Usually mind control. But Dark Knight Returns it was because Superman became a Government stooge and Batman was doing anti establishment Batman things. Then Raegan put out the order to get rid of em.
Erm... so are Marvel still putting out Captain America 3: Civil War just before this film to wreck it? They could have the same storyline...

They were originally scheduled to launch the same weekend, but DC wisely moved it up from July to March.

As far as the plot goes, I've been reading a book about scripts thatget stuck in development hell. One of the chapters talks about how WB tried to bounce back afterBatman & Robinflopped in '97. One of the ideas, before they settled on two different film series, was having Batman and Superman fight (with Ben Affleck rumored to play Batman, interestingly enough). The script outlined the plot as

After the death of Robin, Batman retires and ends up marrying a woman named Elizabeth. The Joker, thought dead, kills Bruce's wife with a poison dart. Batman basically becomes unhinged and blames Superman for her death because Superman had recently saved the Joker from being killed. Eventually, they learn Lex Luthor was behind the Joker's actions, hoping the plan would make Superman and Batman kill each other, so they team up to take Luthor down.

The reason I found this so interesting is the book is filled with examples of scripts that have fallen by the wayside only to have parts of them recycled years later. For instance, the Indy in a fridge scene fromIndiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skulloriginally appeared in a script leaked in 1998 and the twist at the end of Burton'sPlanet of the Apesremake first appears in a script in 1996 (though with a monkey Statue of Liberty, but same basic concept). Considering both Lex Luthor and Joker are to appear in this movie, it makes me wonder if parts of that script have been folded into this one.

Boy, Batman sure did think of everything! I'm curious though, what did he integrate into the suit to counteract Superman dropping an aircraft carrier on him? Or batting him into the sun with the Eiffel Tower?
Spit kryptonite gum into his eye. And for those of you saying, Batman said neither won, in the next panel, Batman is chilling in the Batcave with Alfred, while Superman is still at the bottom of the river.

Batman being apeshit paranoid about Superman doesn't even make sense from a character perspective, it's garbage writing through and through and examples like Lyrical keeps providing are just bad writers' attempts at reconciling a childish notion of contest between DC's two most iconic superheroes.

Batman hates criminals passionately, single-mindedly. He doesn't hate aliens who represent the absolute best of what humanity could hope to be. Where would that paranoia stem from?

basically "tower of babel", in the late 90's a story arc where batman's precautionary files against the justice league are stolen and used against them, and batman is voted out of the league in the end.

this is where they take his super preparedness to dummy levels and "cool for the story", and just create one-off stories regarding batmans super preparedness. (of course we can also say it stems from his utility belt of shark repellant batspray)

Yeah it definitely goes back further than that. It's just a warping of his character that I don't understand and seldom enjoy. He's the "World's Greatest Detective" not the "World's Greatest Mastermind".

A fair point. Like... what is his plans for killing a rogue Alfred, Dick, Barabra, or Gordon?

hell, now I want to write that story, just as a giant fuck you, to all the assholes that endorse this shitty grimderp Batman, with a contingency plan for everything.

Batman won't use guns.

Except against Darkseid lolol
The ASPECT of a gun. The godly repesenation of a gun. It takes ideas to kill the god of anti life. The idea of evil was slain by the representation of a gun. And then batman got shot into time and had to reload the end of time with the representation of the icons. The string of pearls from martha wayne becomes the idea of the multiverse.

Grant Morrison is insane and awesome at the same time.

But new 52 darkseid punches things to death....yay.
