Got wife's approval to get those parts. Looking forward to the upgraded parts, and now just have to figure out the best way to connect all my drives, etc. Given I'm not upgrading my drives, I think everything should boot up like it is now? Or is their gonna be registry problems with the switched hardware?

You're going to need to reinstall windows. Ideally you should have a small SSD with just windows and a few other programs on it, with everything else on a larger SSD and/or HDD. When you put everything together, install just the boot drive and install windows on to that. Once that is up and running, connect your other drives.

I'll take advantage of that then and upgrade to Windows 10 since I'll be getting the new board. Thanks!

My final build then when it's all said and done. Next upgrade down the line at some point is to upgrade my storage.

If you have the budget for it, I would at least get a small m.2 drive for your OS. A 250 GB Samsung 960 evo can be had for under $100. This will save you some pain down the road.

Looks like the newer 970 series is nearly identical in price, but increased performance?

I would go for it. Having a separate drive for your OS can save you a lot of headaches.
My 250gb SSD I have right now is my OS drive, and a few games that benefit from SSD. The rest of the games go on the WD Black 7200rpm drive, so I'm used to that concept. Will do the same if I end up with the 970 drive. I assume my new Mobo will have a m.2 slot?

I think you can get a better ryzen for 10-15 bucks more. He's going to hate life with 8gb of memory.

Tell him to start mowing lawns or something and save a bit to get a better vid card, more ram and an SSD.

You could also peruse places like Anantech/Hardforum and try to find some used deals to save even more money and possibly get better stuff.

You could also scope PCparts pickers to see what other people did with the same budget. This one seems to have way better goodies for the price.

I checked the specs on your mobo and it says it has a m.2 slot. I would use the 970 evo for just the OS and maybe a game or two, with the old SSD getting the rest of your games and the HDD being where you put docs, media and the few games that don't need a SSD.

So I stopped at the Boston Microcenter today on the way back from a weekend vacation in Maine. Holy shit is that place awesome!

Bought i7-8700k, Gigabyte Aorus Gaming Ultra Wifi motherboard, and a 250gb 970Evo M.2, loading stuff on it as I type.

For the moment I re-used my Hyper 212+ cooler, but I'm gonna be ordering the rockitcool delid kit and probably a Scythe Mugen 5 cooler this week.

$652 for that. What's his actual budget? There is for sure some changes I'd make in there, and used parts would be one of them. Hardware swap reddit is a fantastic place that I've used before.

If youre gonna buy a Ryzen G, either get the 2400 or spend even a little bit more and get a 1600 or 2600 and a discrete card. A 2200g and nvidia 1030 is kind of a waste.

Here is what he can expect with the APU alone. I would suggest dropping the 1030, and investing in a 2400g and the fastest ram that motherboard can support. My 2400g runs my steam library at 720p medium settings perfectly fine.
