is all about Bayesian statistics. I really don't see how those two fields are comparable... I guess they both deal with stats, but in very different ways. Why not just take a free...

Heh, I just got access to a cluster that is not being used on campus. 500 cores, average usage doesn't go above 1% for more than a few seconds. $5/month and there are no constraints on my usage. Sad thing? For operations that could be vectorized, some GPUs would probably outperform it. Then...

Is it, really? I just have a couple tabs open in Chrome (200-600MB per tab -- wtf, by the way?) and an open window of eclipse, powerpoint, R Studio, and texmaker. All of that uses 7GB of RAM with another 8GB on standby. That leaves 1GB free. I'm not saying that I'd have much lower performance...

Just finished episode 1... holy shit, what a season opener. I'm still in shock. Also, can I propose a norm where we write, before the spoiler tag, what episode is being spoiled? So that if a spoiler is tagged as episode 2, someone who has seen [up to] that episode should not have anything...

    Moving companies

That's what I did. I went with U-Box (Pods-equivalent from U-Haul, I guess?) and hired movers in both cities to load/unload it. I really didn't deal with the box myself at all and I spent about $600 compared to the $3,000+ that the national moving companies wanted to charge me. I also didn't...
