The Eating on a Budget Thread

So I have many friends who live in major city centres. Toronto, Chicago, Montreal, Los Angeles, blah blah blah. Every one of them who is interested in home garden has found a Unity Garden or similar at a church, mosque, or community centre. It's free in most cases, too. Now if everyone in the...

I have three knives that I use on the regular. 10 inch chef knife from Henckels, which is about 20 years old, has a wood grip, and is awesome. A Wusthof serrated knife for bread and such. And a cheap ass paring knife which I replace about every 7 or 8 months because I haven't found a good one in...

Brand name windows will always last longer. Pella is a good brand, and a decent company to work with. My house was built in 1977 with casement windows. I really like casement windows for the way they open, and the fact that they seem to seal better than sliders. They're also easy to remove and...

We have Allstate for everything, and they have been fantastic in all instances. Their prices seem quite competitive, too. Our policy is quite a bit higher, but we have acreage and several buildings. I'll stick with Allstate for all my insurance needs.

Marriage and the Power of Divorce

There is a lot of uncomfortable truth in this. We have a couple that are pretty close friends. They have kids, they're nearly fifty, and he's very obese. He gets sweaty going up a flight of stairs. He's just plain out of shape, and he's doing nothing about it. His father died at 55, his mother...

Okay, so the home gas range I have has one burner that's quite large for super fast heat. Boiling water? Takes no time. Today I am staying at a friends house. Made some boiled eggs. Was rustled by how long it took the water to boil. Their electric range is, without question, slower than my gas...

I understand the opposite is true. Electric ovens are far more consistent in their temperatures, and gas stove tops, even the residential grade, far out perform electric in speed and efficiency. I don't know about high heat cooking, what do you mean by that exactly?

And I'm remembering now that Menards will actually make a pretty quality window to custom size for under $300 (provided it's an average size, and not huge). You might want to check that out, too.

If it's not just a basic, cheap window figure out how to take the parts out, and get a company to make a new, sealed pane for that part of the window. That's cheap.

I have a friend who is a federal prosecutor. He's not getting paid. However, today he had court where he was taking a pretty big person in a drug ring out. He was not obligated to go, as he isn't being paid, but he went. The option was to dismiss the case for now, and hope to pick the guy up...

Yeah, winters are a thing, but it's hard to beat the midwest. If you look at Indiana, for example, house prices are unreasonably cheap. Just down the street from me a place is for sale - a bit ranch with a walk out basement. about 2,600 square feet, five bedrooms, three and a half bathrooms...
