There wouldn't be a need to defend vulgarity and hatred if people weren't trying to infringe on the freedom of vulgar and hateful people to express themselves.

compelling only to people scared of opposing ideas. the whole point of free speech is about protecting the people on the edge. the only exception we should have is shit like screaming fire and causing immediate panic and harm. we also have civil cases over slander, and more SJWs should be taken to task there, but defamed regular joes don't have the resources to fight them.

I think society is marked by dramatic pendulum swings, Mist. And when we have people equating vulgar language with rape and terrorism? A pendulum swing is coming. The thing is, you believe it is coming because we're choosing to defend the indefensible; but I see it as coming because of the dramatic ideological creep of modern day "immortality". Your statement, I think is a pretty poignant example of why it has to come...When words can be diluted to such a point that men joking about dongles, or asking someone to coffee or in this case a few vulgar remarks by young idiots--can be construed as "problematic" and aspects of "rape culture"? Then we are through the looking glass.

People probably need to experience another bout of what censorship looks like--this generation needs its McCarthy so the next two can have their modern The Crucible written and learn a lesson that has been taught again and again throughout history. It's okay though, while the pendulum swings back from moral hysteria every now and then; it always progresses farther after.

And as someone else mentioned--who decides what is civil? That's the issue. Everyone's opinion is different. Isn't it just far easier to let each person decide to ignore or embrace X language, than it is to try some top down control? We live in a Republic for a reason; that means you have both the privilege of not having to be ruled by the majority and the responsibility to ignore people who offend you. When people grow up and realize this? We'll all be better off. And as said, maybe what we need every few generations is a reminder of how bad things can get when we surrender to hysterics. (Free speech is like vaccinations, it's a victim of its own success really--until you really study times where it was taken away? You'll have no idea how terrible it is. And frankly, most people are idiots, so they don't know; they need modern reminders.)

it was done off campus. what control do they have over student activities off campus? The fraternity is going after them though, as they have to jump on it to avoid a backlash at their other chapters.
