Game studios stopped doing this when a guy named IceFrog used those tools to make a UMS that was more popular than the game it spawned from. And then that studio got greedy and tried to sue for IP rights... and lost. And then that UMS became a huge success on its own and spawned the most successful game genre in existence
Very true. The only people to blame there were Blizzard for not jumping on it and offering Icefrog and Guinsoo a fat sack of cash and a VP position at the company.

On the flip side Valve bought up Counterstrike and its now the most popular FPS in the world.

I tried playing after the work. The client is really bad right now. I was playing on medium, and I was just getting random sub 40 fps, and stuttering. I'm sure they'll get that worked out. Well they have to or this game will die in a fire even more quickly and can't far the whales on it.

I was happy with the gameplay though. Typical ARPG. I just don't get how people are saying POE is gameplay is superior. ARPG gameplay is mostly all the same. Unless you want to count POE's amazing TRADE SYSTEM..../s It always puzzles much at how much POE gets a free pass on such an aneurysm of a system.

D4's open world system to me is up in the air. The little I played tonight screamed world quest, and it was pretty easy to farm them for drops. I kinda want a reason to group up and kill some shit(do a run not just farm the open quest). The open world quest thing kind of defeats that.
Gameplay, like the actual combat? I don't think anyone says that PoE is better beyond what might be considered subjective. You can blowup whole screens at a time and move around almost too fast, and if that's what you want, PoE will let you do it.

PoE really shines when you understand the multitude of systems and can utilize that for some truly creative interactions. I'm no build genius, I'm at the point where I find something interesting that someone else is doing, and then tinker around with it in PoB for a few hours, try to find some small little way to do it better. Or cheaper, lots of profiles on poe.ninja are quite expensive. The third party tools really help with this. PoE is a dead game without PoB.

BTW, absolutely nobody gives a pass to the trade system. There's varying degrees of acceptance, but nobody likes it.

PoE isn't nearly as build diverse as people give it credit for. Auras are entirely too powerful and most builds become some variation of "okay, how do I break the game with this skill gem while getting all the reservation cost reduction I need to fit these idiotic auras in?"

And while there are a shitload of skill gems most of them are minor variances of the same thing or... have shit scaling.

Armour stackers don't even favor Armour nodes. They go for aura increases and scale grace and evasion over Armour with iron will because it scales better. PoE is a stupid game that mostly doesn't make sense because GGG has a hard on for tricking people with bad tooltips that defy linguistics. Words literally don't mean anything in PoE.

PoE is successful because they got the basics right. Like the fact it is still the only game that doesn't have tiers of crafting recipes and currency. You can use all the same recipes and crafts at level 1 as you can at level 100, on any item in the game, provided you have them. And you can get lucky, even while leveling, to get most of the currency (discounting exotic currency and the myriad of other, needlessly complex systems they've added over the years).

End game doesn't give you higher tier versions of Augs/Alts/Chaos/Regals/Exalts/Divines... it just lets you get more of them so using those things during the leveling process never feels like a waste of time. Like picking up chipped gems does, for instance.

I think you're being a bit too reductive. I've played the shit out of mines, but I'd consider Pyroclast mines a different build from Hexblast mines. They play very similarly, but the puzzle around how to build the character is different enough to be fun.

"How do I break the game?" is exactly the fun part. Maybe auras will get tuned down. I don't think that will change the fundamental process of building a character. You might reserve some buffs instead of auras.

The last build they posted for build of the week is a good example. It's clunky as fuck and I will never play it. But I'm glad it exists and there is still ingenuity to be found in an oldish game.

How do I break the game is always the fun part. But there is not as much build diversity as people give PoE credit for.

Allowing clearly broken mechanics to exist and persist is also a boon for PoE though. That's also fun

Ah ok, I don't have any issues yet with lots of clicking so that's nice to hear.

99.9% of the uniques in PoE are worthless vendor trash and always have been, especially ones you find early...
Sure. Many are OK for levelling, but at least they have some kind of name and usually a theme. Helps with world building at the very least.

Not "randomly generated of stats I don't need".

More like 20 years. Fucking Redridge.
20 years? Fucking Wing Commander had shitty escort quests everyone hated. 1990, IIRC? They have been with us forever because they're hard and they suck and Devs know it and they hate you.

