Thanks to Big Phoenix Big Phoenix I just used B-Die Finder to find/verify some Bdie SKUs on Newegg etc. Honestly not sure you still need to bother with b-dies for a Ryzen 2700x, I did it just in case. Click the lowest timings you can afford for RAM set size you want.

Note: I'm no expert on overclocking but I Spoilered below what I gathered browsing around a lil before upgrading.
(1) On DDR4 overclocking.... Aim for DDR4 @ at least 3200MHz with CAS 14.

Ryzen performance benefits grealy and scales really well with RAM speed (see (4) Zen Cache & Memory below) This seems to be a common, easy to reach sweet spot for performance without much cost or hassle.

(2) DDR4 DIMM configs. One DIMM per channel:
Important for best chance @ compatibility & success overclocking RAM. Unless they do not make the size, get a singe DIMM per channel even if you have 4 DIMM slots. So on system with 2 channel memory you want:
  • 32 GB get 16GB DIMMs x 2. ( If you got 8 GB DIMMs x 4 (multiple dimms per channel) it *might* work but has a higher chance of complications/failure)
  • 16 GB get 8 GB DIMMs x 2 ( as opposed to 4 GB x 4).
(3) Memory SKU examples for Bdies
(4) Zen L3 & memory
Infinity Fabric runs @ 1/2 DDR4 ram speed (something AMD uses to fetch L3 data between cores on different L3 clusters/CCXs)
Increase RAM speed and all those L3 cache fetches run faster too. Big deal for Zen especially if your application is not optimized to be NUMA aware for Zen (like most games). Better L3 fetches means more FPS, as shit all fetches faster without fiddling or optimizing.

Hey Im trying to upgrade my old desktop so play some of the games that came out last few years like Arkham Knight and Rise of the Tomb Raider

Heres the current specs on CPU, memory and graphics card. My CPU and RAM seems to be sufficient but the games run pretty sluggishly even with resolution reduced and all effects turned off. I think all I need to update is the graphics card. Am I wrong here or do I need to add RAM and swap CPU out too?

If all I need is a new graphics card, what do you recommend thats a good value these days? Dont need some $24,000 HP Quadro GV100

ram/cpu is fine. I'd get evga nvidia 900 series, or 1000+ series if you want to show off.

Yeah, the video card is the main issue there. I would get a 10 series or wait a bit for an 11 then you can keep going for another year or two before rebuilding everything else.

ive been looking around and I see theres a lot of "branding" for same type of video card. So Im looking at a GTX 1050 and theres PNY, EVGA, MSI, etc. - wtf is that all about? I thought NVidia manufactured their own cards? also which of these "brands" are good and which to avoid? Sadris mentioned EVGA as a good one, what other brands are good? Or it all same shit basically?

This is as value as I could find.

ZOTAC GeForce GTX 1050 Ti DirectX 12 ZT-P10510A-10L 4GB 128-Bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 HDCP Ready Mini Video Card - Newegg.com

it's a mini card but it has the same number of cores and clock frequency as any other TI model.

nvidia makes a reference card and the third parties mod and overclock them, add fans ect, they're all different, evga is a good one, so is asus, msi, gigabyte

Personally I would go for 1060 myself. You will get more milage out if it. Or if you want value go AMD RX580. The AMD always had better "value" cards. My kids both have RX480s (lat gen) and have no issues playing anything 1080 at 50-60 fps. and its a bit cheaper than 1060 for about the same performance.

Radeon RX 580 vs. GeForce GTX 1060: 27 Game Battle

I personally splurged on a 1070 and could nto be happier. Cost me close to $400 but getting like 80-90 fps in Destiny 2 maxxed at 1080p.

Makes sense but i just want to play a bunch of older games that i missed out on in last 2-6 years and then probably get a new rig altogether. So im cool with just toasing $150 into this one to keep going for another year or 2.

I don't say this to many people, but buy a console, that's awful.
