I'm not a pre-built kind of user. The Asus 5800X and 3600 are about $250 each to buy standalone, so it seems like a good deal until you realize that only leaves $250 for everything else. The case is dated and looks to have little ventilation. The power supply is probably low quality. The listed specs for the RAM is 2666 (3200 or 3600 with decent timings is much better for Ryzen).
The MSI build looks to have a better case and RAM but worse CPU. GPU is AMD (vs Nvidia on the Asus) if that matters - the 6600 should be a bit faster than the 3060 but the feature set is a bit worse. Power supply is arguably just as cheap.
I've bought from Newegg for 20+years without issue, but they've taken some (deserved) knocks lately for some shady things around forced bundling (during covid) and issues on returns. The return thing I think has a bit more gray area than people want to admit, because I think return scams by buyers is a huge problem for retailers these days which leads to retailers being overly cautious. FWIW, I have always received a new, correct item from Newegg and had no issue sending one mobo back (new, unopened, didn't need it).

So, windows 7 being EOL/EOS is starting to slowly leech away from my older computer's long term usefulness. That said, I realize I no longer need 2 ultra heavy gaming rigs since I don't even really need 1 given that FFXIV is the highest end game I play anymore. I have been looking at the mini form factor PCs lately, but am waffling a bit. This is probably something I will postpone for a year or two, but anyone know what mini pcs are king of the hill? The minisforum um690 is what I am leaning towards currently. That or what ever their "newest" model will be in 2024.
This is kind of YMMV, but for those that live near a microcenter they have a combo deal with the AMD Ryzen 7 7700x and 32 GB g.skill Flare DDR5 6000 dual channel ram for $348. You can then add another 32GB ram kit on for $0.01 . I believe this only works if you reserve online for in store pickup. I was skeptical they would let it through, and the cashier questioned it and asked his manager after saying there is no way that could be correct, but the manager said "if the computer lets it through, just run it."

Told her I'd give her old case and I have 16GB 3200 DD4 I can pitch in. Any thoughts? I'm thinking of revamping my battle station slightly. I use this for both work and fun. What I think I want is a 34 ultrawide OLED when it comes out this year with 2x vertical monitor "leaves" on the left and right side.
This is to replace my 144hz and my 4k monitors when getting one that could do both was too expensive for my tastes.
So like 24 inch 144hz x2 tilted vertically and in the middle the ultrawide 144hz 4k monitor.

750w PSU is massive overkill for a build like this unless you want to give the kid the option to upgrade to a (high-end) discrete card down the line. I was running a RX 5700 on a 550W supply until recently.
Smart BM2 is kind of an eh PSU in roughly the same tier/price point as the Corsair CX. Would probably be OK for an iGPU build, but for about $10-20 more, you could get something like the Rosewill Photon (built on Super Flower's platform) or NZXT C series. Were it me, I'd spend even more - I always splurge on PSUs because a good one can last 2 or 3 builds.

For me the PPI is enough, and it's more about video power to actually drive the pixels and still be able to have another monitor or two if I want

Decided to take the plunge. UM690 Ryzen 9 6900hx with a Radeon 680M graphics card. Basically they use laptop parts for these, which is fine. Waiting for it to be shipped out. Will report if it sucks or not.