POE has plenty of build diversity but people only watch/care about the "meta". They just want to know what's cheapest/fastest/highest dps. There are dozens of skills that can do all content, but you only ever see ~6 or 7 because they're just way easier to build for. The common PoE player is going to think there's no diversity because they can't work outside 'the box'.

Probably doesn't help that the game design at the core is kill and fast. Very little design in survive, control, avoid, assist or any other function other then kill and fast .

But I do think build diversity in that game trumps all. It's just that 90% of builds are all trying to accomplish the same thing. Kill, and fast.

The Asmongold stream of this was unintentional comedy gold - spends 20 minutes getting his hair right, then a minute playing before it lags out, crashes, deletes his character and then locks his account when he tries to create a new one ;p

My unreflected thoughts

I played Barbarian, so some topics might not be valid for a range class. Played through the whole content, visited all the available "dungeons".

So, it feels and plays almost like D3 and D2 had a baby, but some design choices really bugged me and I like POE, Last Epoch, even Wolcen so ARPGs in general a lot:

"Need to clear all enemies so this door opens" mechanics
the amount of perma CC cast chaining mobs, fearing mobs is sometimes nerve wrecking
sometimes unclear if you face an enemy or an unhittable summon from a foe
lots of annoying to fight foes like fleeing mobs, tons of range mobs, teleporting mobs, backpaddling mobs
lots of bland running around in dungeons and out door zones where literally nothing happens and nothing interesting is around
Not a huge fan of DDR bossfights with one shot mechanics. Sometimes you have to take a hit when your movement is on cooldown (might change with different equip later)
everything looked grey and red, especially in dungeons. Yes I know it's the new "theme". So the new is bland
level scale/everything leveling up with you makes you feel almost no power surge from new items. Lvl 1-5 when you step from blue to yellow and the occasional unique it's okay, later when you replace yellow with a slightly better yellow it feels just "meh". Might also change endgame with build defining uniques
The outdoor events with other player do not really have the intended mmo feeling. Just weird. Might be me
Some GUI elements like the textboxes or the icons look amateurish and not in line with the rest of the graphics. Also some environments look amazing, others really crappy
I don't want to collect ore and herbs in an ARPG
All in all game feels way more console like or maybe "Diablo immortal" like than D2 or D3

All in all I really, really didn't feel it for a brand new game we waited 8 years for. It's "okay" so far, 6/10ish. Don't think leagues, battle pass or whatever will change that. And that coming from someone who just played Season 28 in D3 and really enjoyed it for the 28th time.

Watching a few more stream VODs this morning, looks like ranged/melee balance doesn't exist at all. If you're melee you'll get shit all over.
Also, running around is"content", get your latest npc download and fork out $$$ ;p.

if this game was done by some no-name indie company, it would be labeled as poor attempt to make a diablo game and it would die once players reach end-game and realize that there's nothing really to do, other than grind for weeks on end and maybe get 0.7% dps increase. But the name alone will keep it going for a few years at least. I seriously doubt that seasons will save it. Because blizzard does not make sweeping changes to their games. But the initial sales numbers will be insane. 10m sold in first month would not be a surprise

Game looks super solid based on a little bit of watching streamers. That said, it's the first act. It's super easy to have a polished and well done first act. We won't know what the game is really like until it's released and people can get to end game.

Sorry, no offense but this is just a skill issue. I've been primarily playing melee rogue and while a couple of the skills don't seem amazing there are a few that are definitely OP af, particularly twisting blades. In fact the way I'm clearing everything makes me think that melee is the most OP way to go IF you know what you're doing. I can clear screens of mobs nearly instantly and have extremely good single target damage. As for barbs, Alkaizer was stomping everything pretty easily. He however, is a pro so it's to be expected and while melee is definitely harder for the average user to be good with it's definitely not even close to being bad.

On a side note, while ya I don't really care for the scaling levels it's both a good and bad thing. Helps level and gear faster but also makes it hard to feel your power truly increasing like would be typical in most ARPG's. Would be better if it soft scaled with like a +5 or +10 cap to any given zone so a typical level 5 zone only scales up to 10 etc.

At least the escort quests in Wing Comnander made sense. Those Kilrathi were Jack wagons to the transport ships.

The only reason I'd buy this is to make character names to offend the CCP and see how fast I'd get banned.

Maybe, just maybe when it goes F2P.
